What is with the networking and sharing center? I have wireless incomming into my pc and sharing out to LAN. I set the Wireless to private and the LAN to private and the LAN is showing as undentified network and it wont stay Private after a reboot, it keeps changing to public and its preventing remote access across the wireless for some reason.

On all the machines Network discovery, File sharing and Public folder sharing are turned on (Printer sharing, password protected sharing and media sharing are turned off). Each machine can see the other two machines in Explorer>Network.
On one of the machines, I have shared a couple of folders in the C drive and added Everyone in Choose people to share with, giving Co-owner permission level. This works fine and I can see these folders and all the files they contain on the other machines. However, if I share files and/or a folder & files in the Documents folder with similar permission level these do not show on the other machines.......
I use a XP Home SP2 desktop as my primary computer and I have recently bought a Vista Home Premium x32 laptop. I use a Netgear 802.11g router. My main desktop connects to the router through a hard ethernet line and the laptop connects wirelessly. I want to enable file sharing between the two computers. What do I do? ps. One big problem here is that even though I've installed the LLTD hotfix for my XP computer, it does not show up in the Network folder/control panel while I CAN see it in the Networking and Sharing Center's full network map.

I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines
When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."
I currently have 6 PCs networking with Windows XP in my office. However, one PC is needed to replace. If the new PC bought is with Windows Vista Home Edition, it is possible to be networking to the existing PCs with Windows XP?

I have bitten the bullet and bought a laptop loaded with Vista Home Premium, 64 bit. I also have a laptop running XP Home, 32 bit. I installed the LLTD Responder protocol on the XP box. I have a domain name of HOME for both computers. Still can't see the either computer on the network.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEverything was (mostly) OK until - I think - the most recent set of MS updates (?last week - all installed OK) on this Vista HP laptop (on all the time, rebooted maybe 1 a week... and not for a couple of days at least...) There have been oddities but last night on returning home from a public wifi location I couldn't connect to the internet... of course nothing had changed on the home network (1Gb LAN - Private -to Thecus N5200 LAN port...(DHCP on) WAN port connected to Netgear Wireless router; laptop wifi - Public - connected to Netgear (DHCP on))
After much fiddling with settings, most of which seem to put everything back as it was (except perh. NAT now OFF on the Netgear - thought the only reason it was ON was because of the only "mostly OK" referred to above as that resolved a previous problem...) everything is OK and I had internet with *both* networks connected...
a) Vista (still) seems unable to recognise that a change of Network (different SSID etc. etc. etc.) should probably require new settings....but it doesn't and connection remains stubbornly Local with the old (home) IP address, gateway, etc.
b) "Diagnose" doesn't achieve anything useful
c) ipconfig /renew faills because Vista can't find the DHCP server... (is there a friendlier UI method of telling Vista *just* to get new IP settings without all the tedious and unhelpful "diagnosis"?)
c) ipconfig /all shows adapter STILL has the home IP address... disabling and re-enabling, disconnecting/reconnecting, random *&^%ing around eventualy brings it back to life and eventually a new IP address (and correct gateway and DNS) obtained.....
I just wondering if and how I can hook up two pc's together.(beside's networking) I mean so thay work as one. Why? Becouse I built another pc from all bits & pieces I had lying around and was wondering what to with it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThere are a lot of threads about on various sites about the problems of introducing a Vista PC into a network of XP desktops, but none of them answer my problem. Here it is: I have a network of two XP desktops and one laptop. My old laptop also used XP but this has since been replaced by a new Vista laptop. When I first introduced the laptop all was well and i could access any file on any PC from any other - I don't use passwords. Only one desktop has printers and each of the other PC print remotely via this desktop.
A few weeks ago something changed and now the Vista laptop cannot access any of the files on the two XP desktops. The laptop can see the two desktops and can also see the shared folders on those desktops. However it is not now possible to open the folders or access the files.
Both of the XP desktops can see the Vista laptop and can open folders and access the files on the Vista laptop without problem. The Vista laptop can also print via the XP desktop without any problem. It can therefore access the print spools on that PC. It just can't open the folders to get at the files.
What happened in this case is I installed the printer just like any other network printer, but it doesn't print. I see the job in the queue, it spools, prints and then the queue is blank but nothing comes out of the printer. And there are no errors. I have verified from the XP machine the printer does work. I found another article in Microsoft's TechNet Forums.
It says to add a NEW local printer and use UNC naming to add the printer to the intranet. I have done this before at work with no problem. Vista is suppose to have these drivers built in, but when we tell it to add the printer after filling out the path to the printer \computernameprinter (using the shared name) it asks for the location of the driver. I do not know where to look for this and when I go to HP's www site I can not download the driver as it says it's built into the Vista operating system and doesn't offer it for download.
Where would I point the wizard to for the driver? I looked in the windowssystem32driversen_US folder, but couldn't tell if I was in the right place. I guess I could just keep putting folders in until I found the right one
I have a Desktop running XP - SP3 wired to a Linksys wireless router. My Vista laptop is wireless. I can connect to the Internet fine from either machine. I can see and access the laptop from the desktop but I can't see the desktop XP machine from the Vista laptop. I went through this same thing with my network up north but now that we've moved back to Florida I've got the same problem. McAfee network management shows both machines on the network but I can't access shared files and printers from the laptop.I know there are some settings I need to make to the Vista laptop but I can't remember what I did to get it working up north.

This is a new Acer Aspire notebook and out of the box it found my home wireless network and I entered the security key and all was good---to a point. It would drop the connection to the internet but keep connected to the LAN. I red here that antivirus program's firewall must be set to the right setting --- I did that. My question is what do I need to do to keep this system from dropping its internet connection?

BUT, I still cannot get the network to work.On the Vista machine I can see the XP machine but clicking on it gets the message that it is inaccessible. We recently purchased a HP Laptop running Vista x64, it is connected to the same 2Wire through the wireless signal.
Here is our problem. We purchased a HP Photosmart C5580 which is connected to our desktop and functioning fine.
We were told we could connect our laptop to this printer wirelessly all though it has no wireless capability (other than bluetooth which we do not have on our laptop). They said there were two ways to network it so that we would not have to use the USB with our laptop.
What is the easiest way to do about doing this?
I have spent 6 hours on the phone with HPs so called "techs" and they were unable to help at all. Kept trying to connect through bluetooth (which I told them our laptop was not capable of). I called Geek Squad to make sure are laptop was some how to connect to this printer with out a USB as that is the only reason I bought it. They said we could do it 2 ways through networking and that it would be simple enough for me to do on my own.
Is anyone able to help??

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently added an additional computer to my home network and have installed Windows 7 on it so that my network now consists of computers running either XP, Vista or Windows 7. My problem is that although the Vista box appears in the Network entries on both the XP and Windows 7 boxes I can't browse the Vista box. The error message "Windows cannot access \ComputerName" and then indicates that I don't have permission to access the Vista computer. However I'm able to map a network drive on the XP box & the Windows 7 box to any of the shares on the Vista box. The XP boxes can browse the Windows 7 box and vice-versa. The Vista box can browse both the XP box and the Windows 7 box. I've searched for a solution on the web and tried almost all the ones that I've found but can't solve this
View 6 Replies View Related-set up wireless network: can see all of the shared folders on the XP machine from the Vista laptop, but can only see the Public folder on the Vista laptop from the XP machine. Several other folders, set up for sharing on the Vista laptop, can't be seen on the XP machine ("not accessible- you may not have permission to use this network resource").

- Firewall is not part of the problem: Windows firewall is turned off on both machines, and problem persists when Kaspersky Internet Security's firewall is disabled

I have two Vista computers running on a home network behind a Linksys router. The problem is that when printing it takes a long time for MS word to print. Computer 1 is a desktop running vista home and computer 2 is a laptop running vista home. The printer is connected to the laptop. I can print from both machines, but it takes a long time to print. I'm not fussed about the old system having internet access or anything too demanding other than being able to exchange files with the new system. I'm a complete novice to this sort of set up but am usually literate enough to bumble my way through to a solution on most things but one aspect has me slightly confused. From what I can gather the most efficient solution is to use a Ethernet crossover cable to connect the two machines but my new machine has only one Ethernet socket currently occupied by the connection to my router. Am I missing something obvious here or do I need to get hold of a hub or similar?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a reasonably experienced Windows networking user (I have been networking Windows PCs together since Win 3.1) and also a network engineer. Vista has thrown an interesting issue up. I have a Juniper SSG 20 router with an ADSL, wifi and Lan interface on it. The way the Juniper works is it forces the wifi connection to be on a different subnet than the wired network. So, I have a wired network of 192.168.1.X and 192.168.2.X for wifi.
If my PCs are on the same subnet (both on wired or both on wifi), no problems. I can share and make network shares available. If my PCs are on the different networks they cannot see each other and network shares fail. I can ping between the PCs when they are on different subnets, so net connectivity is there. I believe that the Juniper is set up correctly (I have set up a bi-directional trust - any any between the two networks). Has Vista introduced a new level of security preventing browsing between subnets?
We have recently installed another computer in the house. I can detect it in 'Network'. If I click on the this new computer icon and login, what features and facilities will be available to me when working on the original computer.

Both computers will print just fine but after I turn the printer on after being down, the Vista machine lists the the printer as offline and I can't get it to 'refresh' to see that the printer is on. Documents just sit in the queue. Nothing seems to work short of uninstall/install.

I have a home network with 3 XP computers and a Vista laptop (Lenovo x60) running Vista Business. The network using both wired and wireless connections. I installed a NAS (Maxtor Shared Storage 2), and had to change the workgroup name (since the Maxtor could not handle the "@") character.
After I changed the workgroup name on all computer, the vista cannot find my shared printer, neither any of the other computers on my network. The XP machines do not see the vista either. I am having an issue with seeing the computers I have networked together. All together there are five computers. All of them show in the network map on all of the computers. I have disabled the password, enabled the network locating (file sharing, etc...), and checked the TCP settings. The following are what I have found: 1) The 3 computers that talk see all 5 computers, but when you try to get into one of the two that don't talk it tells you that the network path is invalid. 2) If I try to ping the two computers that won't talk from any of the 3 computers that are talking my request is timed out. 3) If I go to view computers and devices on the two that don't talk only the three that are talking show up. If I go to view computers and devices on the three that are talking all 5 are there. However, If i try to open either of the two computers that aren't talking it tells me the network path is invalid. I need to get these two computers to comunicate with each other and with the three other computers.
