On Networking Printing Get Slow

May 21, 2009

I have two Vista computers running on a home network behind a Linksys router. The problem is that when printing it takes a long time for MS word to print. Computer 1 is a desktop running vista home and computer 2 is a laptop running vista home. The printer is connected to the laptop. I can print from both machines, but it takes a long time to print. Also the laptop is running slow. It takes along time to boot up.

Access The Internet But Very Slow Networking

Aug 9, 2006

I'm running build 5384 on a Dell Precision 370 and a Precision 380. I've tried 64 and 32bit versions but I keep having the following problem: Basically I can access the internet but very, very slowly. Most pages just time out. The machines both have Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit NIC's connected to Dell Powerconnect Gigabit switches. I've tried Manual IP config and DHCP but I can't get a reasonable speed through via ethernet! There's nothing wrong with the network, I've got hundreds of XP 32bit and x64 clients connected to the same network and they can all access the Internet fine. I can ping other clients on the netowork from the Vista machines and I get

Slow Printing On Network And Local Printer In

Jul 2, 2008

I originally posted this 6-24 on only the Vista Printer_fax_scan NG with no response. Multiposted now to broaden the range of people seeing the post. Really need assistance. TIA.

I have a laptop (new HP) with Vista Home Premium SP1 preinstalled, 3 GB RAM,250GB HDD, AMD Turion 64 processor. Using Zone Alarm free as firewall and AVG 8 free as antivirus. Know that firewall is not issue since have full access to printers (can ping the network connected printers) and all other networked computers without problem. I understand that AVG has had a printing issue in the past but I totally turned off AVG by uninstalling itand this did not clear the issue with printing.

Out of the box I have connected the new laptop to the following printers using the latest drivers available from the manufacturers or using Vista's built in if the drivers aren't available from manufacturer's web site.

The following are connected through the home network via wireless and work flawlessly with 3 laptops running XP Pro (2) and XP Home (1).HP 2200DN - B & W Laser (network with Cat5e cable through WAP/Switch) OKIDATA 5150 - Color laser (network with Cat5e cable through WAP/Switch)Epson 1280 (connected through a Sony XP computer share) Epson R260 (also connected through the Sony XP computer)

The last printer is a Canon BJC80 which is connected via a USB to Parallel printer cable (Belkin) which works great with no delay on any of the laptops running XP.

Networking

Sep 22, 2009

This is kind of off-topic and I apologize. I'm having difficulties and
some questions regarding networking (Yes, there *is* a Vista machine
involved ), but I figure that a network-specific forum might be
better suited to my questions. Problem is that I cannot find a
suitable place to ask. All the places I used to use seems moribund or
gone.

HP Web Printing With IE8

Apr 30, 2009

HP is the new web printing ad-on for IE8? It says that it is but when you go to download it, it states that the system is only for IE6 and IE7? When I called HP to ask about the new version, they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about, surprise, surprise...They told me that it is not HP but Microsoft that will publish this ad-on? I didn't understand that, they told me to call them.

Networking Not Working

Mar 23, 2008

Everything was (mostly) OK until - I think - the most recent set of MS updates (?last week - all installed OK) on this Vista HP laptop (on all the time, rebooted maybe 1 a week... and not for a couple of days at least...) There have been oddities but last night on returning home from a public wifi location I couldn't connect to the internet... of course nothing had changed on the home network (1Gb LAN - Private -to Thecus N5200 LAN port...(DHCP on) WAN port connected to Netgear Wireless router; laptop wifi - Public - connected to Netgear (DHCP on))

After much fiddling with settings, most of which seem to put everything back as it was (except perh. NAT now OFF on the Netgear - thought the only reason it was ON was because of the only "mostly OK" referred to above as that resolved a previous problem...) everything is OK and I had internet with *both* networks connected...

a) Vista (still) seems unable to recognise that a change of Network (different SSID etc. etc. etc.) should probably require new settings....but it doesn't and connection remains stubbornly Local with the old (home) IP address, gateway, etc.

b) "Diagnose" doesn't achieve anything useful
c) ipconfig /renew faills because Vista can't find the DHCP server... (is there a friendlier UI method of telling Vista *just* to get new IP settings without all the tedious and unhelpful "diagnosis"?)

c) ipconfig /all shows adapter STILL has the home IP address... disabling and re-enabling, disconnecting/reconnecting, random *&^%ing around eventualy brings it back to life and eventually a new IP address (and correct gateway and DNS) obtained.....

Networking Cannot Access

Mar 23, 2008

There are a lot of threads about on various sites about the problems of introducing a Vista PC into a network of XP desktops, but none of them answer my problem. Here it is: I have a network of two XP desktops and one laptop. My old laptop also used XP but this has since been replaced by a new Vista laptop. When I first introduced the laptop all was well and i could access any file on any PC from any other - I don't use passwords. Only one desktop has printers and each of the other PC print remotely via this desktop.

A few weeks ago something changed and now the Vista laptop cannot access any of the files on the two XP desktops. The laptop can see the two desktops and can also see the shared folders on those desktops. However it is not now possible to open the folders or access the files.

Both of the XP desktops can see the Vista laptop and can open folders and access the files on the Vista laptop without problem. The Vista laptop can also print via the XP desktop without any problem. It can therefore access the print spools on that PC. It just can't open the folders to get at the files.

Networking To XP To Print

Mar 23, 2008

What happened in this case is I installed the printer just like any other network printer, but it doesn't print. I see the job in the queue, it spools, prints and then the queue is blank but nothing comes out of the printer. And there are no errors. I have verified from the XP machine the printer does work. I found another article in Microsoft's TechNet Forums.

It says to add a NEW local printer and use UNC naming to add the printer to the intranet. I have done this before at work with no problem. Vista is suppose to have these drivers built in, but when we tell it to add the printer after filling out the path to the printer \computernameprinter (using the shared name) it asks for the location of the driver. I do not know where to look for this and when I go to HP's www site I can not download the driver as it says it's built into the Vista operating system and doesn't offer it for download.

Where would I point the wizard to for the driver? I looked in the windowssystem32driversen_US folder, but couldn't tell if I was in the right place. I guess I could just keep putting folders in until I found the right one

XP - Networking Can Not Connect

Oct 29, 2009

I have a Desktop running XP - SP3 wired to a Linksys wireless router. My Vista laptop is wireless. I can connect to the Internet fine from either machine. I can see and access the laptop from the desktop but I can't see the desktop XP machine from the Vista laptop. I went through this same thing with my network up north but now that we've moved back to Florida I've got the same problem. McAfee network management shows both machines on the network but I can't access shared files and printers from the laptop.I know there are some settings I need to make to the Vista laptop but I can't remember what I did to get it working up north.

Very new to Vista Home Basic - old XP Home user. This is a new Acer Aspire notebook and out of the box it found my home wireless network and I entered the security key and all was good---to a point. It would drop the connection to the internet but keep connected to the LAN. I red here that antivirus program's firewall must be set to the right setting --- I did that. My question is what do I need to do to keep this system from dropping its internet connection?

Networking Inaccessible

May 4, 2009

I tried installing the LLTD onto my XP machine but got the message that it was not going to load because the file on my machine was up to date and therefore not nescessary. BUT, I still cannot get the network to work.On the Vista machine I can see the XP machine but clicking on it gets the message that it is inaccessible. The computer name is correct. On the XP machine I see nothing except the local area connection icon. Both machines are in the same workgroup. Some of the network must be working OK because the XP machine and Vista machine both access the internet using the network to get to the Netgear router. Setting up networking on the XP asks you to make a n/w disk for the other machines but - It only allows your to use the Adisk (floppy.

Not Printing Correctly

Jul 29, 2009

how to resolve or further debug. I've got a Thinkpad Laptop running Vista x64 Ultimate. I reinstalled the OS ~3 weeks ago and installed my print drivers. I have 2 network printers and I also use doPDF to create PDFs. All of these were working
just fine.

Today they are not printing correctly, but not in a way I can figure out. Applications give me an error saying there is an unknown error or that there is no default printer installed. This happens in Firefox, OpenOffice, Acrobat, Thunderbird and others.

The weird thing is that if I goto control panel and try to print a test page with any of the printers it works fine. In addition, I can print txt files from both Notepad & Wordpad, but still not from Openoffice. So why is it I can print simple txt files & test pages but not from the apps I need to print from. BTW this happens for all the printers I have installed including the 2 network printers, the local PDf printer (doPDF), & the XPS printer. These all worked last time I printed (a few days ago), but not today. What can I do to ideally fix this or at least better debg this?

Panasonic Printing

Apr 4, 2008

My KX-P1123 does not print in response to the "Print" command from Vista Home Basic. It worked well when connected to Win98. I don't think theprinter is at fault because it does print in response to inputs from itsControl Table.

I am using the correct printer cable ."USB to Centronix 36parallel printer. Vista's Control Panel/Printers shows the KX-P1123 is installed. The Panasonic website tells me that the printer's driver (*1INBOX) is installed and no other drivers are needed.

Following the instructions that came with the cable, I made the KX-P1123 the default printer, right-clicked it and selected "Properties". Then clicked "Ports" and selected "USB001:Virtual PrinterPort for USB". Clicking "Print Test Page" changes printer status from "Ready" to "Error".

If I connect my Epson inkjet to the PC, it works well, so the PC does not seem to be the problem.I evidently did something wrong, or left something undone.

Printing: One User Can, Other Can

Jul 29, 2009

The shared printer is connected to LPT of a Vista computer. We used to have an XP computer that could print to this printer. We changed the XP comp for a Vista notebook. This notebook has the same user/password as the Vista machine where the printer is connected to. Hence, this user can print from the notebook.

Now the strange part: another user on this notebook can't. It is sent to the printer spooler, sits there for a few minutes ('printing...') and then there's an error message (just 'cannot print' or something like that). We set this account to administrator type, during install we put in and stored the account name and password of the account that can print (so the one that is the same on both computers) but to no avail. We followed this instruction from an earlier post [1]:.......

Printing Error

Nov 24, 2008

I couldn't see a forum based purely on printing, so please redirect me if this is not the place to be. I've been searching for an answer to this for a while, but haven't been getting very far. Scenario: Vista 32bit Home Premium SP1 PC, with a Konica Minolta 2500w Magicolor printer via USB. All printing works fine from the desktop. XP Laptop with SP3, all sitting together happily in a wireless network (workgroup called workgroup). File and printer sharing is turned on, and I can exchange files between laptop and desktop with no issues.

I can see and install the printer on the laptop, and I can print a test page (I had to turn bidirectional off to achieve this, or at least achieve this without restarting the print spooler every time). When I try to print from an application such as Word, I get an error to say that there was an error printing to the printer, check printer is installed properly, etc. If I try to print from notepad I get an error the handle is invalid. If I try to print from Wordpad, no errors, but no print job is created either. I can continue to print test pages from the laptop even after receiving this error. Within the Network and Sharing Centre, I can see the printer listed underneath my Vista desktop machine. If I connect the printer directly to the laptop via the USB cable, the laptop can print from any application I choose.
