View 5 RepliesThe Microsoft Security Essentials proved itself. My notebook started to run weird, lately. I was suspicious and start scan the whole system with McAfee, however it stopped on 11% of scan and showed me the error. I started it once more, but it was disabled again.
I have been using the Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows 7 and because I was thinking about switching to this AV on the Vista at the end of this year, I got rid of the McAfee Total Security and installed the Microsoft, just to give it a try on Vista. Yes, it found and destroyed the trojan in the System32. Today, it blocked the another one during browsing the web.
The Microsoft Security Essentials beta is now available for download for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. The build number is 1.0.1407.00.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am concerned that Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] is not performing as it should, because it doesn't appear to be activating and running a scan as scheduled under Settings.
If I open MSE and choose to click on the Scan Now button to carry out a Manual Scan on demand, then three events are clearly visible in 'real time' -
There is activity on the progress bar of the window that opens, and files being scanned are clearly seen. The MSE Icon in the Notification Tray shows rotational movement indicating that a scan is in progress. and, At the end, a summarised report window opens. Example here -
this shows how many items were scanned, and reports on the 'threats' status.
I have tried to verify my claim above, by carrying out a number of 'tests', primarily to try and determine if User scheduled scan settings, are actually initiating the automatic update and scan by MSE.
The scheduled 'test' scan times have come and gone, without any visual evidence to show that MSE has automatically activated and conducted the scan, as set by User settings. None of the following show any evidence of a scan either starting, being 'in progress', or ever being carried out;
The MSE Icon does not activate. There is no post-scan report [as shown above from the manual scan]. and, A check of Windows Update, shows that no further Updated Definitions for MSE, have been added to Update History. I am beginning to suspect that because I use Firefox as my default browser, somehow this may disable or immobilise the automatic scheduled scan function of MSE. I also wonder how many other Users are experiencing the same difficulties.
I have just installed the above and updated the latest definititons, and as someone who knows, not a lot re.computers, does that mean it takers the place of an anti-virus programme? I have AVG installed and I'm happy with it. I'm not sure if the above will conflict with AVG as it says MSE it is a virus and spyware scanner.

View 8 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried this program and if so, what do you think of it. I currently have the free Avast 5.0 and of course Windows Defender. I was wondering if I should stay with what I got or get Windows Live Essentials Security. I understand when you install it that it will turn off Windows Defender and I would have to uninstall Avast. I thought maybe some of you that are using it would be able to comment.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy NIS 2010 runs out in 15 days, and instead of paying them $60 for another year I'm wondering if it's safe enough to just use MSE and the built in firewall.I never had any complaints with norton, it worked great, never noticed it at all, but I just can't justify spending $60 for something is MSE is at least or even almost as good.I haven't seen many independent tests of MSE,while I know that Norton is one of the best at detection and removal.

There is a new newsgroup on the *Microsoft* newsgroup server: (msnews.microsoft.com). The "IT" is not information technology, it's Italian! Ok, I'm all for supporting alternative languages, but why is *Microsoft* hosting a Windows7 newsgroup in Italian whereas they will not support a Windows 7 newsgroup in (the universal language of the web) English?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do the in-place upgrade - Vista Home Premium to W7 Home Premium. It says: "The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive." I just installed a new 320 gb hard drive and restored Vista on it. It works perfectly. 220 drive C: and about 80 gb D: so there should be no problem I checked each drive's properties to make sure each had much unused space - I came from an 80 gb disk.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis security update (see below) kept reappearing on my task bar wanting to be installed and I kept installing it. I finally checked and I have it on the list of installed updates a dozen times--but it still keeps appearing on my task bar asking to be installed. It's like a spell gone wrong. How do I stop it and/or get rid of it? I don't even have works 8 on my computer. Thanks, Don.

MS09-024: Description of the security update for Microsoft Works 8: June 9, 2009
This update keeps installing over and over It has now installed successfully 7 times and is shown as successful in the Update History list - 7 times!
I suppose I could uninstall VirtualPC since I have not been using it lately.
I should mention that it does not show up in the Control Panel | Progarams and Features Installed Updates list, though.
One other thing: VirtualPC is not supposed to work on Vista, but it does. In fact my son does development using it daily.
I keep getting a message that this update is ready to install. I have installed it about 10 times, but after it is installed, I get the update icon and the same update is there ready to be installed. When I look at the installation history, it shows that it has been installed successfully. HOW do I keep this update from showing up time after time? View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile everyone was expecting a public RC of the Wave 3 applications last week, a beta refresh made it out this week over at download.live.com. Windows Live Essentials, which refers to the suite of Windows Live client applications (as opposed to web services), consists of a long list of software: Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Toolbar, Family Safety, and Office Outlook Connector (which is mysteriously missing in this release). This release includes two new additions, Office Live Add-in (which allows you to open and save documents directly to your online workspace) as well as Silverlight.

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHaving steadily used Win 7 since the first public I entirely sympathize with those who label it Vista SP3.It is not significantly faster than Vista 64 SP2 on the same hardware and uses the same drivers. It hiccoughs over many of the same obstacles. When a device manufacturer, for example Canon, markets a "new printer" but it uses the same inks as prior generation printers, Canon is doing nothing more than selling the the old print engine in a new box.The reason Win 7 came out so "fast" by Microsoft standards is that mostly they just grafted a tweaked UI onto Vista SP2.Vista SP2 is the engine that runs Win 7: new or old/new?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have tried to find the windows 7 Newsgroup in this list of Newsgroup where this one on Vista is, but I do not get a hit. Is there one in this group that I can add to my list and use to ask some questions?
Windows Vista has a lot of pretty and nice graphics, and pretty colors, etc, but it is very difficult to find some thing there when you are lost and the folder systems is extremely complicated sometimes. I use Vista now, have had it for about two years now, and I still have difficulty finding the logic of the folder system sometimes. I don't think that my former Windows XP was so complicated (do people agree?) Is the new Windows 7 as complicated as Vista? (I do not have Windows 7 yet).
Why does Vista keep automatically unsubscribing me from this newsgroup? I am fully convinced that Vista is too unstable for use in any serious and/or critical applications. Having said that I still believe it is not far short of miraculous when compared to computing operations of thirty years ago.
