Support For Windows :Windows Essentials

Mar 30, 2010

I just read that Microsoft is stopping support of Windows Vista effective April 13, 2009.I hope this is not true since it means that system updates will be discontinued and Windows Essentials will no longer provide security for this Windows application.

Windows Live Essentials Security

Mar 20, 2010

Has anyone tried this program and if so, what do you think of it. I currently have the free Avast 5.0 and of course Windows Defender. I was wondering if I should stay with what I got or get Windows Live Essentials Security. I understand when you install it that it will turn off Windows Defender and I would have to uninstall Avast. I thought maybe some of you that are using it would be able to comment.

Windows Live Essentials (including Messenger) Beta Refresh

Dec 17, 2008

While everyone was expecting a public RC of the Wave 3 applications last week, a beta refresh made it out this week over at download.live.com. Windows Live Essentials, which refers to the suite of Windows Live client applications (as opposed to web services), consists of a long list of software: Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Toolbar, Family Safety, and Office Outlook Connector (which is mysteriously missing in this release). This release includes two new additions, Office Live Add-in (which allows you to open and save documents directly to your online workspace) as well as Silverlight.

Windows XP Support Extended Until 2014

Jun 27, 2008

Windows XP Support Extended until 2014. We can still use the best OS made from Microsoft until windows7 comes out. That way we can skip the horrible VISTA monster. Even though MS would like XP to vanish and everyone to buy Vista - Crapista many companies will still be offering XP with new computers via various workarounds.

The demand for XP will be very strong until and if a better version of windows than Vista the OS for MORONS, comes out Article: Microsoft has finally given in to public demand. The company has decided to offer technical support for Windows XP with updates and security patches for an extended period until April 2014. However, it will not go back on its decision to discontinue Windows XP sales after June 30.

This means that after June 30, Microsoft will stop distributing Windows XP as a stand-alone product, as well as stop licensing it to PC manufacturers like Dell, HP, Lenovo, and others. However, it doesn't mean that XP will disappear overnight. Consumers may still find copies of the software or computers pre-loaded with it for months, as stores and PC makers typically work through their inventories.......

Windows Vista Support Dialog Box

Feb 20, 2010

I have what amounts to a minor problem with my Help and support, but I would like to find out the cause of the problem (was it something I did) and fix it. The problem is best illustrated, so I have attached a screen capture of a typical Help and support dialog box. As illustrated, each discussion point has a red X on the selection button (sorry, do not know the proper term for this). works fine but the image or icon on each button is gone and only a red X remains.

Windows Mail Can No Longer Support HTTP

I have read that the solution to the error message that says that Windows Mail "can no longer support HTTP" is by installing Windows Live. I did install Windows Live, however, and the error still appears. What else has to be done?

Contact Folder: Windows Mail Doesn't Support Folders In The Contact Area

May 31, 2008

I'm very disappointed that windows mail doesn't support folders in the contact area. I hope some one from Microsoft see this and they reconsider putting a update to re add this feature. I just got this computer and already I want to send it back. I really need folders to keep my contacts sorted. Either add the option or let me download the old Outlook to install. And buying Office outlook is not a option.

Enable Legacy Windows Help File Support (.hlp File)

Nov 9, 2009

Microsoft removed the legacy Windows Help .hlp file viewer, winhlp32.exe, from Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. Dating back to Windows 3.1, Microsoft says the Windows Help components have not been updated in years and no longer meets internal standards.  If you have an older application that still uses .hlp files and must be able to view .hlp files Microsoft has released an add-on that will restore the viewer...

Microsoft Security Essentials

Aug 3, 2009

The Microsoft Security Essentials proved itself. My notebook started to run weird, lately. I was suspicious and start scan the whole system with McAfee, however it stopped on 11% of scan and showed me the error. I started it once more, but it was disabled again.

I have been using the Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows 7 and because I was thinking about switching to this AV on the Vista at the end of this year, I got rid of the McAfee Total Security and installed the Microsoft, just to give it a try on Vista. Yes, it found and destroyed the trojan in the System32. Today, it blocked the another one during browsing the web.

Needed - Security Essentials Instead Of Norton 2010

Oct 18, 2009

My NIS 2010 runs out in 15 days, and instead of paying them $60 for another year I'm wondering if it's safe enough to just use MSE and the built in firewall.I never had any complaints with norton, it worked great, never noticed it at all, but I just can't justify spending $60 for something is MSE is at least or even almost as good.I haven't seen many independent tests of MSE,while I know that Norton is one of the best at detection and removal.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Is It Really Scanning To Your Sheduled Settings?

Feb 24, 2010

I am concerned that Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] is not performing as it should, because it doesn't appear to be activating and running a scan as scheduled under Settings.

If I open MSE and choose to click on the Scan Now button to carry out a Manual Scan on demand, then three events are clearly visible in 'real time' -
There is activity on the progress bar of the window that opens, and files being scanned are clearly seen. The MSE Icon in the Notification Tray shows rotational movement indicating that a scan is in progress. and, At the end, a summarised report window opens. Example here -

this shows how many items were scanned, and reports on the 'threats' status.

I have tried to verify my claim above, by carrying out a number of 'tests', primarily to try and determine if User scheduled scan settings, are actually initiating the automatic update and scan by MSE.

The scheduled 'test' scan times have come and gone, without any visual evidence to show that MSE has automatically activated and conducted the scan, as set by User settings. None of the following show any evidence of a scan either starting, being 'in progress', or ever being carried out;

The MSE Icon does not activate. There is no post-scan report [as shown above from the manual scan]. and, A check of Windows Update, shows that no further Updated Definitions for MSE, have been added to Update History. I am beginning to suspect that because I use Firefox as my default browser, somehow this may disable or immobilise the automatic scheduled scan function of MSE. I also wonder how many other Users are experiencing the same difficulties.

Windows Update Kills Windows Mail On Windows 7

May 12, 2010

If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer, yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20

Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20

The Recommended Updates Was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 For Windows Vista For X64-systems (11,8MB).

Aug 19, 2008

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).

The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:

Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900

I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

Unable To Open Attachments In Windows Mail: Windows Cannot Find File Name

Jul 29, 2009

There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

Managed To Corrupt: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer....

Nov 22, 2007

I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...

I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........

Windows Could Not Start The Windows Audio Service On Local Computer

Jan 3, 2009

My speaker icon in the taskbar has a red cross on it. When I hover my mouse over it, it says "The audio service is not running", if I right click it I get 3 options

1. Playback devices
2. Recording devices
3. Sounds

I went to my start menu and searched services.msc and checked to see if plug and play, windows audio endpoint builder, and multimedia class scheduler were all set to startup type automatic & all started. they were. so then i go to Windows Audio, right click to properties, and it is stopped. So i click to start it and it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."

I tried to restore my computer but my restore point is past the point when this issue originated. Also, Conexant Driver is installed and working properly. If I right click on the volume icon with a little red X through it... I can click on Open Volume Mixer, and It says "No Audio Device Installed" Yet, my audio devices are installed.
