Vista Home premium SP2, IE8, WLM. I have Avast! and Spybot Search&Destroy. Would like to hear opinions about MS Security Essentials. If I do decide to install MSSE, do I need to uninstall what?
View 8 RepliesThe Microsoft Security Essentials proved itself. My notebook started to run weird, lately. I was suspicious and start scan the whole system with McAfee, however it stopped on 11% of scan and showed me the error. I started it once more, but it was disabled again.
I have been using the Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows 7 and because I was thinking about switching to this AV on the Vista at the end of this year, I got rid of the McAfee Total Security and installed the Microsoft, just to give it a try on Vista. Yes, it found and destroyed the trojan in the System32. Today, it blocked the another one during browsing the web.
The Microsoft Security Essentials beta is now available for download for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. The build number is 1.0.1407.00.

I was wondering if I should stay with what I got or get Windows Live Essentials Security. I understand when you install it that it will turn off Windows Defender and I would have to uninstall Avast. I thought maybe some of you that are using it would be able to comment.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy NIS 2010 runs out in 15 days, and instead of paying them $60 for another year I'm wondering if it's safe enough to just use MSE and the built in firewall.I never had any complaints with norton, it worked great, never noticed it at all, but I just can't justify spending $60 for something is MSE is at least or even almost as good.I haven't seen many independent tests of MSE,while I know that Norton is one of the best at detection and removal.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am concerned that Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] is not performing as it should, because it doesn't appear to be activating and running a scan as scheduled under Settings.
If I open MSE and choose to click on the Scan Now button to carry out a Manual Scan on demand, then three events are clearly visible in 'real time' -
There is activity on the progress bar of the window that opens, and files being scanned are clearly seen. The MSE Icon in the Notification Tray shows rotational movement indicating that a scan is in progress. and, At the end, a summarised report window opens. Example here -
this shows how many items were scanned, and reports on the 'threats' status.
I have tried to verify my claim above, by carrying out a number of 'tests', primarily to try and determine if User scheduled scan settings, are actually initiating the automatic update and scan by MSE.
The scheduled 'test' scan times have come and gone, without any visual evidence to show that MSE has automatically activated and conducted the scan, as set by User settings. None of the following show any evidence of a scan either starting, being 'in progress', or ever being carried out;
The MSE Icon does not activate. There is no post-scan report [as shown above from the manual scan]. and, A check of Windows Update, shows that no further Updated Definitions for MSE, have been added to Update History. I am beginning to suspect that because I use Firefox as my default browser, somehow this may disable or immobilise the automatic scheduled scan function of MSE. I also wonder how many other Users are experiencing the same difficulties.
I have just installed the above and updated the latest definititons, and as someone who knows, not a lot re.computers,does that mean it takers the place of an anti-virus programme? I have AVG installed and I'm happy with it. I'm not sure if the above will conflict with AVG as it says MSE it is a virus and spyware scanner.

the trick...or at least so far so go.
I've just copied a 200MB file from PC to server and it went like a rocket!
In addition, I'm noting a responsiveness in the odd application; for
example, I use Windows Mail to access USENET, and under SP1, I'm in and
starting browsing much quicker - pre-SP1 there would be a slight delay
before I could pick a NG.
Hardly a scientific study, but a few visible improvements and no bugs
spotted... can't be bad.
Vista Home Premium I am psyching myself up to installing SP2 but would like to hear a few Microsoft-MVP's opinions. So far I've heard of people experiencing all kinds of problems, more than previous updates in Vista and XP - I had no trouble with either, including Vista SP1, but I suspect there may be some bugs to watch out for.

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

I have set up a network account with the correct details. My system does connect to the network, however, in the network screen the network is shown as "incorrect security information, WEP security required"

Unable to send mail problem was sporadic. Had Norton 2007. Took it in to tech support for service and they upgraded to 2008. At forum suggestion, deleted Norton and used the symantec utility to remove the remaining pieces. Replaced Norton with CA Suite. One person thought the Norton proxy may not be able to be removed................
ive got windows vista home premium 32, it was all running fine with McAfee internet secuiryt no problems at all, then all of a sudden my McAfee could'nt update and asked me to reinstall the software, so i uninstalled it all and tried to reinstall it, but when i started to it came up with download error 12029. after looking around people said i might have a virus or spyware, downloaded malwherebytes and removed the viruses and spyware, then downloaded AVG free version and did another scan it found more stuff which now it has removed, i then ran another scan and it says the computer is clean. now other problems are occuring
1. still getting the download error from mcafee (ive also used the removal tool and preinstall from there site)
2. window won't update, just keep getting errors
3. windows defender won't turn on
4. some programs update and some won't
I moved my computer (Vista Business x32) from a domain (no longer available) to my work group. My domain account had local admin privileges on the machine so I was able to move the machine from the domain to the local work group (domain, admin, domain admin account are all gone). However, I forgot to create a local machine account before I rebooted and now I can't log in at all.I can log in or would I need to reinstall the OS?

Im not sure if i want it anymore but i need to be 100% sure of another program before i uninstall the other one. I also wanted to know if it is possible to have 2 security protection on your computer at once. Up until yesterday everything has been working fine for the past month since I built a new system. Now all of a sudden my computer is crashing on me. No BSOD. Just shuts down and reboots. Last night this occured 5 times in the space of 4 hours..
Looking in my events log all I can see occuring at the times of the crashes is this information: Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

I don't use windows firewall as I use the firewall built into Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. Checking though that programs logs shows nothing happening at the time of the crashes. After googling this and looking on Microsoft's site I am stumped at what I can do to resolve this. I do have windows updates on automatic and I recall an update occuring 2 days ago.
I leave my pc running to allow various programs to run during the course of the day; however, other users manage to shutdown the system without any thought for my login "at work". Does anybody know of a "Shutdown Password" facility I can use which prevents this from happening?- I know I'm still at risk from the power supply being switched off.

i have a vista computer with bullguard pre installed.Whenever i start up,a balloon at the bottom of the screen tells me defender is out of date.However,it has always been impossible to update this or indeed download any windows updates since i bought the computer new a few months ago.
