Major Startup Issue

Jan 22, 2010

I have had my vista home premium system for a little over a year with no real issues. The other day I did a system restart . The manufactures logo which normally comes up for about 20 seconds before moving on to the microsoft welcome screen stayed on for at least 5 minutes and then the screen went black for a couple of minutes. Then a short blinking cursor with a message that "Bios not installed!", then black for several minutes and then a message that the pc could not start and I was prompted to select an option for automatic repair. I did so and after about 10 minutes and an automated system restore , my system booted up and everything seemed to run ok. This morning I decided to try a restart again. While I did not get any messages to run any repairs, the system did stay at the manufactures logo for several minutes, then a black screen for several more minutes before finally getting to the microsoft welcome screen. Does anyione have any insight as to what might be happening and how to fix this?

I have windows vista home premium, service pack 2. Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600. 4GB Ram, 32 bit operating system.

Major NVIDIA GeForce: Graphics Become Distorted

Aug 17, 2008

I just now decided to join but I've been looking around the forums for a while now as a guest. Recently I was referred to the website laptopvideo2go.com by these forums. I went there and because I had the old factory installed version 98.15 driver for my NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, I decided to download one of the newer ones. By the way, I have a HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop. The driver that I chose was 7.15.0011.7770. It installed correctly and everything worked fine except for the fact that whenever I logged on, the screen would flash black and the graphics would become distorted and blurry and my desktop icons would look really magnified. But then, a few seconds later, the black screen would flash again and the graphics would go back to normal and everything would Today, however, the graphics did not revert back to normal. Everything stayed really big and fuzzy. I thought that since the driver that I downloaded from laptopvideo2go.com was not digitally signed, or whatever, that it was the problem. So, I went to the HP website and proceeded to download the original NVIDA update (98.15), that I had previously, for my driver.

It installed like normal until it got halfway in the installation loading bar. Then, my computer suddenly restarted itself and said that Windows did not start correctly and gave me the option to run some repair thing. I did, and it couldn't fix anything. So, I restarted again and got the same thing and went into safe mode and uninstalled my driver. Then, I updated the driver with the same 98.15 update and it worked and told me that I needed to restart. So I did and I got the "Windows did not start correctly" message again and I went into safe mode. The driver had not installed and everything was still big and fuzzy. However, the driver was still deleted. So, I restarted again, got the same message, and went into "Last known good configuration" mode, which I am in now. And, of course, the display is still really big and fuzzy. if you select the start normally option instead of the repair option, it will proceed to load with the Windows loading bar but will do that automatic restart thing before it gets to the Windows Vista logo every time. So, it's like a never-ending loop of restarts. I did some research online and I found out nothing, so I guess that my problem is unique. I'd really like to have my computer's original crystal-clear graphics back, but right now the priority is actually getting it to log on.

I installed the game earlier and then got a dll error when I tried to start the game so I did a quick search of the net and found a fix (install latest DirectX 9, it runs longside DirectX 9) The game then started, in the main menu I noticed some white flickering and when I started the actual game there was just major graphical corruption everywhere, it was unplayable. I am using the 174 nvidia drivers, here are my specs:-.... I just can't figure it out. Has anybody else got this game running fine on Vista Ultimate 64?.

Registry And Deleted The Item From The Startup Tab And Disabled Startup Tab

I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

Startup

Nov 5, 2009

I dl'd Mozilla Firefox a day ago, and everything dl'd correctly and completely. But, when I shut down the cpu, it wouldn't start up at all. I did every diagnostic i could let the cpu do, ran a system restore (went all the way back to 10/25/09 restore point). then, i got it to run in safe mode. played with start-up options, and got the desktop to come up in normal mode, but then got error msg 0x800106ba (windows defender won't load), this meant that none of my security stuff loaded either. i ran a chkdisc thing too, and it stopped when looking through file data (stopped at 16%). thus, i am running the cpu in safe mode with networking, and the cpu is running fine. i know this means that there is a file issue. but i am not sure how to find it.

Msascul.exe? Startup?

Sep 19, 2009

i have begun to notice a particular startup item by the name of MSASCul.exe, now google has been confusing it with MSASCui.exe which turns out to be windows defender, so still somewhat confused i have obtained autoruns and tried a verification on msascul.exe only for autoruns to come back as not verified, googling so far the correct msascul.exe has brought little information up and would hopefully like some verification on if its a genuine executable or some little nasty i need to catch.

ENABLING Log On At Startup

I had my laptop out for repairs, and when I got it back they had enabled the auto log on at startup. I don't like this because that way anyone could get into my computer when they turn it on.

How do I DIS-able this? I've found plenty of sites that enables it, but I don't want it on. Undoing the checkmark in the place that does it on Vista doesn't seem to do the trick.

Hangs During Startup

Oct 23, 2008

I have built up a new system...been running perfectly since August 2008.

2 nights ago I had just finished an update to itunes and some other apple software which required a restart. Upon restart, the system hung while booting.didn't get to the user account log-in screen.it froze with a blackscreen with the mouse cursor sitting there in the middle.

I have done the following things and observed the following behaviour:I have not added any hardware to the system Windows Update has doing automatic updates the systems boots and runs perfectly in safe mode with networking I have reverted to a couple of different restore points prior to installing the apple software...no change I have disabled all non-Microsoft software from starting up via Windows Defender...no change I can get the system to boot to where it displays the user accounts login screen. When I click on an account and enter the password it will hang at that point. Mouse continues to respond but no further response. Disk drive light goes solid but no sound of the disk operating If at the user account log in screen I select to shut the system down it will hang during shutdown checking the event logs shows a range of various fatal errors.I can provide more info on this at later posts if needed but the messages look quite similar to other posts given for a range of different behaviours so I am not sure which if any are relevant. Booting to the Vista CD and doing a repair found no errors. In short, my perfectly happy and functioning system has suddenly gone mental for no obvious reason.

Defender Won't Run At Startup

May 5, 2008

I've just noticed that Defender isn't running, even though the Registry key(HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun) is there. The path specified by this key (%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe -hide) is valid. I can copy and paste it into a Run box and the process appears in the Task Manager (and stays there until I reboot). If I view the System Startup page in Spybot S&D the key exists. I've actually changed '%ProgramFiles%' to 'C:Program Files' (without the quotes) to see if it makes a difference - it doesn't. If I view the Startups tab in The Ultimate Troubleshooter it
finds the key but shows File Not Found in the Launch Command field.I'm at a bit of a loss. I thought perhaps the permissions had got screwed up for either the Windows Defender folder or the executable itself, but if that were the case, should I be able to run the command manually? In any case, the permissions can't be edited. Everything's greyed out.I'm quite happy to run without Defender; I'd just rather be the one who
decides. I'm concerned that to all intents and purposes it's supposed to be running but isn't.

Cant Startup My Computer!

Jul 29, 2009

whenevr i start my computer it goes to a black screen that gives me 2 options:

1. fix start-up problams (recommended) -or something like that

2. start windows normally

whenever i choose the 1st option it waits 2 seconds and then goes back to that black screen the secont option- it starts loading windows for a long time (about a minut, a minut and a half) and then it gives me a blue screen that says something about problems (i cant read it, becouys it disappears 2 fast-there are percents running down...) and than goes back 2 tha black screen. i pressed some buttons and then it gave me some options , i chose 2 start windows in a safe mode, but -again!!!!-that damn black SCREEN

again, i pressed some buttons and it gave me the same optionsa and i chose to boot windows in a way that it would give me the last document it faild 2 open or something like that (that's what the description said, anyway...). it gave me another blue screen (after he tried starting windows) that gave me some kinda data path and the said: partitons: 2 and then something in '[ ]' and lower it said: enter=submit. esc=cancel. silly of me, i know, but i pressed enter, and it brought me to a blue screen that said: *** STOP: 0X0000005C ( 0X0000010B,0X00000003, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). i run a searc in google and all the people who had this problem said they first tried 2 install a new windows- but i didnt!!! the computer worked just fine, and then it fell from a height of about 4 feet, but it kept working until my sister closed it and the opened again.

Startup, Desktop, And Around

Mar 4, 2009

I'm having problems with Vista on my parents office computer, and i'm trying to keep from having to reinstall everything! I've looked all over google trying to find other peeps with the same problem, but I still havn't found a solution. The computer is an HP Pavilion, with Vista Home Premium. While starting up, after the welcome screen, it takes me to my desktop. All I can see is the curser and the background. It's as if explorer.exe will not start.

I can't start explorer.exe, because ctrl, alt, dlt, will not work at all. I've tried this in safe mode also, but it yields the same results. I've also gone into command prompt and checked the regedit to see if the shell or w/e for explorer.exe was screwed up, but everything looks fine there. And regedit is the only thing I have been able to start in command prompt, system restore and explorer.exe will not start from there, well, they will start but they will not display at all. Its like everything is running in the background.

64-bit Hangs During Startup

Dec 30, 2008

I've been having major troubles getting my Vista 64-bit box to start up reliably.

Symptoms: During startup my Vista 64-bit machine unexpectedly "powers off" and the power button, reset button, and power switch stop working until I unplug the power cable on the back and plug it back in.

Workaround: If I boot into safe mode first, I can usually reboot back into Windows normally.

Triggers: This doesn't happen every time, although usually after Windows Update forces me to reboot it will happen. There was a power outage today and it took several reboots and unplugging the computer to get it to boot again afterwards.

Other issues: Lately when I try to put Vista to sleep, it doesn't always go into low power mode and seems to just leave everything on. Sometimes it never sleeps and goes back to the login screen immediately.

When the system dies, it usually makes this high-pitched whining noise just beforehand that I think may be the CPU - this noise happens on every boot, whether successful or not, but might be a clue about what triggers the power-off.
