On start up my laptop dispaly the desktop error message: Could not load or run '""' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry. This makes no sense to me at all.
View 5 RepliesI had no problems yesterday or ever before. Apparently there was an update last night, and since then my desktop won't start up. It gives me the error saying windowssystem32driversfltmgr.sys will not load. I did a system restore to the system checkpoint before that update last night - to no avail though. I've done the automatic startup checker twice using the vista installation disk, it says there aren't any problems. is there anyway to just replace this fltmgr.sys from another vista machine? won't boot to safe mode, same error. last known good configuration doesn't work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen it is turned on it shows the HP logo and options like ESC, F9, F11, etc. But won't load any farther then that. This happened after they just shut it down one night and never worked again. I can't press any options at that screen, it's basically froze, Unless I start pressing it right when i turn the computer one and it will say for ex. above it "loading boot menu". It has never has passed that and gotten onto the POST screen.
Things I have tried- Unplugging various hardware like HD, DVD-ROM, took out the ram and tested one at a time in both slots, took out battery for 20m, reset CMOS from jumper on Mobo. Nothing I do is working. If anyone has an idea I would be more then happy to hear it.
Whenever I try to load vista it seems to be loading fine, but will stop once the icons start filling the taskbar. Sometimes I can try and run a program, but the start bar will freeze and the program will not load, however most of the time it will just freeze before this. It's taking a really long time to even get onto the desktop screen as well. The computer loads fine in Safe Mode (which is where I am typing this from). I have tried startup repair and it says there are no errors, tried to do a bootlog but I don't know where Windows writes the file to(although from a quick search, it appears it's not much use anyway) and I've tried system restore which completed correctly, but did not solve my problem. I actually had this problem a little while ago, and had to reinstall my system from the Dell backup, however I've just moved into digs at Uni and of course all the stuff I would want to reinstall is at home, not to forget that it takes so long. Spec is: Dell Studio 1555 Laptop, Dual Core T4200 Processor @ 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 512MB ATI mobility Radeon HD 4570, running Vista Home Premium 64Bit on SP2

I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.
The last couple of days I had a few times a startup error. It said something like Windows couldn't start normally. Run Startup Recovery (Recommended) Start Windows Normally. I did the Startup Recovery and then it worked again but the next day or so the same thing, otherwise my system runs fine.

Every game I play crashes, or fails to load at all, or gets into the game and crashes during map load. I have Vista Ultimate 64 installed. I have installed and re-installed the OS multiple times to no effect. I've downloaded all of the windows updates. During one of my first installs of vista, I was able to get in to games of codwaw, but then it would crash after about 5 secs.......

it also has a hard update (i.e. manually downloaded .exe file) as teh self updater wouldn't find it, but now it keeps crashing on loadup where it shows developer logos.
Problems started back in the middle of Sept (1 1/2 months ago). I logged several hrs, over 3 days, over the phone w/ Microsoft Tech support. Unfortunately, were unable to pin point the problem. They said it was probably a conbination of spyware and viruses. Here are some of the issues acurring:
I have 2 accts. Mine, (which has administrator privlages), and a Guest acct. Every time I log in to my administrator account, my desktop does NOT load. A TEMP user account is created. With all new desktop settings, etc. I receive an error message saying that my user profile was/did not load correctly. A Temporary user account has been created. Any changes tothis acct will not be saved. Many of my programs are screwed up. ie; Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word. My Microsoft Word created each time, as if for the first time. But will not load 100%. The only way I am able to access my files, (Docs, music, photos, etc.), is by going to start, go into Computer, click C:/ drive, click on users, click on emilee. And there are all my folders file files.

The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs loadwith UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success.I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs.
it seems as though my CPU enjoys spinning up to 100% load. I'm not entirely sure why. It might be because I have an old CPU and motherboard (Athlon 64 3700+, which is, of course, single core and an Asus A8N-32 SLI Deluxe) but it never happened with XP Pro (unless I was doing something super intensive).
So, here's the deal: it sounds like something is spinning up but it's not my hard drives. Could it be the chip fan? It happens when I'm playing video games and, more recently, when I've been loading something even moderately graphics intense on the internets (I use Firefox 3.0.10, which has been crashing a bit lately, but that's not the issue here, hehe). Could it be the graphics card? Though I don't see why that would put a huge load on my CPU. (The card is an nVidia 8800 GT.)
There doesn't seem to be anyone one process that is causing this; the processes with the massive load change while whatever it is is spinning and the CPU is at 100% load.
I installed Vista recently and now, when I've got all updates and I've installed few programs into Windows like Visual Studio, Mobile Device Center, some SDKs etc, every time the system is idle the CPU load is 50%, not exactly, but about 50%.
So I've tried to determine which process makes this CPU load. After Alt Ctrl Delete and Task Manager I haven't got to know anything. I've installed Process Explorer from Sysinternals. He told me process "System" makes this high load. I've tried to "kill" process "System". Yes, load felt down. But this isn't solution because after reboot it's the same.
I switched to Vista from XP but I have now a problem. I am using an old DOS program which needs some settings in SETVER.EXE I am asked to load this program in CONFIG.SYS (or CONFIG.NT) and so I added there the line device="c:xxxsetver.exe" But when I call setver.exe it says that it is not loaded. I have been able to load this program in Windows 2000 and XP without problem
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a new machine with Vista Home Premium. I find when browsing in IE8 it works fine for a while then it just can't seem to load any pages even my home page. No message, just a blank screen and the green bar across the bottom sitting there about half way across and doesn't go any further as if it can't load the page. I have cleaners I have tried but the only thing that works is to restart my machine.

My laptop runs vista ult 64 also so I checked the syswow64 folder for the file but it wasn't in there. why would this file be in desktop install of vista but not my laptop. I've ran multiple spyware and virus scans with nothing turning up.
I can open google, search with google, but IE does not open any of the links! I tried to load firefox or chrome, but IE won't open the pages! Also, I can't update Windows. I tried to check for problems in connection, result was no problems found. Obviously I'm connected, because google works fine. Nothing else (virus, Win updates) does.

The application can not load under Vista Home Premium x64 the API .dll residing in system 32. needless to say that everything worked fine with Windows XP. I have no clue where the problem is. Is there any security Vista that I'm not aware of?

I am graciously inquiring for experts' opinions on whether or not to load the 64 bit verson since my basic use will only be home office, some photo editing and some gaming. I have also read that there are a lot of software compatibility issues with 64 bit. Just looking for general opinions. (My desktop is quite capable of supporting Vista 64 bit).

I had XP on a system I just built for a friend but now I have been trying to install Vista 64 on his new gammin rig. Howeve Ive found that the load process seems to be locking up. The first time I tried to load it, it just sat at 0% in Expanding files, the second time at 18% and were talking 30 mins at a time. One of them is AI Suite, which has a couple of features including the OC program AI booster. For some reason when I try to OC to over 10%, Vista won't load. If anyone knows a better OC program please tell me or help me with this program. The version of AI Suite is 1.03.16. Just so you know, when I overclock to 10%, my CPU temperature stays at or under 40 degrees Celsius. When every CPU core is a 100%, the temperature is 56 degrees Celsius.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi have Corsair XMS2 DDR2 1GBx2 memory sticks in my computer, i installed vista with this Ram and then after installation decided to place another 2GB's of RAM. My issue currently is that Windows Vista will not load with 4GB's of Ram or even 3GB's. When i try to re-install Windows Vista with the new RAM in my pc restarts before installation begins, when i plug the ram in and try to run Vista normally, it either restarts at the loading screen or just crashes completely......
I have heard that there is a windows update which may resolve this issue however you need 3GB's of RAM installed, which my computer wont allow. Any Bios related or any solution in general, could you please go into great detail and if possible step by step guides of how to fix this problem, i have a basic bios knowledge however take my knowledge as 0. the first problem that I have had since using Vista. I use Snapfish to upload pictures from my digital camera. I have had no trouble getting into that site until yesterday. Now I cannot load www.snapfish.com, but I can load all other web sites that I normally use. I've re-booted the computer and the modem, and run the Vista diagnostics, but cannot find the reason for being able to load any other web site but not www.snapfish.com. I am able to load it using a Wi-Fi laptop, but not using my desktop.

View 4 Replies View Relatedso here's the situation...i'll just spit it all out and hopefully you can make of it what you will: System freezes up...without warning...without stutter. It's as if im looking at a screenshot of my screen on paper (no faded out windows from unresponsiveness and no moving mouse)...and it happens instantly and swiftly. Completely random too, no difference if I have a load on it or not. Also happens when the screensaver is up. When I boot the computer...the mobo splash screen won't go away unless I have my HP C4180 disconnected...(what the heck?). the printer does have a card reader...but there's no card in it. With the splash disabled...it seems to be halting at the USB Mass Storage detection. is there any way to fix this? Both issues appeared 3 weeks after I build the machine...so maybe drivers or something? I've run the latest version of memtest for over an hour...and it hadn't brought up any errors...

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy situation i have a set duel channel 1 gig a-dat memory ddr 400 2gig total memory works for 3 years, still works great. I bought the same memory, set duel channel 1 gig a-dat memory ddr 400 and installed them on my vista 64 bit system the bios reads 4gig np but windows will not load (windows error recovery) no specific error listed. I then took out my original memory and left the new in the newly used duel chanel slots on my motherboard. Both the new memory and the previuosly unused ram slots work fine. I have repeatly installed all 4 gig same problem (windows error recovery) and always works fine with either set of in either duel chanels on my motherboard. I have windows vista 64 bit.

They both seem to be having the same problem with IE 7 or 8 refusing to load pages after surfing for a period of time. They both say a reboot is necessary to restore IE to usability. View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is what happened I woke up at 6 to go work, i left my laptop on all night, so i decideto shut it off before i go to work.I JUST came back, and when i start it, the HP loading screen works,then it loaded in my vista home premium. i type my password, but it wasfrozen already.
So i restarted my laptop. and it loads teh HP screen, then blank screen. I tried to wait for 10-15 mins. still blank screen.
I tried to use the PHXBIOS and did a Hard Disk self test.
