I am thinking of updating to Vista from Windows XP, and would like to know if Vista Mail filtering provided any improvement on Outlook Express. In particular can filtering be done on news header fields like

News Groups Mail Does Not Access

May 11, 2008

I use Outlook for my e-mails. Unfortunately, Outlook does not have access to news groups. When I go to Mail to get access to the news groups, Mail downloads all of the e-mails since I last used Mail. It may have been weeks since my last use of Mail so the list is rather long (hundreds). Is there any way to stop downloading all of these e-mails that I have already dealt with on Outlook? Why does Outlook not provide access to Newsgroups?

Can't News Group Setup Refuse Mail This Name

Apr 15, 2010

Im going to sound like a Neophyte question. Why is it that this newsgroup is hijacked by this guy Keven and what ever the heck he is doing. I dont get it. Cant this news group be set up to refuse mail from this name. Im not critical really I just dont understand, with all the technology today, surely the moderator has the power to stop his eamil address. And if he creates a new one put it in. Ive neverrun a news group so I may be in the dark.

My second question is perhaps more phylisophical. I dont get what he is doing, I mean the messages are stupid. At least if they are ads for drugs I get it he is selling something but, these messages I just dont get ?? What is the point of it all. I hope Im not focusing too much attention on this I just dont get these two questions. Its amazing how one guy can be such a fool?? I flag it as spam but no one seems to do anything about it??

Windows Mail News Group Access

Mar 4, 2009

I use Windows mail for my e-mail and news group access. When I access my comcast e-mail (where all the info is correctly entered and stored in the account setup) I have no problem. When I try to access my newsgroup (where all my info is correctly entered and stored in the account setup) a Windows Security window pops up, displays my Vista PC administrator symbol and asks me for a user name and password to access the newsgroup account. I enter the correct info and Windows Security screen will not accept it. I had never ever been asked for a user name and password by a Windows Security Pop Up before and it doesn't ask me for that info on my e-mail.

Windows Default Mail And News Warning *Every* Time Open Windows Mail Up!

Mar 7, 2009

I've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

My Doucments Display Fields

Feb 17, 2009

This may have been covered somewhere, but I couldn't figure what to search on. This is happening on two different Vista machines. If I open "My Documents", details view, the folders are listed "normally" showing date modified, size, etc. But, if I open a sub-folder, the contents are displayed as pictures, Name, Date Taken, Tag, etc. Then, if I open another sub-folder, the contents are listed as music with fields, name, artist, album, etc.

IF, I navigate to the folders under My Computer, they display normally and all is good. I have TONS of documents, so I have them sorted by year. 2004, 2005, 2006, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then by topic or whatever underneath. I typically list them by date so that my most recent files are grouped together, but now listing by date isn't an option and it's tough to find anything. I've tried My Documents, Properties, Customize, Template, Documents, Apply to sub-folders. Did no good.

Cursor Jumps Fields --Tab Key?

Jan 6, 2009

My cursor (not the mouse cursor) won't stay in one place. It jumps from field to field in just about every program I use, going from left to right, just like I'm pushing down the tab button on the keyboard. I'm on a desktop and not a laptop. It makes it very hard to type or to chose options in pop up windows. It makes the scroll bars move all by themselves too. I tried updating my keyboard driver without any improvement.

Advanced Windows Firewall: Turn On Outbound Filtering

Feb 11, 2007

Windows Vista includes a two-way firewall that has outbound filtering disabled by default. Why? The best explanation that I got was that it was too complicated for end-users to use so they had that feature turned off as well as hidden.  In fact, it is hidden so well that many users may think that the two-way firewall was yet another feature that was pulled from the final product.  While that is true for other features the two-way firewall made it into the final product, you just need to know how to find it.

To get started, just click on the Start Button and key in wf.msc and hit Enter. This will bring up the comprehensive Windows Firewall with Advanced Security management interface.  Here you will be able to configure rules for incoming as well as outgoing connections.
Make sure that you set the default action for outbound connections from allow to block.  Otherwise the outbound firewall will be useless because it will allow all connections.  This can be done from the Windows Firewall Properties link found on the main screen of the management interface.

Removing IP Address From Header?

Jun 18, 2009

Using Windows Mail to access my subscription newsreader. When I highlight a message, right-click, click on PROPERTIES, then click on MESSAGE SOURCE, on some posts I see the originator's IP address while others do not show the IP address. It appears that this is NOT the IP address of the originating computer, but, of the originating ISP -- right? For example, when I trace the IP address shown in my posts, it shows the location of my ISP, which is miles away from me. Is there any way to configure Windows Mail so the IP address is not shown on outgoing posts?

Opening Intranet Webpage With Host Header

Mar 17, 2009

I wasn't sure whether to post this under the Vista section, in the server section, or in IE7 because I'm not sure where the problem resides. We are hosting a sharepoint website on a server 2003 computer running IIS 6. I set up host headers in IIS and Access Mappings in WSS, and everything works perfectly for workstations with XP Pro.

The workstations that are running Windows Vista Business cannot connect to the site via the host header name. All clients are running IE7, and are up to date. The IP address of the server is being resolved just fine when using the host header value.

Fields Automatically Fill "////////////////////"

Oct 28, 2009

I have Vista and when I open any application with fields, even when I click "start" and in the search field, something starts filling in "////////////////////" and doesn't stop until the field limit is reached if it ever is. Sometimes, when I think I've been spared today, it doesn't start filling it in until I put the cursor in the field and other times still yet it doesn't start until I start typing in the
field. In all events, the computer is making a weird multiple short beeping sound probably for every "/" it enters. I'm up-to-date with my McAfee definitions and my computer is scanned nightly at 3am for virus. I'm up-to-date with my Microsoft updates including Vista Service Pack 2.

Connecting To News Servers

Mar 23, 2008

Is there a way to set WIN MAIL so that it doesn't open a post when I connect to a server? In Outlook Express IIRC when I connected to a server it didn't open anything until I actually selected a message. WIN MAIL seems to open almost any post on the server at random. It's not the last post I read and I'm not even sure it's one that I have read in the past--it just seems pretty random. I'd just like it to sit there with the preview pane blank until I select a message. Is there any way to have that happen?
