View 7 RepliesThis is not a joke! I started to hear sporadically some music and voice on my PC, like if I was listening to a radio station; I have no such application on my system. When this is happening, only ordinary applications (like Outlook or Word) are running. Stopping all the applications does not make any difference. When it happens, I have noticed that a process called 17134.exe is running and is consuming quite a lot of memory space. At start-up of my system, the original memory space used by that process is around 2000K but when I start hearing the sounds, the amount of memory used is around 58000K and varying; it uses between 10 to 30% of CPU. If I stop the process, the situation goes back to normal, no more sounds. The description of the process is ???Unload PerfMon Counters???. I looked for a file named 17134.exe on my disk but there is no such file. When I start my system, I have a window with an error message: 17134.exe application error, click OK to terminate the program. The process is recreated automatically. I make sure that my anti-virus is always up-to-date and I ran a full scan on my system. Nothing unusual was detected. I would like to know if that process is legitimate, and why it behaves like that.

Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. Any program that operates under windows explorer fails to run properly. This makes it very difficult to use the computer. What exactly is wrong? Do I need to repair the registry? What if I did not make a backup?
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter fighting to get rid of a Trojan horse virus, I am missing the internet browser. E-mail works OK. Clicking 'Internet' icon gets me the message 'Internet Explorer has stopped working:". I tried 'restore' but it is not working either. I get the message 'an unspecified error occurred during system restore'. I scanned with AVG and the files it scanned are clean. I have a 'restore' DVD made by the computer vendor but when I stick it in the CD drive nothing happens. The computer is a 1 year old ACER with VISTA home premium preinstalled. How do I proceed from here? I have no idea what to do.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
The svchost seems to be spiking my physical memory at startup to around 80%.. and it only drops to around 75% And i also know that my computer cannot run to about 93-98% on memory because i suspect Faulty ram from previous problems of mine.( I will be replacing it with 4gb in 1to 2 weeks) Also after disabling Pc tools threatfire & Pc tools firewall i seem to be getting alot of processes which are also playing with my phiscal memory %. b4 i uninstalled The pc tools programs there was only 2-3 svchosts.exe now there are about 13 of them..

I've had windows vista on my laptop for over a year (it came with it) and it's pretty slick and clean looking but why isn't it compatible with a lot of software! like for instance, the window's chess game...worked twice then never worked again...always gives the "executable for chess game has stopped working". I gave up on that. another one, iTunes...has numerous problems in running. Now, I've just recently gotten the sims 2 deluxe and it was running okay but now I've gotten an expansion pack for it and the game works okay once after installation then will no open again and gives me an error.
"The application has crashed and will now terminate" I've tried absolutely everything (and making sure my games and applications meet the system requirements, and they do, running it in compatibility mode, updating my sims games which open for business update will not update after installing it once. It works if i install it immediately after I install OFB..but even then so, it crashes after one time playing the game!).......
I can receive messages, but none would sent. It was working fine for months, but after I moved to a new location I can send with the Windows Mail. I have 5 ssages in the Outbox and every tiem I send this erros msg. shows up: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm cross-posting because these 2 problems appeared at the same time (after installing a lot of Windows XP application software) and may be related. I am thinking of laboriously going back through a lot of restore points, but would prefer some insight as to exactly what happened. Windows Vista Ultimate on a Dell D830 with McAfee virus and e-mail protection. For the first week or so, neither problem was present.
(1) Windows Mail (winmail.exe) does not terminate its process when I exit. Thus I can't launch it again unless I either log out and log in again, or manually kill the process. Temporarily turning off McAfee e-mail scanning does not affect this.
(2) Whenever I delete anything from the desktop (whether my own desktop or the All Users desktop), Explorer hangs with a message like "Recycling 1 item...". I hit Cancel and the message box becomes unresponsive. I can still delete items from the desktop using Command Prompt and perhaps also in other ways.
I am having trouble downloading anything new onto my computer. And also when I open any program it always asks me what program to use to open it. I can download programs to my computer from the internet just fine but I cant open them because of the what program to use message I have to use everytime.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow do I completely block internet access for a program on Windows Vista? Is it possible? I have already tried creating a rule on the Firewall With Advanced Security for both inbound and outbound access using the "New Rule..." wizard. I choose "Program", next I choose the program's location, next I choose "Block the connection", then I check all three profiles and finally a name for the rule. I have created testing rules for both IE and Firefox but they could still access the internet (i.e, the webpages were still loading).
The columns on the firewall control panel show that the rules are enabled, the action is block and all other columns are "Any". I thought it would completely prevent the program from accessing the internet, but it doesn't. Could you guys give me a hand? Is there a way I could make a program to not see the internet (or any network for that matter) at all?
Whenever I go into windows mail a window pops up asking about my dial-up connection. It says select the service you want to connect to. There's nothing in the drop down box. When I go to settings... it says you are already connected to the internet - which I am. I'm on a wireless connection at home that works no problem but the mail program doesn't seem to detect any internet connection.

She has a link in the start menu that says (internet explorer 64 bit)
This is what she clicks to go on the internet, Now when she visits or clicks on links, she will sometimes get a message that she needs to install flash player.
She already has the latest flash player installed, but apparently this does not work on this "internet explorer 64 bit"
I diden't even know there was a 64 bit internet explorer.
And it goes on to say something like flash player is for 32 bit browsers, for flash player to work on 64 bit browsers search online for help, or it directs you to microsoft help and support.

so i thought i would just ask to see if there is one thing i could follow to fix this problem..
Internet explorer (7) won't run. I found that the IEXPLORER.exe is not in the directory. I have tried to install IE8 but it fails on configuring every time. Same happens when I try to install the cummulative IE7 updates (she's not good at installing updates). Everytime I try any kind of install or update concerned with IE it fails at the configuration phase. Other problems are that she can no longer use windows messenger. This connects but terminates in failure almost instantly.
I've ran a Norton Security scan which has found 144 tracking cookies but nothing more. The fix now button produces fail to lauch link which may well have something to do with the IE problem. Google Chrome is installed and works OK. I don't know what the last good restart point is. I've tried going into the repair feature on windows live essentials through the programs and features in the control panel but I just get a fatal error 0x8007007. Can't even look at internet options in control panel. That won't open either.
Interested to know how many people use IE7?
Looks like readability is very good in IE7 and my favorite font arial appears crisp and clear?
Just curious to hear a feedback on this?
Ive d/led the beta for IE8, dont know whether to insatll or not. What do ppl think of the new browser? What bugs have been encountered?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI noticed is that MS Internet Explorer, when started, returns and error pinpointing Google Toolbar then shuts down. What's the best way to repair or re-install MSIE? My understanding is that MSIE is integral to Vista so this could be at the root of some other problems, such as that the window that is supposed to open for "Default Applications" immediately shuts. Also, updates sit there waiting on the tool bar in spite of the fact that it is set to update automatically. When I click on the icon a window opens and shuts immediately.
I did a boot time scan with Avast! which generated an list of obscurely named files which it said were damaged and unreadable. They are all located folders which I guess would normally be hidden. I am wondering if these have anything to do with the registry and are therefore slowing things down as Vista struggles to rebuild. Another clue in that direction is that Ad-Aware hangs when trying to do the deep registry scan. If I skip that part of the scan it hangs during the file scan one or another obscurely named file. I have not yet correlated one these with the list generated by Avast!, maybe it will not be necessary if I can find another way to address these problems.
A friend has a new Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista. When she double clicks on the Internet Explorer icon (on the desktop), IE will open up for 2 seconds then disappear. In it's place are three small identical windows, with the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page", and also a small google search line. I'm not familiar with Vista or the IE that comes with it. So this may be normal behavior, but in my world (Win2000 and XP) you can always open up Internet Explorer even if it doesn't connect to the web. Can someone tell me if there is a way to open up IE so that it doesn't disappear as I described.

I selected a few add ons but only those shown and recommended within the IE8 tour. I do not have Google Tool Bar. Actually, everything seemed to be working fine and then later in the day I downloaded and installed History Killer Pro. I don't know if this could cause a problem or not. It's Vista compatible. It seems I can open IE8 and use it fine for the most part, but for instance, I used the snipping tool to make a screen shot snip and when I open that from my desktop where it was saved as a gif, IE closes every time.
