View 6 RepliesI read the tutorial about deleting windows.old, and that's simple enough, but I have a few questions. I reinstalled after the BitDefender 64-bit fiasco yesterday. It went OK, and I found all the saved files in windows.old which I was afraid I had lost. I was particularly concerned about my video and recorded TV files, so, when I found them intact, I "moved" them back to the appropriate "public" folders. Now Media Center sees them just fine. The weird thing, though, is that when I go into Windows Explorer, the files still "exist" in both the normal public folder and in the place I found them in windows.old.
Since I know that I didn't have enough disk space to duplicate them, the problem has to be a pointer or shortcut, but I'm at a loss as to how to get rid of it. I can, if need be, get another drive and copy them off, but I hesitate to just delete the windows.old folder without knowing if I'm going to also delete the files that are supposedly in the public video and recorded TV folders. Neither do I want to copy all those files off if I don't need to. Can someone explain this further, point me to another thread or tutorial that I missed, or tell me what will happen to my files?
On my C: drive I have a C:/windows.old directory as well as a C:/windows directory. The 'old' directory was last modified many months ago. C:/Windows takes up 9+GB/ C:/Windows.old takes up 14+GB. Can I safely delete 'Windows.old' from my PC?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just did a custom install of windows Vista and need to get rid of the windows.old file. I have an external hard drive and would like to move it there and not delete it just in case I have forgotten any files that are not immediately apparent. Can I just cut and paste it? Or will that mess something up in Vista.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've recently done a clean install of VISTA Ultimate on a new hard disk. This is an upgrade copy, so I used the "old" disk and ran it from there. Vista runs on the C drive now, but I can't free up space on the "old" D drive because I can't delete the Windows folder or any of the files or folders in it. I'm denied access. Tried the Administrator account trick. Tried everything. Disk clean up tool. This is my biggest complaint with running VISTA for the past year: I can't access my own computer because I'm told I don't have permission! I built them, I run a home network of 3 machines and I'm continually told I don't have permission to do what I want or need to do. UAC is off.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to copy/cut and paste (or even DELETE from desktop or wherever) (CTRL X, CTRL C, then CTRL V) or, even by right-clicking methods, I get the typical dialogue box: "Moving items...," "Deleting items...," etc.
The problem is that sometimes, only sometimes the documents move or are copied. Sometimes, (usually about 80% of the time) they do NOT. The dialogue box that states what's going on just freezes & hangs forever..............

If you need to delete or overwrite a system file in Windows Vista, you'll quickly notice that you cannot delete system files, even as administrator. This is because Windows Vista's system files are owned by the TrustedInstaller service by default, and Windows File Protection will keep them from being overwritten. You need to take ownership of the files, and then assign yourself rights to delete or modify the file. For this, we'll use the command line.
Open an administrator command prompt by typing cmd into the start menu search box, and hit the Ctrl+Shift+Enter key combination. To take ownership of the file, you'll need to use the takeown command. Here's an example: takeown /f C:WindowsSystem32en-USwinload.exe.mui That will give you ownership of the file, but you still have no rights to delete it. Now you can run the cacls command to give yourself full control rights to the file: cacls C:WindowsSystem32en-USwinload.exe.mui /G geek:F Note that my username is geek, so you will substitute your username there. At this point, you should be able to delete the file. If you still can't do so, you may need to reboot into Safe Mode and try it again. For the filename in the example, I was able to overwrite it without safe mode, but your mileage may vary.

But when I go to make it a non read-only file, I get the following message, "This is no longer located in the c:usersfavorites - verify the items and try again." Also I get this message "The system cannot find the file specified" ...I found this file in four other locations, and deleted them all. But still, I cannot get rid of it in the Favorites...

But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes. To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer. When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.............
1. Is it ok to delete windows.old to free up drive space?
2. I tried deleting it and in the recycling progress box thing, the file kept growing and growing. And when i select properties for Windows.old it too seems to be growing.
P.S. I did a custom install when I installed Home premium upgrade and I want to leave the past behind and start with a clean computer slate. I only have 77gb/225gb free. That's why I'm trying to delete it
Has anyone had problems with Windows Mail not working at all? It opens up and shows all my new and saved emails. After awhile I can no longer delete any emails. After yet another while, the entire thing goes blank and I can no longer see any of the emails much less send or receive any. I have contacted Dell three times and had them do remote troubleshooting, but it is still not functioning.
