This toshiba P205 laptop is running Vista 32. It has run for over 2 years, and recently the screen started to fail (or so it appeared). The screen will be grey, no cursor or anything, but the backlight works. I can plug into VGA monitor and operate the computer. I checked the screen connections and wiring, all good. It was an intermittent problem for about a month, and then it completely failed. I did a complete system recovery, and my screen was back. Worked fine for a couple days, and then on a reboot, it went grey again, and won't come back up. VGA output still works fine. Has anyone heard of something like this? The screen will not display anything, even the BIOS splash won't display, although I can change boot priority via F12 as it boots. I don't want to go through another day+ of recovery if I don't need to (2 years of updates takes some time). I don't know if this is something Toshiba will fix if I send it in, especially since the laptop is from 11/2007.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering if anyone else had experienced these annoying freezes that occur randomly in Vista 64. It can happen while I'm playing a game, it can happen while I'm browsing firefox etc. I freeze up about 4 times a day and the only solution is a hard restart.
It is beyond me, I have the video card drivers up to snuff, all updates are installed, virus scanners/spyware scanners, video card isn't overheating, CPU idles at 33 loads at 42. I'll describe the problem a little better other than to just say it's freezing. When the freeze occurs, the entire screen stops moving, I cannot move my mouse, all sound stops working, and if there was a sound playing, it will get mutilated into a nasty buzz.
I had my nice sleek black color scheme for aero..I turn it on and now it's the blueish gray..I have a black task bar, where all my programs are displayed, but every program that pops up has a bluish grey trim... I don't get it. And when I go to personalize > windows color and appearance. I don't have the normal palette for colors, I have the theme chooser like they did for XP.

Let it be known. This is for the FIRST game. Not the second. When I start the game this happens. I restarted, tried it again. Same Error. I uninstalled it. Restarted. Installed under Win XP Service Pack. Same Error. I made sure the exe is under the Win XP Service Pack. Same Error. I even tried the "change the mss32.dll in the directory." Same Error. I did the built-in system scan in the game configure. It's not the best but it should still play.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS M1710 notebook and just yesterday it started throwing bad fits at me. First of all, if I start my computer without an external monitor, the screen just blurrs completely and I have to shut it down. With the monitor, nothing happens, but I dont think its a laptop any more if it does this thing. That partially fixed, I too have the SVCHOST problem. I used the svchost analyzer and Security Task Manager, but all they show me is that I have around 7 Svchost processes and they only use 10-15% of CPU. Its very peculiar because I NEVER had this before and I have my laptop for around 3 years. Checked all instances, every svchost is in the Windows System folder, so I ruled out a svchost virus. However, even when I shut down almost everything else, still 90-100% CPU. I just cant understand it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Vista Home Basic. I installed one of my favorite star wars games(star wars addicted) everything went great. But when I run it gets fun: I get a black screen, I can see my cursor and hear the sound. But I don't see the menu And when I click on something it shuts down the game. I also tried to run it in compatibility mode but that doesn't work either. I also tried to change the resolution but that doesn't help anything.

And finally by "an error occurred for task reminders - username Error message the specified account name is not valid"
I think it is something to do with a task to register my vaio or take part in a survey but I cannot get rid. It is in task scheduler local and there is no delete. I found a similar situation on the vaio site but cannot find now.Found it http://club.vaio.sony.eu/clubvaio/gb...7&lastpage=yes

Got all the prereq installed. Then after waiting the 10-15, I acutally had dinner and came back started to d/l the SP. It got to 6% and stopped, sat there for a while and then failed with a code of 80070002. Click on the get help link and followed the instructions for clearing out the Software Distribution folder.
Then I checked for updates again. Did the same thing, stopped and failed at 6%. This time I clicked the 'Try Again' button. This time after hanging out for a while it went to 19%. But then it failed AGAIN! If I try again it just stays at 19%.
I figured that maybe the server is overwhelmed. It was 9pm EST or so. I tried again here at 5:15am figuring that most of the US is in a coma at this time. Same results.
Any ideas on how to get this SP? I'm plum out of ideas!
I'm down for anything, just to get this to work! Why did they have to change the way SP where handled? The d/l from a URL was just fine!

I am running Vista Home Premium x32 SP1 on a Dell XPS T8300@2.4 GHz. Whenever I try to run sfc /scannow it stops at either 39% or 69% ('Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation')and at the same time I get a pop-up message 'Windows modules installer stopped working and was closed'. I decided to run the sfc because yesterday morning I found my pc with a blue screen and the dreaded 'Windows has encountered a fatal error...' message. It booted successfully but I noticed several things (so far): all entries from System restore had disappeared, Windows updates had failed several times in the last 3 days trying to install Windows Vista SP2 (KB948465), and the 'uninstall/repair program' button in the control panel did not work (when I right-click over a highlighted program I only get two empty squares and no options). So I could not restore the system, could not update it and could not uninstall the most recent programs that might have caused the problem.
The next step was to do a repair install since I have the original Dell installation DVD for Vista SP1 but the upgrade was also unsuccessful - in the beginning of the installation I got a pop-up window with the message: setup.exe - Bad Image : C:Windowssystem32uniplat.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. I clicked 'Ok', the installation ran for about 1 1/2 hours and afterwards a message informed me that it was not successful and my system was being restored to its previous state.........

View 3 Replies View RelatedOver the past few days my Windows Explorer has begun to give me trouble. Stops responding several times a day. I've been through the Reliability and Performance Monitor and the Event Viewer and cannot find any specific correlation with installs or hw, sw changes. Most, but not all, of the errors seem to be related to ntdll.dll and encoders.dll. I can search for the specific error codes one by one, but since there are several, I thought there might be an easy way to check or re-install Explorer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedGreetings, I just formatted my new computer and when i try to play a dvd with WMP it loads the dvd and goes to a black screen and thinks for a moment, then a windows box pops up and says that WMP has stoped working,"we will look for a solution to this problem"
"This problem was caused by *NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller*,which was created by *NVidia*.
A newer version of this product is available that might solve this problem."
I believe that suggests that i reinstall my nvidia drivers, which i did, but it didnt work.
I have no codec packs installed either
Before the format everything worked perfect but i was having pop up problems and i think i had a virus of some sort.

I just got a new HP pavillion dv3 with vista home primium. But every time the computer went to sleep the clock and date stopped. I could not find out why, tried to remove sync with internet but nothing helped. But then we tried to correct the time and date ind bios and now it works Don't know why but it does. View 0 Replies View Relatedwith all the latest games I have bought (gta IV and mirror's edge) I get DEP errors. I tried to exclude them from DEP but my vista won't accept it. So now every ten minutes my games freeze up. What can I do about it? I've read some artikels about shutting of DEP completely. I'm wondering though what that will mean for my security. On some other forums it has been implied that the DEP errors have something to do with faulty hardware.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run Easy DVD Clone on a vista computer. The decryption happens through a DVD Fab software which transfers the video ts folders to a location that Easy DVD Clone can then read from. The initial process works fine and it transfers the files to a temp location but then when it tries to burn it to a DVD, the process stalls at 99% and right after I get the pop-up window stating "Easy DVD Clone has stopped working". This happens with all DVD's. Do you know why this maybe the case and if this a vista related issue? I have already disabled my virus protection software as someone has suggested somewhere that it may cause a problem and I also deleted some other dvd burning softwares that I had on there but the result is much the same.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using Vista Home Premium. I have a Brother 5170DN (direct network connection) that has been working fine with my older computers running earlier Windows versions. The trouble is that when the IP address of the printer changes, Vista is no longer able to print to it, so I end up having to reinstall. The reinstallation adds a new TCP/IP port into the driver, and then it works fine until the next time. Since my network is changing frequently right now, due to reconfiguration, this is a pain.
