Disk Defragmenter Will Not Automatically Run-- Ultimate
Feb 9, 2009
I can set when I want Disk Defragmenter to run and what partitions to defrag. And I check the box to run automatically and with that window either closed (okay) or left open and it indicating that the drives will be defraged NOTHING happens and when I open up the window it still says what time it will be defraged next even though that time has passed and it says NEVER for when it was last done. Any way to straighten this out? Since MS chose to make defraging progress an unknown I really don't like running it while attended--unless I just go off and do something else. Does _anyone_ ID this and know how to get it fixed?

Is it normal for Disk Defragmenter to Analyze the disk AFTER it defragments? I know it does it before and then I click 'Defrag Now' and it proceeds to defrag my hard drive. But today I was watching it and noticed that all of a sudden it stopped defragmenting and the info changed to 'Analyzing disk...'.

i am writing after i have just installed the new service pack 2 for windows vista and am just trying to suggest that with the disk defragmenter, as there isnt a lot that has been changed like the only things that have been changed are that you can now select volums to defrag. one thing that may help with this is to put a small graph (or GUI) similar to the windows xp one on it and maybe a timer if possible so that people know how long it is going to roughly be until it finishes, and a report message say as again in the previous version telling what amount of fragmentation there is and what files are fragmented. also another thing that i have noticed with vista is that it takes up a lot of memory and if possible would there be any chance of trying to make sure that vista uses less memory so that it can be more responsive. These sugestions are from over the internet that people would like to see

For some strange reason my disk defragmenter has stopped working! I run it as usual from the start menu, it requests permission to continue, which I give, and then nothing happens! I've done a search and several others seem to have this problem as well, but no one's provided a sollution!

One of my disappointments in Vista was lack of control over the defragmenting of individual disks/volumes and Microsoft must have been listening to someone! The Disk Defragmenter after SP1 now has a button to "Select Volumes" which can be used to select individual volumes for defragmenting or to remove disks from the automatic defragmenting schedule! I am very happy with that change. It probably was working fine before but I like having the control of my computer to deselect massive hard drives that contain media files transferred from other drives after recording and to only have my (C: system) and (G: recording drive) defragmented automatically.

disk defragmenter not running has been told it actually is running in the background, well mine isn't! I open disk defragmenter from the options menu and get the screen and it tells me that performance could be improved by defragmenting, so I click the defragment now button, select the drive I want defragmented and then okay. The screen says defragmenting for about 3 seconds (with the spinning wheel going) and then the prompt returns to what it originally said. I've looked in the system monitor and defrag is not running! What can I do to get disk defragmenter to run? I know I can install a third party defragmenter but that is only a way around the problem, not a solution for the problem.

I opened Select Volumes in Defragmenter as I only want it to run on my C:
drive and I found an extra "disk" listed.
I have, from the top,
(Select all disks)
Vista (C
Removable Disc (D
and then this, \?volume{bd14d1e-25b2-11dc-bf36-806e6f6e6963}
Can anyone tell me why I have this entry and what it means? Also, if it is a
"disk" where can I find it and see what it contains?

Disk defragmenter seems to only show options for *when* to defragment. How can I access options of *which* disks I can choose to defragment, and see information as to how fragmented they are initially, so as to determine whether I want to defragment them in the first place?

I am new to this forum, but need some advice on the disk defragmenter. I tried to defragment the disk last night and left it on all night. In the morning, the disk defragmenter 'still' says... this may take a few minutes to a few hours. The disk defragmenter is ususally on a schedule which is every wednesday, but I am beginning to think it has never been defragmented. How do I defragement the disk in this situation... and hopefully rectify the automatic scheduled defragementation.

I have an HP DV7 notebook that I recently added a second SATA 500 GB hard drive in the expansion bay. The purpose of the drive is to serve as a data drive. I also intend to store an image of my system disk on this internal expansion drive so that I can restore my system and apps when I am in the field. For most purposes the drive seems to be functioning normally. However, I recently noticed that, without my instructions, HP Updates were installing suipport files on my expansion disk rather than on my system disk and I have become concerned that Windows Updates may also end up on the expansion drive (so far they appear not to have done this). On further inspection in Computer Management - Disk Managment I discovered that when I put the expansion drive into the 2nd bay, my original system disk was automatically bumped from the Disk 0 position to the Disk 1 position and my expansion disk became the new Disk 0.
In Computer Managment - Disk Management the system currently looks like
Disk 0 - F: Expansion Drive - Healthy, Primary Partition
Disk 1 - C: - Healthy, System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump,Primary Partition.
If I physically pull out the F: drive from the machine the C: drive returns to the Disk 0 position. I am concerned that my system and application updates are going to get splattered across two drives when I want them to remain on the original C: drive. I can find no way in BIOS or Computer Management - Disk Management to assign the Disk and physically swapping the drives makes the system disk unbootable. Am I at risk of splattering my Window updates across two drives? Should I instruct Vista to regard my system disk C: as Disk 0 and how to I do this?

I used to have 3 USB disks (dynamic GPT) running fine under Vista Ultimate. Then I made a fresh Windows 7 Home Premium install. Noticing that it didn't recognise my disks (and other problems as well), I decided to go back to Vista Ultimate (using Windows.old).
But now the original Vista Ultimate installation didn't recognise them either! They have status Invalid in Disk Management Console. DISKPART sees the disks, and also the partitions, but it doesn't appear to find any volumes. Any command I try to do returns the error message that it is not allowed on invalid disk packs.

My friend just gave me his Vista Ultimate upgrade disk key to upgrade my vista home premium to ultimate version. Now, I have the key, but no upgrade disk. What I have however is a x86 Vista Ultimate disk, that I downloaded from microsoft MSDN website. From what I know, this disk is for a brand new and clean install of vista ultimate.
Can I use this disk to upgrade my home premium to ultimate. I certainly dont want to loose my programs/files on my current laptop, so I absolutely dont want a clean install, and am afraid to mess things up if I accidentally use wrong disk. So can I use the MSDN downloaded vista ultimate disk to perform the upgrade or should I buy a upgrade disk from somewhere?

Vista's defragmenter has been on my computer since Vista was installed, but recently I tried to defragment my drive, and got a message saying the program wasn't installed. I think the first time I noticed its absence was right after I replaced my hard drive. The instructions for installing it don't make any sense, looking more like XP instructions than Vista. how I can find and reinstall the Vista defragmenter?

Where is disc defrag? Can I find it with window explorer? Can I see, like I did with XP, a graph, what it's gonna do and see how the progress is going? or do I just have to watch the little ring going around and hope all is well with no idea if it will "take from a few minutes or a few hours"?

I ran a defragmenting session last night to clear up some space, and for some reason my C drive has dropped from 33.1 GB to 29.1. This has happened to me once before, but the other two recent defragments I've ran cleared up a ton of space. I honestly have no idea where the other three GBs have gone and I have not downloaded anything. I run a disk cleanup every night.

Last week I bought a new Acer Aspire 6350 w/ Vista - My 1st Vista machine. After uninstalling all the Acer bloatware, I open the GUI defragger, it analyzes C: for 2 secs (doesn't even mention analyzing the other 2 partitions) then it says "your file system performance can be improved". I defrag it the C:, it takes 45 mins or so and done. I go to my wife's Dell Vista laptop and go to the GUI defragger. It analyzes all 3 of her partitions. Weird, mine only analyzed C: for 2 secs. I then go back to my new Acer and run the GUI degragmenter again. After a 2 sec C: analysis it says "your file system......." again. Then when I go the command line defrag, run "defrag c: -a" it says I don't need to defrag. Bottom line is the GUI defragmenter doesn't work on this new laptop. It doesn't scan all partitions, when started it runs for a bit, then it just stops and it goes back to saying " your file system performance can be improved".

I bought an Acer Aspire 6530 last week. I noticed whenever I go to the GUI disk defragmenter (My Computer>Right click C:>Properties>Tools>Degfragmentation) that it ALWAYS says I need to defrag the drive even after I did did one. But when I do the command line defrag (Start>All Programs>Accessories, says I don't need to. This happens everytime even after I run the defragmenter. So why does
the GUI one says I need to while the command line one says I dont. Isnt the GUI and Command Line one basically the same?

I just reformated and noticed that it took Vista an average of 12 seconds for the boot screen to finish loading (I didn't count before or after that, just from when I see the green bar to when it finishes). After installing PerfectDisk 10 and doing an entire disk defragmentation, the time stayed about the same. But when I did a boot time defragment of my system files, the loading time for the boot screen actually increased to 40 seconds! I've rebooted about 5 times to measure the times and I've gotten up to 60 seconds as well!Has anyone else who uses PerfectDisk had similar experience? Did the boot time get better over time or did it stay the same? Also, in the program settings, it asks me whether I want PerfectDisk to manage my layout.ini file or if I want Windows to handle them; does anyone know which is preferred?

Purchased an HP notebook with premium and set it up but did not activate yet. Then purchased an Ultimate Upgrade with anytime upgrade. Installed the upgrade using the key from the bottom of the PC when it asked for the current product key. No errors. Finishes the upgrade and restarts and still is running Home Premium. Why did ultimate not take? We need ultimate to login to a domain.

I Have Windows Vista OEM 32 bit that came on my computer. I noticed that the full retail version of ultimate includes the 32 and 64 bit install. With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. I would like to try the 64 bit version but would also like to be able revert back to the 32 bit if the 64 bit doesn't work out. If I can't then the 32 bit version it is as I need to join a domain.........

I want to reformat my computer and install Vista Ultimate 64-bit as my operating system. I'd rather not spend a couple hundred dollars to do this when I already own Vista Ultimate 32-bit. My computer came with Home Premium and I purchased a Vista Ultimate Upgrade CD (32 bit). Now what I want to know is if I buy the $30 non liscensed Vista Ultimate (64 bit) CD, can I use my Ultimate (32 bit) Activation key to activate it? This would save me around $150. I talked to the Microsoft guys via chat but we just kept going around and around and they never really answered whether or not the Ultimate 64 bit would accept my Ultimate 32 bit upgrade key.

I am a relatively unexperienced windows vista user using windows home premium at 32 bit on an acer aspire 6920 notebook. I noticed that occassionaly my disk space would drop dramatically without me doing anything. 100s of mbs would just disappear for no reason, so probably being stupid i decided to run the disk fragmenter to try and fix the problem. BUT to my horror i was shocked to find that the disk fragmenter began to eat up my hard disk space big style. I went from 79.7GB to 72.5GB in just over an hour. What the hell happened and can it be fixed? can i get my disk space back? i thought the disk fragmenter was supposed to help your computer not rob it. does anyone else have this problem and can someone please help me? im kinda desparate, i cant believe it.
