View 4 RepliesThis was posted on Vista.general.discussion for a couple of days ago. I have an old system disk with XP which I moved to the E-drive when I installed Vista on a new disk. Everything of the OS on the old XP disk is deleted with the exception of this System Volume Information. I?ve taken the ownership and is now allowed to look into the folder. But no way of deleating it. No usable answer was given to the question other than moving my files to the C disk while formatting E. that might be the end solution. But does anybody know of a trick with or without editing the registry.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 198 GB HDD that has only ~3GB of space left. I cannot delete
any more data, i already did disk cleanup and deleted any non-critical
files. I did a disk analazyz and found that the system volume
information folder is taking up an enormous 89 GB of space that's almost
as large as the files I put on there (107GB). This is my server machine
(wndows server 2008) so there is not any system restore to reduce. Is
there anyway to safely reduce the space that this takes up.
A quick peak into the file tree shows that just one file takes up over
67 GB of space.
I'm also using Bitlocker on this and all drives.
I had Vista Ultimate x64 installed on my machines, and wanted to install the x86. But, when I tried to install the x86 after deleting the x64 version, I now get an error that says that "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation." I have reformatted the drive and all else that I can think of, but, it it continues to throw the error message. What should I do? I am sure that my system and hardware is sufficient to handle the Vista install, and I am trying to install to the same drive that I had the other installed to: Processor 2.00 gigahertz AMD 64 Opteron's (2 installed)
View 9 Replies View RelatedVista booted to the Desktop OK despite the new MoBo having a totally different chipset etc. However one problem niggles, if a CD/DVD is inserted any attempt at accessing the contents in Explorer locks up the system and I loose the Desktop, even Cntr+Alt+Delete doesn't work. On first boot Vista wanted me to activate due to the new hardware config so I did, with hindsight maybe I would have been better off doing a repair install, as I am now concerned a repair install will require activation this could be a problem with Microsoft maybe?. I have tried uninstalling DVD drive, IDE/SATA controllers and tested the DVD drive in another machine

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just recently done a full wipe of my hard-drive with Windows Vista x32 'Ultimate' on it and came across this issue in reguards of my 'RAM (Memory)' being lower than what it shows when I boot my computer up. I have 8gb RAM in which hasn't been tampered with, and ran fine before the reinstall of my OS took place and now, both System Information and Diaxlog show my RAM as *2302mb* which I am totally confused about :/ ere is my log from Diaxlog:......

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Ultimate running under VMWare 2.0.2 on a MacPro 10.5.7. I had to recover my c: drive due to some VMWare corruption issues. We can now see the drive, but when I try to boot from it I get "Missing Operating System". If I boot from the Vista Ultimate CD to do a repair, it does not see the OS and so won't do a repair.
Running a command prompt chkdsk c: says "The type of the file system is RAW" and it fails. dir c: gtives "The volume does not contain a recognized file system". Diskpart list partition shows "Partition 1 Primary 40 GB 1024 KB". Filesystem shows "UDF Allocation Unit size 2048". I tried booting from the Norton SystemWorks CD for their disk utility, but evidently the CD is not bootable.
I noticed a big discrepancy between C drive used space and the files I actually have on C drive ex programs, windows , users etc. Those files add up to approx 32.5G. whereas the C drive info indicated that I haves used up around 67G out of 400G. I assume the rest must be Restore points etc. However when I click on properties of the System Vol Info folder I see 0 Bytes. When I use the command VSSadmin I see that 34.5G out of 55G is used.
Why can't I see the size of the System Volume Folder in Windows Explorer even though I am an administrator? Is there something I must do to give myself the appropriate privileges? I believe I should be able to view the size of the System Vol Info file because I can do so on my laptop which is also running Vista?
the Volume Icon was gone from my system tray. Does anybody know of a way to get it back?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't get them back either by checking them in the Start Menu Properties as they are both grayed-out or by rebooting. I still have network & internet access and sound. Vista Ultimate SP1 x86.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNo sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Vista a while back, on a system pretty much formatted this way:
partition 1: linux
partition 2: XP
partition 3: linux swap
partition 4: extended {
partition 5: linux home
partition 6: linux usr
partition 7: Vista
This worked fine. Perfectly, in fact, and I was really pleased with how smooth the Vista install went. I noticed that Vista installed its bootloader on partition 2. Since I was going to trash XP at some point, I figured I would cross this bridge when I got to it. I got to that bridge last night. It was time to install a different flavour of linux, and trash XP. But nothing's ever easy... I reinstalled linux so that things look more like:.........
I have looked around this forum about CD problems, but no thread corresponds to my problem. I have Vista Ultimate x64. My DVD is TSST CDDVDW SH-223F ATA. I have a problem to read a contents of CDs. I can see DVDs, but CDs not. These CDs are originals from software producers and magazines. Under Win XP I have no problem to read all medias.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn Windows XP, I could search for a word in some text files. How can I do that in Vista?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt just doesn't work.
I have a simple text file with a certain word in it.
I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it.
Windows 2000 finds it within a second.
I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc
etc
It just doesn't work.
Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in
windows2000?
when I try to download anything to my computer, I get this message: C:UsersCraftApp DataLocalTemp and it also says that it could not be saved because you (me) cannot change the contents. (I am the admin on my computer, so why can't change it?)
I also want to know what program can permanently get rid of programs after I already uninstalled them, because they seem to be leaving a trail behind on my computer and I think that is what is causing this message. Also, If you can tell me what program there is for windows vista home premium SP2 64-bit.
I noticed this problem after installing SP2; anyone else having this problem?

View 6 Replies View Related64-bit Vista Home Premium. I just tried to view the contents of the Vista clipboard and discovered that I couldn't do it. I did some research and read that a few people got around this by copying clipbrd.exe from their XP system and dropping it into Vista's system32 folder, but there were apparently issues in so doing. Is there any way I can view the clipboard contents?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a new PC with Vista and MS Mail. The old PC was XP with Outlook Express. Are there any special considerations in moving everything over from OE to MS Mail? Or is it the same as it would be when copying to OE on a different PC? I'm concerned with messages/folders, contacts, and rules.
View 6 Replies View RelatedUsing Windows Mail which was working fine this morning. Installed the recommended MS updates this afternoon, WM started running very slowly (taking 3-5 seconds to change message when clicked) now every e-mail and newsgroup message shows name and subject, but the content is completely blank. I can open them up, and the content is stored as an attachment, eg AT000223.html AT000223.txt, which I then have to save (if I click either attachment, I get "file not found" error), then I can open it up and read the mail. I have read and tried the fixes where I changed the "read messages in plain text" option, and the encoding options, still the same. I've done the maintenance on the folders, I've also emptied the temporary Internet files as a forum, still nothing.
