View 9 RepliesDoes Windows Vista new search engine search within files contents. I have many Word files .doc on an external hard drive that is indexed for search. I would like to find files containing certain words. Don't understand "contents" search option.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have encountered a very strange problem. I have downloaded two exe files recently. When I doubleclick on the exe file, instead of the application installing, what should happen but Word of all things opens with, in the case of one of them a box headed 'File Conversion - arw5setup.msi', and a similar wording in the second, asking me to select the encoding that makes my document readable. Whatever I select, the exe file then opens as a text file.
(The reference to an msi file is baffling as both files were exe files.) When it happened the first time I thought it was a corrupt file, but when it happened again it has to be that there is something wrong with my system. Is this a virus? Spybot has just come up with a clean slate ...
how to stop people deleting files unintentionally from my laptop or server at work. I want open access for read and copy only for everyone but i need it to be impossible to overwrite or delete these files. I can give a read only tag ok but can't seem to set a higher security for deletions without running password blocks etc. Are passwords the only method of avoiding deletions?

In Tools, Settings, Advanced I have eBooks and eNews library location set to C:Program FilesMobipocket.comMobipocket ReaderLibrary, and I have downloaded My Bookshelf contents there. I can't see this folder or its contents in Windows Explorer, and I can't cd to it or dir its contents in command prompt running as administrator, but yet all of the eBooks that I have downloaded to this location are working normally. What is happening? I'd like to manually back up these files to a cd. How do I do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt just doesn't work.
I have a simple text file with a certain word in it.
I try to find this text file, but vista won't find it.
Windows 2000 finds it within a second.
I have tried all available options.
"include non-indexed"
"always search file names and contents"
"find partial matches"
"include subfolders"
etc
etc
It just doesn't work.
Why is there not a simple search function that actually works like in
windows2000?
when I try to download anything to my computer, I get this message: C:UsersCraftApp DataLocalTemp and it also says that it could not be saved because you (me) cannot change the contents. (I am the admin on my computer, so why can't change it?)
I also want to know what program can permanently get rid of programs after I already uninstalled them, because they seem to be leaving a trail behind on my computer and I think that is what is causing this message. Also, If you can tell me what program there is for windows vista home premium SP2 64-bit.
I noticed this problem after installing SP2; anyone else having this problem?
View 5 Replies View Related64-bit Vista Home Premium. I just tried to view the contents of the Vista clipboard and discovered that I couldn't do it. I did some research and read that a few people got around this by copying clipbrd.exe from their XP system and dropping it into Vista's system32 folder, but there were apparently issues in so doing. Is there any way I can view the clipboard contents?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a new PC with Vista and MS Mail. The old PC was XP with Outlook Express. Are there any special considerations in moving everything over from OE to MS Mail? View 6 Replies View RelatedVista booted to the Desktop OK despite the new MoBo having a totally different chipset etc. However one problem niggles, if a CD/DVD is inserted any attempt at accessing the contents in Explorer locks up the system and I loose the Desktop, even Cntr+Alt+Delete doesn't work. On first boot Vista wanted me to activate due to the new hardware config so I did, with hindsight maybe I would have been better off doing a repair install, as I am now concerned a repair install will require activation this could be a problem with Microsoft maybe?. I have tried uninstalling DVD drive, IDE/SATA controllers and tested the DVD drive in another machine
View 8 Replies View RelatedUsing Windows Mail which was working fine this morning. Installed the recommended MS updates this afternoon, WM started running very slowly (taking 3-5 seconds to change message when clicked) now every e-mail and newsgroup message shows name and subject, but the content is completely blank. I can open them up, and the content is stored as an attachment, eg AT000223.html AT000223.txt, which I then have to save (if I click either attachment, I get "file not found" error), then I can open it up and read the mail. I have read and tried the fixes where I changed the "read messages in plain text" option, and the encoding options, still the same. I've done the maintenance on the folders, I've also emptied the temporary Internet files as a forum, still nothing.
View 4 Replies View Relatedafter shrinking the D: partition, the drive letters and actual partition sequence on the drive changed - the C: (Vista) partition has switched places with the D: (Recovery) partition in Disk Management (D: is now in front of C I first defragged the D: drive using JKDefrag and used its built in feature to move all the files to the end of that partition, so that after splitting D:, the blank portion would be next to the C: partition (so I could have it merge with C: ) how do I get the partitions back to their normal positions (in Disk Mgmt)? and if I delete the D: partition, will it merges with C: and keep my Vista install harmed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor some reason Vista now does not show any previews of pictures; pictures saved on my desktop are now only shown as icons and not the picture, same goes for every folder in the computer and for video files as well.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently switched from an XP machine to a Vista machine (yes, I am an old newbie). I retained most of my programs. However, they do not behave the same. In particular, under XP if I did a Ctrl-Click on a link (e.g., table of contents page in MS Word) I would be moved to the link target.
However, under Vista I get the message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effecxt on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Since I am the system administrator, and only user, on this machine, this doesn't he;[ much. I assume it has something to do with some security setting in Vista but have been unable to figure out where or how to "fix" it.
what the recovery disc that keeps filling up on my new dell vista is for? when i try to access its contents it appears empty.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am not sure what is going on, but I think it may be an over-aggressive registry cleaner. I am running Vista Ultimate 64 and every time I get an open file dialog box, and try to open the menu at the top of it to select the way I want to view the folder contents (List, Details, Thumbnails, etc.) the button stays depressed and after a few seconds I get the Server Busy... Switch To | Retry | Cancel... dialog. The Cancel button is always grayed out. The list always comes up eventually, after several hundred Retry clicks... If I do not move the mouse I do not get the Server Busy dialog, but it takes 30-45 seconds for the list to appear. After that everything works fine. I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ @ 2.6GHz with 3GB RAM and an nVidia GTS8600.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just got a new HP Vista Home Premium computer. My old XP Media Center computer with all my programs and files - I don't have that many pictures and no movies etc. - held about 25GB of stuff (both Defraggler and Norton Ghost indicated that 25GB was the size of the entire contents of the C: drive).
My Vista Home Premium computer, with all my programs and applications transferred over from the XP machine, has drive contents of a whopping 100GB(!) according to Defraggler. However, the Norton Ghost backup file of the C: drive is under 25GB in size. Both the XP and the Vista computer are on NTFS file systems. What can be bloating up this new Vista machine? I've looked around with Power Desk Pro 7 and don't see much. DeCrapifier doesn't identify anything obvious.
Using Windows Vista Home Premium. When I look at the contents of folders, the contents are sometimes listed as a single list. Sometimes the list is divided into sections: A-H, I-P, Q-Z.
I deleted my recent E-mail contents from the folder Recent E-mail. So i lost my mails from outlook 2003 also. How can i recover tha mails.
