My HP PC is only a few months old with little or no problems. My Windows Mail has worked just fine until recently. All of a sudden out of nowhere this little window pops up wanting my userid & password. I can put it in all day long, but it will not accept it nor will it go away. I can no longer get my emails & with our small business this is a nightmare that won't end.
View 9 RepliesSP1 causes a cycle of connects and disconnects on my wired network connection. Problem disappears when I uninstall SP1 but reappears when I reapply SP1. My connection is through an Intel Pro/1000 CT chipset on an ASUS P4C800-E motherboard going to a Netgear WGR614 v7 router. Problem remains even if I uninstall my Avast antivirus software. Just using Vista's native firewall. The network icon in the system tray cycles through a yellow warning sign going on and off. I've tried the repair connection option in Vista but it doesn't find any problem. I uninstalled the driver for the card hoping a reinstall would rebuild and fix the problem but it made no difference. I'm using Microsoft's drivers for the NIC chipset. I power cycled the router but that made no difference. But as I said, uninstalling sp1 restores a normal network connection. An ipconfig when the connection is good shows an IP in proper range for the DHCP from my router. At the disconnect, yellow warning sign, it shows no IP. I've attached entries from the system log that illustrates what happens in a reconnect cycle. I deleted the XML event data for brevity but can add it to this thread if it's necessary.

How stable is Windows Live Mail? Does it convert your old Windows Mail messages and keep storing messages on your computer, or only online? And what about Contacts? Is there something good to read to read about moving from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail? The material at is pretty superficial.

(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. Tried changing by accessing Properties from Windows Mail but when I change to "Make this the defalut e-mail handler, apply and save then exit and return to Properties the setting has returned to Not the default e-mail handler.

Note:
Control panel does show Windows mail as being the Default Newsgroup handler.

Starting about 2 weeks ago, I can't open attachments in Windows Mail. Message says "command failed to execute" I have been reading the posts and still don't know what to do. How do I know if IE8 has been installed as an update? I'm inexperienced with technical stuff. I don't think I installed it, could it have installed on it's own as an update?
