Chips Challenge: System File Missing

May 27, 2009

I Have a DOS game 'Chips Challenge' and i want to run it on Vista x86. But, when i try to run it, it says "C:WindowsSystem32AUTOEXEC.NT. This Required system file is missing. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." I try googling it and found program called 'DOSBox'. I installed it and follow the instruction to mount, etc. When i run CHIPS.EXE (the executable file for that game) on DOSBox, it says 'This Program Requires Microsoft Windows'.

The Next Challenge: X64 Crashes When Running With 4 Gig Of RAM

Jul 1, 2008

Firstly, thanks for all of the help and assistance with the installation questions. Here's the next problem :

My system does not want to run with 4 gigs of RAM. Since upgrading to the 64 bit version of Vista, I have not been able to get it to run using more than 2 gigs. When the full 4 gigs are installed, it will stall during the load up process, or only operate for a few minutes before locking up, which will then need a manual restart/reboot.

Just to rule out the possibility of a bad stick of memory, I have swapped the four sticks out/around, ran the memory test, and everything comes out fine. However, when the full load of 4 gigs is installed, the same thing happens - system crash. I've also installed all of the latest drivers and BIOS, but this seems to have no effect either.

Now, I'm not sure if this is a Vista problem, motherboard/RAM incompatibility issue, or what? I have consulted the motherboard manual to see if I could learn anything about the situation, but it's mostly incomprehensible to my non-techie brain.

NVidia 8700/8800/9600/9800 Chips Are Failing Across The Board

Aug 17, 2008

Nvidia losing money over defective GPUs. by Justin Mann on August 13, 2008, 12:00 PM Nvidia’s recent struggles with GPU manufacturing are definitely taking its toll on the company. As a result of manufacturing defects and the inevitable fallout from it, it seems that Nvidia has gone from enjoying a few beautiful years on top to actually losing money recently. In particular, Nvidia saw a decrease in revenue for the second quarter of this year, resulting in a financial loss for the company.

In total, they lost over $120 million, and recent cuts in sales haven’t helped them out either. They outright admitted that they underestimated AMD, but nobody can really blame them for that. Yesterday, it was speculated that there were manufacturing defects in the G92 and G94 chipsets, on top of the already known bad parts in the G84 and G86 series. Nvidia may have tried to avoid blame here and there, but ultimately it is coming down on them and they have been stuck with warranty replacements galore. Even if the newer chipsets are fine, it doesn't do anything to remedy the mass amounts of defective ones already sold..........

"Windows Failed To Load Because A File Is Missing Or Corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221

Oct 15, 2009

when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

System Fat16 File System Recovery Won't Work

I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

ICS Across XP And Missing File

May 31, 2008

I have setup a small home network with a desktop running XP SP2, a Shuttle Media Centre running Vista and network printer. Both PC can access the printer and can transfer files across. Using the LAN portion of a D-Link ADSL router for the interconnection but no ADSL connected. The XP PC has a 56k Dial-up which I am trying to share with the Vista machine. I believe I have done the set-up on both sides properly, IP addresses check out, workgroup checks out, have firewalls up on both with Norton Anti-Virus on the XP end, indeed can see a "residential gateway" on the Vista PC. Howver, when I try to connect to the internet from the Vista PC, nothing happens on the XP PC (no dial out). Even when I connect on the XP PC, no internet traffic flowing to the Vista PC. Should this work? What am I missing?

Missing Pagefile.sys File

where programs will randomly stop responding. First stop: Pagefile.sys. However, while the OS is on C:, can't locate a c:pagefile.sys.

Some background:
1. Yes, hidden files are set to show in Folder Options.
2. Did a search for the file (including non-indexed locations) and can't find it.
3. Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is selected. C:[OS], System managed is displayed.

Is it possible that I don't have a pagefile.sys? Could that be why my system is hanging periodically?

Games Missing .exe File

Jun 24, 2008

I recently purchased a laptop from Gateway, and although the Games folder is in the start menu...that folder has the icons for the games, but all the icons are the generic type, and if i click on ANY of them, i get an error message that says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." ok, BUT I have only the one account on this computer, and of course its an Admin account. Next, i went to Control Panel/Programs and Feature/Turn Windows features on or off...The box for GAMES is checked, and when i open up to see the subfeatures...ALL games are checked...

Next, i went to C:/program files/microsoft games lo and behold, the folders for all the games are there, and the .exe/.dll/ and subfolder with the .mui is ALL THERE...when i try to dubclick on the .exe directly, i get the same message that i did when clicking the shortcut in Startbar (see above) just what the heck can i do to restore those .exe files back into proper working order? I find it hard to believe that only the games files are corrupted...but is there some solution that you could provide me...i have exhausted my attempts to try and find them via the internet (for download)...but since the files ARE on my system..there "should" be a way to fix this weird problem...

UAC - File Virtualization (VirtualStore Missing)

Mar 30, 2008

I???m currently troubleshooting a problem with UAC - File Virtualization in Vista SP1. File Virtualization is not working in Vista and is breaking some applications that previously tested good. The difference with this build is that the C:User folder has now been relocated to the D:User. It now seems that Vista is not creating the VirtualStore Folder & and respective sub-folders under %LocalAppData% (which is pointing to the correct path on D:). I???m wondering if Virtualization has some known problems if the User Data folders have been relocated, and if theres something I can do.

File Missing And Home Prem CRASH!

Feb 25, 2008

Installed Hitman game. When I attempted to start game, receieved error that a file was missing. From my memory, it was something like MSVLL771.dll (not accurate, but close). Vista prompted me that it could find the problem and then recommended a download. It was an update in the realm of Framework 1.1- something or other. After downloading and attempted implementation, Vista let me know this program was already on my PC. I did an internet search for the "missing" file and downloaded it specificly and placed in the game's file. The game now ran with no problem.

Yet, at the next boot up of PC it crashed to the "problem" screen. At this point I was able to use safe mode and attempt a recovery by going back to an earlier save point. Did this and reboot. Now PC crashes again and now will not start in any mode (safe, normal, safe with networking, etc) By not start, I mean I get past the prompt asking which mode to start, screen goes blank, no Vista load, just a cursor. The LED light seems to be processing, yet nothing happens from here. I placed Vista disk in to boot from it to Fix and Re-install, but this does not help. After a few steps it goes to a driver selection screen with no drivers available. Lets me browse, but I have no clue where to look for these?

Missing The Old File, Edit, View Menu Bar?

Aug 1, 2005

One of the main concepts of Windows Vista is to make things more simple, basically take some of the complexity out of Windows. The decision was made to do away with the old menu bar in many of the windows of Windows Vista because they simply looked too busy and offered the user too many, often confusing, choices.

This all sounds great but we are power users and most of us like complexity because it gives us more control. Thankfully, Microsoft didn't really do away with it completely, they just hid it. The next time you are using Windows Vista and wish that old menu bar was still around, just hit ALT on your keyboard and it magically appear!
