Allowing Trusted Programs Through UAC

Mar 23, 2008

Is there a way to allow a trusted program through the user account control without asking for permission every time? I log into my laptop as an administrator and there is one program that needs consent through the user account control in order to run.

The program is Cisco Clean Access Agent. The geek squad at my school installed it so I can log onto the school's wireless network with my laptop.

This program is initiated through the Start Menu | Startup folder. I can't see why this shouldn't be possible because there are about 10 other programs starting when I log on (including some from the startup menu), and the Cisco app is the only one asking for permission.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium as my OS.

I have a program that I use daily.

How do I now get the program to be a 'known' and 'trusted' program?

Cabinet File Cannot Be Trusted

Mar 23, 2008

I recently bought an aspire 5310 which runs in vista basic and so far it has been nothing but a headache.Simple tasks on XP like file transfer between pc and pen drive are laboured,eg the download clock runs up instead of down and a 458mb transfer ran for 30 minutes.Program downloads such as Divert X take an age to download and then when it comes to finalize a message pops up on the screen, not for many of us mere mortals eg.' a cabinet file cannot be trusted, please verify Cryptological services are enabled so cabinet cert can be verified'Now this program downloaded in mins on XP without incident and what it means I have no idea.My facebook hasnt run properly since installed on this pc, vids sent to me etc will not open.I installed the Div X program and when I tried to use it, again another unintelligble message popped up on the screen. Is it me? my pc? or is Vista such a nightmare?

Not Allowing Any Software Installation

Oct 22, 2009

I try to install to my computer stalls at the start of the actual installation (I can select where I want the files to go and agree to t & c's etc). I bought the computer new about 3 months ago, I will have to find out the specs, I'm not too computer savvy. It's really p*ssing me off, as I can't install anything... On top of that, the CD/Bluray drive keeps asking me what it wants me to burn to any disc I put in it...

Internet Not Work After Allowing Updates

Jun 17, 2008

I wonder if anyone could advise whether the following updates would affect my internet connection:? Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [June 2008] (KB905866)Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.35.347.0)Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2008 (KB890830) Security Update for Windows Vista (KB951376) Security Update for Windows Vista (KB950762) Update for Windows Vista (KB947562) Security Update for Windows Vista (KB951698) Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB950126)

I downloaded these yesterday and I have had problems with my wired modem and Netgear router today. I keep losing the internet connection. I've spoken to my ISP and Netgear. Netgear says that the modem keeps dropping the connection but my ISP says there are no problems at their end. It just seems odd that everything was working fine before I allowed these updates.

Not Allowing You To Delete/rename Certain Files

Jul 29, 2009

Are there certain files crucial to Vista, that you are not allowed to delete/move/rename?

If so, would explorer.exe be one of them?

I had an incident where I tried to create a desktop shortcut forWindows Explorer. I don't know why but the shortcut had ".exe" at theend. When I tried to rename it, it warned me about something, as if Iwas renaming the actual program and not just a shortcut.

I usually make a shortcut for a program by dragging the name from the Start menu to the desktop. Then it will have the name of the program with no .exe.

The desktop no longer does that. Of late it goes to all my websites puts in the name and password and even the "remember me" is checked, but it does not do the actual log in. I HATE DAT!

Same no matter IE or FF. Cookies are turned on, I just spend an hour going through every Mcafee setting to compare... And I have fiddled with VISTA everywhere I can think of but just cant figure it out...

Power Management No Longer Allowing Me To Change Display Brightnes

Apr 17, 2008

I'm on a Toshiba Satellite that's worked fairly well except for a few self-repaired hiccups. However, about a week ago my power management plans suddenly stopped working. I can switch from different plans that change how quickly my display turns off, but my screen has been stuck at the lowest brightness possible for a while now. It has nothing to do with the plans themselves, I've restored all to their default settings and still no change in brightness when I switch between all of them. The little slider to adjust
brightness simply does not appear anymore. I can't find what exactly it is that's malfunctioning to reinstall, as no power management driver appeared on my disk from Toshiba. Can anyone provide an explanation or perhaps a link to repair this?

In Vista, when I need to add software manually, I'm unsure whether to place it in Programs, or Programs X86. A local retailer tells me that Windows 7 doesn't have the programs divided into these two sections, and doesn't know what 'X86' means. I've looked through the contents of both and can't discern a pattern that offers any clues. What's this about?

Will Not Run Any Programs

Nov 27, 2008

I was wondering if anyone knows what is wrong with my laptop.. Recently my roommates and I got Left 4 Dead, and while playing it would constantly crash to my desktop. It wasn't that big a deal because I could just get back on, but when I shut my computer off, it seemed to have corrupted something, as now I can't do anything on it. One of my roommates had the same thing, where after a restart his screen was messed up, but he was able to clear the problem by installing new graphics drivers. I uninstalled mine and reinstalled new ones, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried it again, but I couldn't get on the internet to get new drivers, so it's using the crappy basic ones. I don't know if this is the right place, and you probably need more info, so feel free to ask me more....I have tried to run a chkdsk, but it will not run at startup (just goes straight to logon). I have been following tutorials around this site, but to no avail. I think I'll give it a few hours then try again and check back here,

If I click an icon on my desktop default programs pops up and I have to find the right program to open the programs with. I was reading some other posts and saw one that suggested that I download PC Medkit, I did it and it did not work. So now I'm out $40 and my computer still isn't functioning properly. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

IP Email Sent To Programs

Jun 5, 2008

My IP which is Windstream (formerly Alltel) is where I 'go' to 1st check my email so that I 'use THEIR servers' protection to weed out virus, etc.; Windstream says once I 'open' the program, it immediately 'dumps' it into my email program. However, it is sending it to IncrediMail (and NOT to Microsoft Office Outlook 2007). Do I HAVE to 'uninstall' "IncrediMail"? I like some of its 'features', but it gets slow. The 'gold pearl' button that 'shows up in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is gone...so apparently I do NOT get my email 'dumped' there and I think I'd rather have it there. Using VISTA Business on a 64x2 dual core processor w/3GB of memory. This is getting 'old' and my 'contacts' and/or address book is NOT the same in any of the 3 email programs and I can't seem to get 'information' from one to another. What am I doing wrong?

Run DBase III Programs In A 32-bit?

May 7, 2009

I recently had someone load VMware Workstation 6 on my new Dell desktop, which uses a Vista 64-bit platform. I now have the capability to run a Vista 32-bit platform by clicking on a desktop icon (situated on the 64-bit platform). I need occasionally to run dBase III programs in a 32-bit environment, which obviously a 64-bit environment will not tolerate. I connect to the Internet on a wireless basis, using a RangeMax Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter. This Internet connection works fine on the 64-bit platform. In the 32-bit environment, I am able to make a local network connection, but I am not able to connect to the Internet. When in Windows Explorer (32-bit platform), I do not see any USB ports enabled. The individual who installed the VMware said that I should not need a USB port in the 32-bit setup to connect to the Internet. Has anyone had any experience using VMware and establishing Internet connections from other than the base platform?

Running 32 Bit Programs In 64 Bit?

May 8, 2009

I am considering a purchase of a new PC running Windows Vista 64 bit. I have some questions.

Will some of my 32 bit programs run on Vista 64 bit? I am thinking about Firefox 3 and Thunderbird 2 especially. Does Vista 64 have a compatibility mode where I can run 32 bit applications? If yes, does the compatibility mode actually work?

I am planning on some multimedia work recording music and video. I know that I need a second hard drive. One for the OS and one to record to. The model of PC that I am considering has a RAID configuration using two hard drives. How would these drives appear to me in Vista 64 bit? As one drive? As two? If it is one drive, can I set a partition to have the two drives I need? If so, are partitions difficult to setup?

What are your opinions on the 64 bit system? Is this the future and eventually everything will be going 64 bit, or will it fade out as a good idea that never happened? The PC I am looking at is expensive and I wish to know if it will be useful for a long time.

Is Vista 64 going to be the current OS and more and more companies will be supporting it? Is Vista going to be around for a long time? I am seeing buzz about Windows 7. When would Windows 7 be out and would it require 64 bit?
