Why System Extremly Slow?
Apr 16, 2006
My system is extremly slow and programs ,web pages not responding at all. I just had a problem with not being able to connect with the internet, my provider said i was getting a connection and it must be with my drivers ?
I tried to fix it and made it worse, i had to do a system recovery, ( i know i know silly) nothing else i could do.

I started loading my games onto it. Insert the CD, and Winamp would hiccup. Then, when it actually starts installing whatever game I try, Winamp plays at half speed, pops and hiccups, and becomes unlistenable. Firefox takes between 10 and 30 seconds to load an instance, and typing is slow, and shows up on screen in bursts. Furthermore, even my System sounds (right clicking, for example) become slow and broken.

One of the most common XP topic concerns shut-down or power-down issues. The solution can be as simple as going into Power Options in Control Panel and changing the "When I Press The Power Button" setting to: "shut down" or so complex that it simply can't be identified. Sometimes it's a third party product causing a reboot at Shutdown (ie, Roxio CD 5.0 - and there is a fix). Unquestionably, one of the best sites for coverage of this topic is at AUMHA.ORG. I have taken the liberty of pasting the comprehensive information they provide below. Please take the time to locate your specific problem and read their suggested fix. If you still have questions, then by all means post them in the General Questions Forum.

I have a PCG-FRV31 Sony Vaio Laptop that belongs to year 2003. I was happy using it with my Windows xp until one day its hard disk found some serious problems and I bought a very cheap, but new hard disk(160 GB, IDE). I came home happy and installed my new HDD and windows again, but when I tried to use my laptop it turns out that file operation(copy, cut, move, deletion) is really really slow. And when for example, I try to open my My computer my mouse freezes for few seconds until the window pops up.

My system is running very slow, it takes a long time to load windows or open any programs such as internet explorer, or change websites. I have deleted all the temp files, but even just opening start menu or any program takes forever. I have just recently installed mcfee not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Running Windows XP and the Celeron processor regularly jumps to 100% usage for no apparent reason. The system then slows down to become almost inoperable. I have replaced the mother board, doubled the RAM, wiped clean the Hard Disk and reloaded all software the problem still exists. Is it possible that the CPU fails such that it cannot cope with the load, but continues to operate inefficiently, or is the failure mode of a CPU such that it will not operate totally?

My system used to run games like UT3 and Oblivion real slick and fast. But for the past few months now it runs them real slow. I have no viruses and I have defraged a million times. I just can't seem to find out what the problem is. I have freed up a tona space on my rig, too. i have used tons of tricks to speed the computer back up, like using msconfig and disabling certain services. This is what worrys me though, I never used 2 get these: So like wtf is going down.

Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank

Having a major problem with svchost.exe. Everytime I restart the computer an instance of svchost.exe uses a new PID and takes up 95-100% of cpu. I have to find the instance and then "end the process" to use the computer. I have scanned with PCtools antivirus, PCtools spyware, AVG antivirus, Pctools maestro, registry booster 2. All spyware and malware have been removed according to those programs. Registry has been cleaned, defragged and compressed. Still have the same problem.

i have a computer running windows xp sp1. it has p4 1.7 cpu and 1g ddr sdram memory.recently i noticed that the computer was very slow in opening up programs or some other simple operations. i have norton anti virus running all the time, so it should not be virus. i also scanned the system using adaware and every thing seemed ok.so i am just wondering if it could be the memory, as i am using two memory with different speed, one 512 at 2100, and the other at 2700.

Over the last 2 days, my instance of XP has become extremely slow, essentially unusable. However, when I check the resource manager, CPU utilization is at 1%. I'm not sure what gives, as this happened all of a sudden.Startup takes about 15-20 minutes. Safe mode makes some difference in the execution times, but it is still very slow even in safe mode. For example, it takes approximately 10 minutes to load up the system restore utility. I can get into a command prompt okay and work the file system from there, but that's about all that works quickly. I noticed that there was an automatic update that occurred a day or two ago, since then I think it's been ridiculously slow to use the machine.

Also I have had the computer crash and had to do use xp recovery console and chkdsk to recovery the operating system twice. There are five separate users who can log on as administer and change the settings but do I have to run the scans and edits in each user account or do the changes cover the whole of the accounts.

I work with 8 identical PCs at work and at home, they all have same Win XP Pro (bulk license), 6 update automatically, 2 have never been updated. This 2 un-updated, still work fast, (as if windows was freshlly installed) the other 6, keep getting slower, & sluggish. In 4 of them Windows was reinstalled 2 and 3 times; and the remaining 2 became ultra-slow.Software and use is the same on all of them.(office work) No additional software downloaded or installed in any.Should I forget about the "risks" of not updating and reinstall and use the no update option???

my computer has been operating very slowly lately, and my computer protection software (Defender Pro 5 in 1) detected an apparently infected driver. The notification said that the driver was infected by an email virus and it recommended deleting the driver. Thinking that it couldn't cause much harm, I took the recommendation and deleted the driver. The next time I started my computer, it seemed to boot normally: it showed the normal XP home edition loading screen, then it showed the blue screen of death! The screen said something like "autocheck.exe not found. Skipping autocheck."
