Hi everyone. I have a Dell 4700 running Windows XP Pro w/ 2GB RAM installed. I run a Penitium 4 (3.4 GHZ, I believe), Nvidea 6600 Graphics Card, Creative Live! 24-Bit Internal sound, Printer, Broadband Internet. I also have 2 user accounts set up (which sometimes run simultaneously) and run alot of the normal programs including Panda Internet Security, Microsoft Office and The Sims2 w/ all expansions (HUGE Memory Hog). My Question is- With these specs, what amount of space should I alot to the Virtual Memory to on my C: Drive? Windows recommended amount or should I increase it some (mainly due to the Sims2? I want a quick boot up of course, but also all the least load and stall time possible. I'm kinda new to this so please be specific.

Using internet and 1st time I've received the following pop up - "Registry Cleaner Recommended" with an exclamation mark in side a yellow triangle. It says:"Errors in your Windows registry database, if present, could cause erratic operation and other computer problems, including: Slow system performance, slow start up, freezes/system crashes.Details: to ensure system is operatingly correctly, strongly recommend you scan and clean your Windows registry database by running Registry Cleaner now"May sound silly but this is ad-ware right? Shouldn't Ad-Aware and Avast prevent pop ups like these? Or is there a program that i should download to prevent these?

I Have a 2yr old Dell Dimension 4550 with win xp, pentium 2.4g processor, 256meg ram, 60gig hd, cd burner,& dvd rom. It got to a point it would take 20 min. to boot up, then run at a snails pace. I ran spybot, adaware, and McAfee virus scan and no change. I ran hijack this and found no problems there. I installed new hd and ide cable and fresh install of xp and no change. from there I changed out the ram and no change. I disconected all the cd, dvd, floppy, removed the modem, sound card, reinstalled xp with no drivers for the cards, still no change. At this point I replaced the power supply, removed from another running computer. Each time I made a change I checked in task manager and found the CPU usage to be 20 to 30% with no programs running. the tasks that are consuming the CPU are the taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe. at this point I even upgraded the bios and still no change. Does anyone have any other ideas.

I would like to create a script of some sort that can be run by a regular user and that can reduce the sound acceleration like in the Sound tab of dxdiag. An older game my kids run needs lower acceleration to function properly. A second script to reset it would be helpful too. I don't want to give my kids admin priv or have to set it myself before and after each gaming session.

Can anyone give me the steps to reduce all the clutter I have on my PC down to ONE edition of Windows XP (Prof) and get rid of all the other stuff? The situation on one of my computers (my wife's) is that there are several (3 anyway) editions/installations of WinXP Home on this computer and, if left to boot up on its own will go to the top one on the list, which is NOT the edition required, and of course it asks for Activation and all that stuff, which, when the correct edition is loaded, is not necessary. I would like to eliminate all but the second edition noted, safely and permanently. How do I go about this safely?

I officially give up my stubborn dogged quest to learn, comprehend, and apply everything I should know about what's running on my PC - what each process does, what program(s) it/they originate in, what other services depend upon them, or whether or not I'll be able to brush my teeth if it/they isn't/aren't running. I don't want to know that rolling back a certain driver or manually installing a .dll file will enable some non-essential process to convert anti-aliased vector lines to maximized battery life, or how some helper file will allow QuickTime to covertly play the contents of Huge Jackman's iPod on my Fisher Price boom box. I concede that I'm incapable of grasping neither the logic (if there is any) nor the specifics relative to the phenomena that is computer science.

I went through several pages of 100% CPU usage threads but did come across anything that seemed relevant to this particular problem.
I am attempting to help my Pastors Dell notebook. It is running XP.
His wife said that it locks up when she tries to access the Internet.
They have two accounts set up on it.
After bringing it home to see if I could figure it out I immediately noticed that her account (Sylvia) was extremely slow. I started Task Manager and it showed that CPU usage was at a constant 100% with the only foreground process being Task Manager.
The other account (Ted) was the original account and when logging on to it the CPU usage is about 5% or so (with an occasional momentary spike of up to about 50%) with the only foreground process being the Task Manager.
I set up an account, James, and with no customization done to this account and only the Task Manager running in the foreground the CPU is at a constant 100%.
The roess Explorer log from both Ted and James is here: http://luannsplace.com/James/Computer/ProcessExplorerResults.html
A system inventory using Belarc Advisor is here:
I used Windows Update and it said that all necessary updates were in place.
If anyone could steer me in the right direction to get this problem corrected we would greatly appreciate it.
What is puzzling is that the 100% CPU usage is only on accounts created after the original account (Ted) was created.

I've never been overly impressed with the speed but over the months it has got slower and slower and is now virtually unusable unless you've got hours to waste.
It takes forever to load up, forever to open a program and forever to complete a task. Ask it to open two programs and you can just forget it.

I have 500 megs of RAM and each of my 6 logical drives indicate that the
system has allocated 785 megs to the pagefile. That is huge. I can't
imagine why any drive would need that much, and since I am runing out of
space on some drives I would like to drastically reduce the size of the
files - maybe to 300 megs. Would that be OK, or would it be unadvisable.

My computer's been experiencing loss of power whenever I use a program that requires the CD-ROM. It doesn't crash right away - I can run the program for 20-30 minutes before the computer loses power. The screen goes black, the fan disengages, and the whole thing simply shuts down immediately. The crash seems to be just a loss of power, as the system log doesn't record any errors and when I press the power button on the computer after a crash, Windows XP Pro starts up normally.
I've tried replacing the external power cable but it didn't solve the problem. CHKDSK doesn't find any errors on the drive and it's a relatively new hard drive, about 2 months old. My antivirus, which is up-to-date, can't find any viruses either. I'm sure it's a hardware problem, but what part is faulty? Could a power connector to the CD-ROM cause the entire computer to crash, even?
