View 17 Replies View RelatedI have 500 megs of RAM and each of my 6 logical drives indicate that the
system has allocated 785 megs to the pagefile. That is huge. I can't
imagine why any drive would need that much, and since I am runing out of
space on some drives I would like to drastically reduce the size of the
files - maybe to 300 megs. Would that be OK, or would it be unadvisable.
i feel so stupid having to ask this question when there are so many others on this site with real problems, but here goes, i just bought a new computer running XP, and have no idea how to change the size of the icons on the desktop, i have very few icons on the desktop now, but they are BIG, and cannot find where to go to adjust them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWe recently purchased a 22" widescreen Samsung EX2220 LCD monitor. Unfortunately the icons and labels on thedesktop and the teston the toolbars, taskbars, drop down menus are too small. I've changed the setting several times (Control Panel -display-Appearance-"Font Size" and all the "advanced" settings.) By doing this the fonts and text gets larger. However, every time we re-boot, all the settings go back to the way they were small. Does anyone know how to keep they large after a reboot?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled Windows for my sister, who is visually impaired. I just installed Windows XP Pro. Just finished it, and then handed it over to her, to customize her settings. Since she has bad vision, she usually lowers the resolution down to 800x600 and has the font size and title bar sizes larger. Well as soon as I left her alone with her computer, she messed up the windows or icon settings so bad, so everything is HUGE. Everything is so huge, that (what should be) small menus now fill the whole screen. We can't get to the part of the preferences window to change the resolution to something higher, and we can't get to anywhere (that we know of) to change anything back to something resembling normal. Basically, we can't do anything anymore.I know I can reinstall Windows XP all over again, but since I JUST DID THAT I'd like to avoid having to do it all over again. Is there some way to reset the preferences, without having to reinstall the whole operating system for something so seemingly idiotic?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI Have a 2yr old Dell Dimension 4550 with win xp, pentium 2.4g processor, 256meg ram, 60gig hd, cd burner,& dvd rom. It got to a point it would take 20 min. to boot up, then run at a snails pace. I ran spybot, adaware, and McAfee virus scan and no change. I ran hijack this and found no problems there. I installed new hd and ide cable and fresh install of xp and no change. from there I changed out the ram and no change. I disconected all the cd, dvd, floppy, removed the modem, sound card, reinstalled xp with no drivers for the cards, still no change. At this point I replaced the power supply, removed from another running computer. Each time I made a change I checked in task manager and found the CPU usage to be 20 to 30% with no programs running. the tasks that are consuming the CPU are the taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe. at this point I even upgraded the bios and still no change. Does anyone have any other ideas.

Can anyone give me the steps to reduce all the clutter I have on my PC down to ONE edition of Windows XP (Prof) and get rid of all the other stuff? The situation on one of my computers (my wife's) is that there are several (3 anyway) editions/installations of WinXP Home on this computer and, if left to boot up on its own will go to the top one on the list, which is NOT the edition required, and of course it asks for Activation and all that stuff, which, when the correct edition is loaded, is not necessary. I would like to eliminate all but the second edition noted, safely and permanently. How do I go about this safely?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI officially give up my stubborn dogged quest to learn, comprehend, and apply everything I should know about what's running on my PC - what each process does, what program(s) it/they originate in, what other services depend upon them, or whether or not I'll be able to brush my teeth if it/they isn't/aren't running. I don't want to know that rolling back a certain driver or manually installing a .dll file will enable some non-essential process to convert anti-aliased vector lines to maximized battery life, or how some helper file will allow QuickTime to covertly play the contents of Huge Jackman's iPod on my Fisher Price boom box. I concede that I'm incapable of grasping neither the logic (if there is any) nor the specifics relative to the phenomena that is computer science.
