Sep 7, 2006Why is it that the majority of the time spent booting up is reported as idle time when tracing the boot process with Bootvis? Is it possible to reduce or eliminate this idle time?

View 6 RepliesI have a win xp comp
1100MHZ
256RAM
It takes 2mins 20secs to load up which is really annoying.
I need to know a good software o something i can do with my computer so my boot time reduces.
How can I reduce my long boot up time (5 minutes) for a workstation running on Win XP.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to create a GPO to lock a user's workstation after 15 minutes of inactivity, and force a log off after say 4 hours of inactivity. I figured out how to do both independent of each other, but can't figure out how to enforce both at the same time.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy pc is getting slower. this is something that has been going on for ages. from when i first turn on the pc it takes about five minutes before everything is loaded and ready to use. then when i click something on the desktop it takes about another 40-60 seconds before any thing happens. this applies to online and offline things. whilst using my pc it is slow opening pages etc. often the cpu is at 100%. i have spybot s&d, avg anti virus, zone alarm firewall, lavasoft ad-aware, easy cleaner, cclener, disk keeper pro, avast anti virus, i have checked that i have the latest bios. my processor is a p4 2.6ghz. i have 1024mb ram. any suggestions what i need to do.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI went through several pages of 100% CPU usage threads but did come across anything that seemed relevant to this particular problem.
I am attempting to help my Pastors Dell notebook. It is running XP.
His wife said that it locks up when she tries to access the Internet.
They have two accounts set up on it.
After bringing it home to see if I could figure it out I immediately noticed that her account (Sylvia) was extremely slow. I started Task Manager and it showed that CPU usage was at a constant 100% with the only foreground process being Task Manager.
The other account (Ted) was the original account and when logging on to it the CPU usage is about 5% or so (with an occasional momentary spike of up to about 50%) with the only foreground process being the Task Manager.
I set up an account, James, and with no customization done to this account and only the Task Manager running in the foreground the CPU is at a constant 100%.
The roess Explorer log from both Ted and James is here: http://luannsplace.com/James/Computer/ProcessExplorerResults.html
A system inventory using Belarc Advisor is here:
I used Windows Update and it said that all necessary updates were in place.
If anyone could steer me in the right direction to get this problem corrected we would greatly appreciate it.
What is puzzling is that the 100% CPU usage is only on accounts created after the original account (Ted) was created.
I've never been overly impressed with the speed but over the months it has got slower and slower and is now virtually unusable unless you've got hours to waste.
It takes forever to load up, forever to open a program and forever to complete a task. Ask it to open two programs and you can just forget it.
About 2 months ago I had to replace the hard drive. It was a WD40 gig. I chose a Seagate PATA160 gig. It works good but since that time it takes a long time to boot up. Would a new, larger drive need more memory. I didn't add anything else.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was looking in my task manager and I have 40 processes running. Out of those 40, the process with the highest use of CPU is the 'System Idle Process' which hovers around the 95-100 range. What is it, and do I need it running?

View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter I change a setting or install an application that needs a restart, i click yes restart my computer now, and it'll shut down windows, show the bios screen, then when windows should boot, it just sits there, screen black and nothing changes for ever. If I hit the restart button, and let it get to the windows boot screen, it tells me windows shut down improperly and asks me how i want to boot, safe mode/last working config/regularly. I choose any of them and it starts up windows fine. What could be causing this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedRight, everything else works just fine on this computer, including loads of games, new and old, programs systerm etc.I have had problems with the Raptor drive but have had a replacement sent and installed ok I'm trying to run Need For Speed : Most Wanted : Black Edition.I can play just fine for anything from 15 minutes to 1 1/2 hours then the sound loops, the display goes blank and the PC shuts off.I have re-installed windows, defragged the drives (took days), re-installed drivers, swapped hardware, played in 2000, 98, NT modes, turned off SLI (turned it back on again) just about everything i can think of.I have loads of other games but it's really frustrating me that i can't play this without it crashing the system.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe computer uses XP home and is set for automatic updates.Every time I switch off it says it is installing update 1 of 1 even if I have not been connected to the net. When I tried using manual update I was told that the installation of <Windows Installer 3.1> had failed. Is the computer trying to install this same thing every time?If it is how do I get it to install properly or remove it from the list of programs ready to be installed?I think that when I installed the drivers for the motherboard this installer, or an earlier version, was installed by the Intel download.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI Have a 2yr old Dell Dimension 4550 with win xp, pentium 2.4g processor, 256meg ram, 60gig hd, cd burner,& dvd rom. It got to a point it would take 20 min. to boot up, then run at a snails pace. I ran spybot, adaware, and McAfee virus scan and no change. I ran hijack this and found no problems there. I installed new hd and ide cable and fresh install of xp and no change. from there I changed out the ram and no change. I disconected all the cd, dvd, floppy, removed the modem, sound card, reinstalled xp with no drivers for the cards, still no change. At this point I replaced the power supply, removed from another running computer. Each time I made a change I checked in task manager and found the CPU usage to be 20 to 30% with no programs running. the tasks that are consuming the CPU are the taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe. at this point I even upgraded the bios and still no change. Does anyone have any other ideas.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn setting up my first home network, I decided to update to XP. My new computer had SP Home preinstalled and I bought and installed XP Pro SP2 on my older computer. I lost my way somehow in installing XP Pro on my older computer and in frustration tried to overwrite the first install with a new one. Unfortuantely, that didn't work and resulted in two versions of XP being active. On boot-up I was presented with a choice of "Windows XP Professional" or "Windows XP Professional". Despite the identical nomenclature, the first one in the boot sequence was my original attempt at XP and the second in the sequence was my second XP installation with which I had hoped to overwrite the first I decided to go into the Documents and Settings section (and anywhere else that seemed logical) of XP and delete any references that I could find to the first installation of XP.

View 3 Replies View RelatedCan anyone give me the steps to reduce all the clutter I have on my PC down to ONE edition of Windows XP (Prof) and get rid of all the other stuff? The situation on one of my computers (my wife's) is that there are several (3 anyway) editions/installations of WinXP Home on this computer and, if left to boot up on its own will go to the top one on the list, which is NOT the edition required, and of course it asks for Activation and all that stuff, which, when the correct edition is loaded, is not necessary. I would like to eliminate all but the second edition noted, safely and permanently. How do I go about this safely?

I tried a few things one was editing the boot.ini file, except stupid me forgot to save a backup so it is ruined.
