View 8 RepliesI've been trying to help a friend who has a computer that is horribly infested with virus and malware. My friend had no recovery partition or any type of Windows CD. After downloading and running Spybot and Avira Antivirus the computer began to run much better. Everytime the computer would startup, Avira found a virus called "Winlogin.exe". I tried the "Quarantine" option but it kept popping up. Eventually I just clicked "Rename". Now when starting the computer it loads the Bios and goes to the XP boot screen - and then restarts - over and over and over. I've tried booting in safe mode - same thing.

When i restarted my computer it was running at a constant 50% cpu usage.went to task manager and saw one of my svchost.exe running at 50%. I closed it out then my cpu restarted on its own. When I got back on its still running at 50%. I tried scanning for virus and malware but it showed up as nothing. I used avast and malwarebytes.

I originally lost my windows "luna" themes and it reverted back to classic themes only
at this point it would not let me change the theme without giving me a much dreaded error message for even highlighting the new theme rightclickdesktop -> properties -> appearance I can no longer change the selected theme as the box and drop down is "greyed out" and locked for some reason However, i can change the color and font and effects and advanced. Unfortunately, without an external program like Tuneup Utilities 2009 i can not change my theme back to XP's Luna theme from classic any other way of my knowledge. So i have to run that program every time i restart if i want my theme back every time i get on my pc.
when out of no where, I received those weird progams on my PC which are those fake Virus scanners and such. i then deleted it from the source, and ran my Nortan scan and my spysweeper, and they found nothing wrong with my pc. Now, the PC will NOT let me go to "important" sites. For example, Bank of America, Paypal, anti-virus sites, Ebay, etc. But will let me go to sites like Myspace or forums. I had my favs on my toolbar as tiles so its easier to access them, i had about 10 of them, and now only 5 remain after the whole thing happened, and the 5 that were removed were "important" sites. Almost every thing on my tool bar was removed, including File, Edit, View, Tools, and such. My search engine is still displayed though.

Yesterday, I clicked on the volume control icon and it said it couldn't do anything because we didn't have an audio driver! It just worked the day before! Then the icon disappeared. The audio is gray in the sound control panel, so we can't do a thing. We have the Windows XP CD, but I don't want to mess with anything, especially after having it reinstalled a short while ago. Is there a place I can download a new driver for this system?

I ran scans from Norton 360 and SuperAntiSpyware and other online scanning sites but I could not locate the malware. I paid a Symantec consultant to remove the infection from my system and he says it is clean. In the meantime, because my computer would randomly shut down and I was afraid that it would not recover, I reformatted my hard drive and re-installed all my programs. My computer does not recognize my video card and I have put in countless drivers to repair it with no success. Although my computer is more responsive and stable I am still plagued with random shutdowns from time to time. It sounds like you would hit the enter key and it would stick and continually click until I get a blue screen.

We have XP running on an AOpen model computer. It's an Intel Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM and a Radeon X700 series video card. We've been having some trouble these past few days with the computer just randomly restarting for no reason. At first my father was having the trouble, but I didn't believe him. So I decided to sit down a little while ago to confirm what he told me.He initially told me the restart happened as he was burning a CD, but then after a restart he burnt like four of them in a row with no difficulty. So then he said it has occured while playing music. So I tested it out, played a song on Windows Media Player, and then tried to play a second one. Boom, instant restart.Now, as I said I was looking elsewhere. I do have the "auto restart" thing disabled, and I do not get a blue screen of death. As for cleaning the computer? Way ahead of you on that one. Prior to me sitting down to test the music thing, I unplugged everything in my computer and opened it up.

The hour glass just shows up on the screen and then goes away without anything opening. I tried a system restore by my computer will not let me restart except a hard restart and then the System restore errors out because of the hard restart. Im not sure if this is a windows problem or a virus problem. I have stopzilla and spy bot as well as adaware.
