Uninstalling A Program - Asks For "installer.msi"
Apr 26, 2008
Every time I try to uninstall any program, Windows XP tells me that I need the installation package ("installer.msi" or "programname.msi"). I searched on my hard drive, and can't find any of these .msi files. This seems very dumb. I have been able to search on the internet and find some of the .msi files that I need. When I find the right one, XP accepts it and uninstalls the program.

I have finally decided that my problems with uninstalling are related to the Windows Installer being corrupt.I reregistered this in Safe Mode but it didn't fix the problem. So I ran SFC but when it asked to insert the CD which I did, I got a message "The CD you have provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the Windows XP Professional Cd-ROM..."I only have the one CD - it came with the computer and is " Windows XP Professional includes Service Pack 2."

When I double click -or select 'open'- HDD D: I get asked "Choose a program to open this file", with a list of programs displayed. This happens only in my computer - opening it from within an app, or from the drop down list of the address bar works fine. Now, 'explorer.exe' is not in the list, and also since the "always use the selected program..." option is grayed out, it doesn't help to manually navigate to explorer.exe & select it.

I am running XP Pro on a laptop loaded with programs and files. When I recently started it up, instead of loading with the familiar Compaq logo, it started in a DOS program (Phoenix BIOS) with a warning
that "it had not been shut down correctly last time." I think I did shut it down correctly last time. The BIOS offered me two options. 1) Hit F1 to Boot or 2) Hit F10 to continue. I hit F10. That took me to a screen where I had to guess what to choose. Did I want to Save and Exit? Did I want to Escape and abandon changes? etc. I didn't know what to do but it seems I had not made any changes so I said "abandon changes and boot

I was uninstalling a prog that had a trojan in it. I deleted the registry keys and such;manuelling removing it because the Explorer.exe would shut down every time I tried to do it the old fasion way Wink So, I was going through, and I accidentally deleted the Uninstall registry key Which has led all the installed progs to not show up in the Add/Remove Programs gui that's in Control Panel. And so, I am wondering if I have to wait until tommorow to do this, when I have the windows cd. Or if I'm able to just do some other recovery.I restarted and held down F8, and did the "Last known good configuration" thing, but it said I had to replace hal.dll.

i am on an XP operating system on a dell. everytime one of the users logs off, we get the window that says "ending program sprtcmd.exe", and then we have to go and end program manually every time we log off. i read a similar post on here where someone was having that problem, and was told it was related to the dell support center, and they were advised to uninstall it. i tried to uninstall the dell support center, and this message pops up: "Error 1306. Another application has exclusive access to the file c:/Documents and settingsBarbLocal SettingsApplication DataSupport SoftDell Support CenterBarbstate logssprtcmd.log.
Please shut down all other applications then click Retry"
It will not let me click retry, i have to close out the little window or hit cancel, then it goes through a little more of the "windows configuring", and then i get a little window for "add or remove programs" that says "fatal error during installation" and then that's that. it won't let me uninstall the program! i know this isn't a major problem or anything, but still having to manually click that window everytime i log off is quite aggrivating.

The day I uninstalled IconPackager, this probelm comes out.. because one by one, my icons are going corrupted, they're going blank. I'll attach and image on this post so you'll see what my icons look like.First, the ".txt" and ".jpg" files are the only blank icons, and now, there's some icons on the control panel that are going blank, "Scheduled Tasks", "Printers and Faxes", "Network Connections", "Fonts", and "Administrative Tools".

Tried to open Control Panel to uninstall and start using Office XP Small Business -- message: "error occurred while windows was working with...CoPM.cpl in System 32." Microsoft tech suport referred me to start/run appwiz, and remove Visual IP InSight -- but that file wasn't on the list of programs. I removed an un-named installer from the top of the list, thinking that was the culprit.Since then, Windows Installer dialog box pops up whenever I open Explorer or any other program. Microsoft tech support referred me to Article 261594 (Modify the Registry). Can now load Ofice 2000 without the installer popping up.

So I had XP Home and had one user "Quinn". I upgraded to XP Pro and for some reason, I was now prompted with a popup log in (similar to the one most people have and that I have at work) asking for a password for a user "Matthew". I don't recall setting up this user (my name) and had no password, but if I hit OK I was logged in with no problems.I looked into the User Accounts and saw that Quinn was still the administrator and that Matthew was a user. So I figured I'd keep it simple and got rid of Matthew since , well, I was Quinn and had no password for that account either. Now, when I boot up, I get a prompt for Matthew but by entering no password, I can't get in. The same happens when I try with Quinn. So after all of that here's where I'm at: I need to find a way to get into my computer and bypass the logins since I don't have passwords for wither account.

Keep in mind:I have no access to reboot with the original motherboard(fried) I have 4 Legal copies of XP on 4 computers (including the fried one) I have lost the disk and the XP serial number for that machine. I still have 2 OEM and one Upgrade XP disks So Eventually I am going to have to deal with the serial number issue I think (hope not) System 7 is not an option I need to fix this now and I do not want and illegal copy of the beta

Every time I start my computer, the Cakewalk Pro Audio Setup appears, and says that Microsoft DirectShow 5 has been installed on my system. Then it needs to reboot to continue the installation. This is all fine except that after reboot it would show me the same prompt all over again. Is there any way to stop this from happening? (I don't want to install Cakewalk anymore). I'm starting up Outlook 2003 for the first time on my son's computer we put a new hard drive into, the old HD is hooked up through USB to an external HD case. When Outlook starts it asks for a location of the .pst file and I direct it to the external HD (F drive) thinking it will automatically import the old 85 meg pst file so we can save all the old emails, contacts etc. Unfortunately what it did was create a new where I directed it deleting the old .pst file completely, AARRGGHH, My question is, is there any way to recover all the lost files? I checked the recycle bin, no luck and am currently doing a search of the (external) F drive looking for the file.

I am trying to do what so many others prefer...install XP on a new notebook with Vista. I have had some problems thanks to the SATA controller driver. Even the bios has no option to turn the off the controller which has worked for me. So I slipstreamed the driver that seemed to be the one (read on another site) and started the install. Got to where the install asks to specify the RAID type/brand. I select what I think is the one (HP) and then a screen comes up which reads "please insert Windows XP Professional Setup Disk #4 into your CD ROM drive and press Enter when ready". I know of floppy number four, but this is asking for CD number four?

I installed a second version of Windows XP on my computer. If memory serves, I installed it on the same directory as my original operating system. I uninstalled it shortly thereafter however, every time I boot up, the computer asks me which copy of XP I want to use. This despite the fact that I have since totally reinstalled windows and even replaced the physical hard drive. How can I get it to stop asking for an operating system that no longer exists?
