View 2 Repliesso, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE! i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots? i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.
i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present (by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won't let me turn it on again). the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don't work either (i have to access them via software route).
I have a small program, written in VB2005, with the standard splash screen provided from VB. When I have the program available through a share directory. I can't run it on another computer. Both computer running Windows XP. It comes up with this error: "Application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by security policy. To grant this application the required permission, contact your system administrator, or use the Microsoft .NET Framework Configuration tool.If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI use winchat.exe in the "C:WINDOWSsystem32" folder to talk with two other computers on my network. Against my better judgement I have installed SP2 on one machine as an experiment and am already sorry for doing it. First..the firewall is completely off. When you dial from the computer with SP2 installed the other 2 do not respond, they did before. When the other 2 computers dial the computer with SP2 installed it will not respond, it did before. If I cannot use this feature now because of this SP2 is there a way to uninstall this nightmare?

We have an intranet set-up, and I would like to get onto the internet, just to watch videos or check e-mail during the slow hours. It will display the intranet, the webpage for the company itself (the public webpage), the testing site for our recruitment testing, and thats it.It gives me a message as if you attempted to access google from home, but unplugged the ethernet cable. Today I accessed a site I run through angelfire through ftp.angelfire.com, and it displayed the contents of my server, but I can't see the photos or anything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI posted this here because I assume it has more to do with my actual computer setup than anything else, but I apologize if I am mistaken.I am currently running WinXP SP2.I have this problem in that quite often when running my bittorrent client (Azureus), I just lose connection with my router and I cannot regain connection uintil I reboot the router...even rebooting the comuter doesn't seem to do the trick. This happens with certain trackers more than others, but only with bittorrent, and not even at extreme upload or download speeds. I can be uploading at 20kb/s and downloading at even less and lose it, when at other times I can be uploading files to web host at 200kb/s without problems.

Right-click databases -> Restore Database
I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).

XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

1) Reset ie7 as per MS

My sister has given me her used laptop, telling me if I can make it work, it's all mine. The problem is, it never fully loads the desktop. You can't click anything or do anything else. She has lost her XP disk so I can't restore the system. I tried booting up in Safe Mode, but it still freezes on the desktop I am completely clueless on what to do. Is there any software available that could boot from a disk and do something?

View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently I have noticed that my PC has been loading things really slowly. When I start my computer, there is a black screen with a loading bar at the bottom, which takes atleast five minutes to load. When I launch a game, it takes ages for it to start up and it also takes ages to join a server. I tried reformating, but it didn't help. When I was installing one of my games, I found that it took about 10 times as long to install. And while it was installing, I couldn't do anything else because it slowed everything down. It's like my RAM has been lowered or something. I am guessing it may be a hardware problem.
