I am a computer enthusiast and I assemble my own PCs. I wanted to know how to brand the PC with custom System Manufacturer and System Model settings. I am aware of the OEMINFO.ini file but that only changes information in the Computer properties page when you right-click 'My Computer' and choose properties. But when you use dxdiag, the System Manufacturer and System Model read "To be filled by O.E.M".Could anyone please tell me how to go about changing these settings ? Changing the OEMINFO.ini file does not affect these values.OEM manufacturers like Dell, Sony have changed the settings on their products, so I'm sure it's possible.

Recently the machine was really running slowly and of course all the pre-installed demo applications were way beyond their expiration date so when she asked for my help, I opted for a complete HDD format and recovery installation with her original Toshiba recovery CD.Programs were still on the HDD, but All shortcut icons were gone from the desktop Keyboard and language settings had returned to original English Firefox reverted to its initial first-access home page Apps like McAffee's site advisor disappeared completely requiring reinstallation and, upon starting Open Office, it reinitiated its registration sequence I set a System Restore Point. However once again after I rebooted everything had rolled back and even my attempt to restore the machine to the point I'd set failed

I am about to purchase a laptop and if there is anything I've learned over the years, it's that these companies like to cram laptops with useless software, most of which expires after a certain amount of time thus making it even more useless. What I would like to do after purchasing the laptop is completely format the hard drive and then install my own copy of Windows along with software that I do use. If anything ever goes wrong however, the originally installed version of Windows along with the manufacturer's software / utilities will most likely be needed for warranty. So my question is about how to make a perfect copy of the hard drive before formatting it. I have Partition Magic which has an option called "Copy Partition" which I imagine is what I am looking for, but I would like to make sure I don't do anything wrong.
Would I install Partition Magic, make a hidden partition that is large enough for the currently installed version of Windows and the extra "bundled" software, and then copy Windows and the software to it? After which I would then format the rest of the hard drive and then install my own version of Windows there. If anything ever goes wrong, I would format the partition I was working with and copy the hidden partition back to it. Is this the correct thing to do, and if so is there anything else I should be aware of before doing this. For example, will the original version of windows still function correctly if I ever did have to restore it? I always hear about people doing this and I assume this is what they do.

I need to do a System Recovery to restore my system back to its factory settings (I'm using WinXP Home). When I hit F10 upon startup in order to access the system recovery, nothing happens- it boots as it would regularly. I was able to boot up using the CD, and am now in the System Recovery console. Might anyone tell me what I need to do to perform a non-destructive, or even a destrucitve system recovery?

I recently had to install XP on a michine that came with an in built ethernet card. I need to find out what ethernet card it is, so that I can install the relevant drivers to get it to work. I've tried to do some detective work to find out what ethernet card I to find the corresponding drivers. All I can come up with is from the Packard Bell website (the company from which the machine came). The only details I could find for the ethernet connection are something that says: LAN 10/100 (marvell 88E8039)

I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.

I'm running Windows XP SP3 with everything up to date as far as I know. I have the complete set of my PC's OEM Disks that I've used once when my OS was completely messed up, had Geeks Rescue out and they couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I know what they are for. What I'm not understanding are the several tools I'm afraid to open listed in my "Start"/"All Programs" I have both "Compaq"/"Compaq Presario PC Tools" with "Compaq Application Recovery"/"Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator"/"Compaq Recovery Tools CD"/"Compaq Support Information"/"Compaq System Recovery"/"Remote Assistance"/"Safety and Comfort Guide"

I just recently upgraded my laptop to 2 gigs of ram. And it is working fine. What I was wondering is if there is a setting somewhere, to force windows to use as much of my ram as possible, before ever using the swap file? The reason I say this, is even though I now have so much Ram, windows is STILL swapping stuff out to my swap file.

What are the best settings for System Restore? I am running Windows XP and the minimum is 200mb and the maximum is 8478mb .. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I read somewhere that the highest setting on SR eats a lot of memory and I dont have that much (512) I am getting virtual low minimum memory messages. (I have this set at min 768 and max 1024) So would turning the setting down on SR work with increasing my virtual memory?

I have talked to HP tech twice and 1 told me I need to buy a special automated recovery cd from them. The other said not to do that and I need to use the two cds I have (1. operating system cd, 2. Applications and Drivers dvd). Operating system is Windows XP professional on a HP laptop.I have completed the following steps. Can any one tell me if I am doing the right thing?
1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"
4) I press F8 to agree to license agreement
5) I press ESC "to continue installing afresh copy of windows xp without repairing". Below it has the following highlighted "C:windows "microsoft windows xp professional"

While in XP I deleted a partiain that had Fedora on it. I was using GRUB to do multi-boot. When I rebooted XP it booted to the GRUB command line. I rebooted and hit F12 to try to get to system settings and after I chose system settings it went right back to the GRUB command line. I rebooted again and hit F2 to get to system settings and it went straight to the GRUB command line again.I'm pretty sure I need to fix my MBR but, I can't change my settings to boot from my CD and I don't have a floppy drive.

Purchased a Presario SR1220nx two months ago. It came with a 'System Recovery Disk".(SRD) Is this all I would need incase of a complete software problem to get back in operation again or should I be copying some additional OS files to a CD ? What are the disadvantages of the SRD and the advantages of having the WinXP software ? Seems to me that the SRD is all that I need in case of a failure?

I have been trying to help a friend update or correct her winxp on her HP pavilion 520w I have a copy of my winxp cd from my dell system however I dont have the product key code to use it. So I have tried repeatedly to reset her computer to boot from her cdrom without success. I even posted here last week and someone suggested to tap the delete key when rebooting to change the boot sequence. I wasnt able to get it to work. However I did accidently discover that tapping F10 brings up the Recover system on her computer. Not knowing exactly for sure if I could just correct her winxp with recoverying the whole system I turned off the computer to stop it. I have 3 questions if the Recovery System on this HP model allows you to correct a current copy of your windows without reformatting? how to set this HP model to reboot from the CD-rom?

I had to perform an XP recovery because of various problems. My computer is now running fairly good except for a couple of things.1. Whenever I boot the computer I get a Windows Installer box pop up trying to load SFR. It tries to gather data, gets halfway and then disappears. It does this twice before it stops trying. Sometimes it will re-appear while I try to open files. Does the same as above then stops. How can I get rid of this?

I am trying to do a System Recovery.I backed everything up and do not mind reinstalling everything with a fresh start. The computer first started with a boot loop. I would turn the computer on and it would go to the black screen with the options to boot in "Safe Mode", " last config", or Normal.Anything I selected did not matter, it would go back to the same screen asking me to select one of the options "safe mode" etc. So I shut down the computer wanting to do a "r" repair with the System Recovery discs, so I rebooted to the BIOS (F11), changing the order of the boot sequence to CD-R/RW because I have the original HP Recovery CDs (8 discs total). I put disc One in the CD-R drive, selected "r" for repair.I put the 8 discs in as they asked, but once I got to the eighth disc, the comp said " Cannot create User Partition", so I turned the computer off and started over with disc One. This time I selected "f" for full recovery, went through all eight discs, then it said "Problem in Extracting process: xxxx can't be opened! the xxxx are all the files I noticed the computer was copying from the CD-Rs, I think.I took out the eighth disc, shut down and rebooted and now the screen reads "NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl +Alt+Del to restart.

I am using multiple user accounts in WinXP so I enter a password every time to log-in. when the pc is turned on, win boots to the log-in screen, I enter the password, press OK and then the whole process freezes on the screen saying: "Welcome, loading user's settings..."once, I was waiting for 30 minutes and nothing happend. still that screen, I can move with mouse, but there is no clock sign next to the mouse cursor. HDD light on my PC case is not blinking, it seems to me like HDD thinks it has nothing to do.I can solve this only with reseting PC (using the reset button). no ctrl+alt+delete or something.after reboot it works just always fine. password, OK, loading and I am in.
