View 3 RepliesIn the past, I could switch users on the computer simply by clicking Start->log off->switch user and the user I was switching from could keep all of their windows and applications while I used my user setting. Something has happened, and now I actually have to close everything on one user's side and log the user off to be able to get to my user account. Is there a way to get it back to being able to share the computer?

View 4 Replies View Relatedso i installed service pack 2 today and had restarted the computer only to find that the welcome screen didn't appear, but the normal log in screen that i was used to seeing with earlier windows os. i logged in as both myself and my mom trying to make the welcome screen return, but nothing i've tried works. we are also unable to do the quick switch thing so we're being forced to completely log off and then log on again under our respective user names. whenever i try to switch accounts i get this message:This computer is in use and has been locked.'Only *insert name here* or an administrator can unlock it

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a compact presario 3080 notebook running windows xp home with sp2 installed. I am unable to use the standby mode, the only option shown 1n the power settings menu for "what to do when I close the lid" is "do nothing" and the standby button is grayed out in the shutdown menu. This used to work, and I am not aware of installing anything that might have caused the problem. I have tried restoring to earlier dates with no luck. I have contacted HP and they tell me the only thing I can do is a complete restore to get this function working again. how I can fix this problem without doing the restore? If not can anyone tell me how to back up Windows xp so that I don't have to download all the updates again?

My HP OfficeJet R40xi works just fine when I boot up or re-boot my desktop PC, but if I've shutdown to "hibernate" or "standby" I consistently get a "This document failed to print" error message. This problem started after I installed the SP-2 patch. I've double checked my parallel port settings in system BIOS and Device Manager and I've removed & reinstalled the driver but so far haven't found a solution.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am getting random crashes, lock-ups, reboots, you name it. I have had to type this message on wordpad rather than in IE because it will freeze up within seconds. (This site is worse than others for some reason). I recently done a fresh install on my machine so there is very little on it. I have a 160gb sata drive and on 100gb of it I have windows xp sp2 installed and the remaining I have xp sp1 installed so I can switch between the two.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI run xp and have a HP Pavilion 9600. I've never used stand by before, but I have a standby key on my keyboard that my 11 month old son convenantly hits everytime I am online. I've tried hitting return, space, esc, and so forth but nothing brings it out, and I have to do a cold shut down.

The monitor turns off but that's as far as it gets...I then have to tuen it off manually and reboot everything.
Usually when this happens, the fan continues to run at high speed until I turn power off
My computer keeps switching itself to standby on its own after 20-30 minutes. This is a problem as I do alot of DVD back ups so it ends up stopping the software I use meaning I cant do any back ups whatsoever.
I have checked in my power settings and it is supposed to be set to always on, so have no idea why this is happining.
The computer is pretty much brand new from Dell so maybe it is some factory setting.
I have windows xp installed on my computer, the home edition. packet 2, Anyway, I have been trying to get my computer to go to stand by but it keeps telling me. system standby failed, the device driver for the standar 101/102 key or microsoft natural ps/2 keyboard device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. I tried to update the driver, but for this basic key board there is not a driver to update. It is the microsoft natural keyboard elite. Nothing special about this at all. Other than that my computer is about 5 years old and had windows 98 second edition on it, but would go into stand by then, but now that I have put XP on it, it will not go to stand by.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed SP3 and IE8 along with all updates. All went well except now Hibernate and Standby often kill the system including the cursor. If I boot and try Hibernate or Standby it usually works, but if I run for a while and try them they hang the system. The problem did not exist before I installed SP3 and IE8.

View 8 Replies View Relatedi plan to switch to windows vista from xp, but first have to find out the benefits of upgrading - and the vista features vis-a-vis the windows xp - as well as the system requirements for vista.
I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
My laptop was in perfect working order last night but when I came to turn it on this morning it wouldn't. No screen, no sound. Tried again and got a high pitched continuos beep from it so turned it off/on again, nothing. Pressed F8 to try start it up in safe mode but it wont do that either. There is NO screen at all coming up. If i cant start it up in safe mode is it DEAD?
View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday he was trying to copy a DVD. As far as I understand (which is limited), it froze and he turned it off. When you try to switch it on, you get a black screen with a white message. the jist of it says that Windows shut down and that to restart it you need to choose a mode - it gives you options 'safe mode' 'last known settings that worked' 'normal mode' etc. We have tried all of these modes. the most successful of which always looks really promising - you get the blue windows screen, logo and jingle it looks like it is starting up but then dies and the screen goes black. When you turn it on you get the black screen again and go around in circles.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

The reason I am trying to restore my system is because Photoshop is suddenly unable to save as a jpeg? It doesn't recognise the jpeg format when saving and saves as a Photoshop document. THen it wont recognise the file to open it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. Funnily enough photoshop elements has no problem with it.
