Jun 1, 2007when i log in my account i am unable to switch users. I have to log off and then they will be able to sign on.

Jan 21, 2008In the past, I could switch users on the computer simply by clicking Start->log off->switch user and the user I was switching from could keep all of their windows and applications while I used my user setting. Something has happened, and now I actually have to close everything on one user's side and log the user off to be able to get to my user account. Is there a way to get it back to being able to share the computer?

Feb 17, 2006so i installed service pack 2 today and had restarted the computer only to find that the welcome screen didn't appear, but the normal log in screen that i was used to seeing with earlier windows os. i logged in as both myself and my mom trying to make the welcome screen return, but nothing i've tried works. we are also unable to do the quick switch thing so we're being forced to completely log off and then log on again under our respective user names. whenever i try to switch accounts i get this message:This computer is in use and has been locked.'Only *insert name here* or an administrator can unlock it

Feb 20, 2005For some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

Aug 12, 2008I installed XP SP3 last night, and all was seeming pretty ok, surprisingly.But I've discovered that I can no longer switch between users. When I try to switch, the system freezes as it is loading the desktop for the second user and all I can do is reboot to get out of it. infuriating! There's no problem at all if I log out of my user account, and my wife then logs into hers. but they just won't run at the same time as they used to. I've tried checking to see if Terminal Services and RPC are running in the services list, and both are, so it's not that.

We have 3 users on the Welcome Screen and they all have administrator accounts. You can log on to any account with no problem. If you log off someone else can log on to their account with no problem.

Oct 20, 2008When I turn on my computer I don't get the usual blue log on screen with all the users, I get some lame pop up with just one use and the only other option is so shut the computer down. When I go to user accounts, the only user that comes up is my dads, which is a limited account, so I can not do much of anything on this computer. Aug 6, 2009I have a network laptop with local admin privileges. When I gave the laptop to our IT department to configure the unit as a corporate network laptop, I had set up a local admin account on the unit. However, when the system was returned to me the local admin account on the laptop had been changed to Debugger Users group. Anyway, in addition to my local Admin account, corporate IT also has a local admin account that they use to administer corporate network computers. I removed my local admin account from the Debugger Users group hoping to move it into the local admin users group. However, this is not panning out. Although, my local admin account will log on locally onto the laptop, it currently has no local group membership on the laptop. I think I now have two options: Call IT Dept. to remotely log onto my laptop and move the account I created as a local admin account which currently has no local group membership or use linux utility to remove the password set on their local group account, in other to have administrator privileges on my laptop so that I can move my local admin account (currently with no local group membership) to local administrators group on my laptop and ask them to reset that password after or call IT Dept to do it.

May 28, 2006Am having a sever problem with 1 users account on XP . It appears to have only afected 1 user account. The problem seams to have occured right after an update to adobe acrobat reader (coincidence maybe). Can not install any new software (error 82 says last file run is main .exe). Can`t update avast,ewido,ad-aware, or spybot from that users account. The other users accounts seams to work fine but find nothin on any of the scans other than AVG it says that the boot record ,system volume, and 3 of the ini files have changed and Ad-aware finds 11 items but when trying to remove them it locks. Hijack this can not be run on the affected user account as it says that it is not a valid picture file. Safe mode under the affected user account (administrator privlages) is no diferent. When trying to run chkdsk from a comand promt in safe mode it says that the system volume is in use by another aplication and have to scedual a scan on the next reboot. This finds nothing aswell. Repair was also tried from the Xp cd to no avail either. All of the online scans (Symantec , Panda soft, Trend Micro....etc) will not run on this account and find nothing on the other accounts.

Jul 13, 2005I have a Compaq laptop with XP which is linked to my main computer via wireless connection. I have had a minor problem for a while when booting. After loading up XP I get a log in box with 'Administrator' in the box. A second window opens on top of the first which says "Unable to log on because of an account restriction" I found that if I clicked OK on this box and then entered my user name, ('Bill') in place of 'Administrator' I could then get in and the computer worked fine. (There is no password for 'Bill' a blank field works.) Now when I try to boot up the same thing happens, but both boxes only appear momentarily and then are gone and the machine locks up with the message "Windows is starting up" on the screen. I have started in Safe Mode and gone into Control Panel/User Accounts. This shows two Computer Administrators, 'Administrator' and 'Bill'. It also shows 'Guest. Guest account is off'. Can anyone assist me to get the computer to log in as 'Bill'? I can't work out how to do this. It is a home computer and I am the only one using it so there is no need for multiple user safeguards.
