System Is Running W32 Bit Or W64 Bit?
Sep 19, 2009Some software downloads ask whether my operating system is Windows 32 bit or Windows 64 bit. How do I tell? I've look in the system information folder but see nothing there.

View 4 RepliesThe my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWell, it appears that I am having a common problem: I seem to be running out of system resources on a regular basis. I have a Dell Latitude D531, Turion 64 X2 mobile TL-60 2 GHz, with 1.87 GB of RAM.I mainly use outlook (with a several hundred GB .PST file), firefox 3.5.1 with google toolbar and IE tab add-ons, the newest version of foxit and a proprietary office-based software simultaneously.About three months ago, I recollect seeing a distinct performance lag with the computer and started to run out of system resources on a regular basis. Programs wouldn't launch without a message (or sometimes a system resource message appeared) and running apps would crash after hanging. When this starts to happen, I can close all of my applications and still see hang-ups and apps crash.
I archived my PST, run fewer apps at once, restored XP, cleared up HD space and run several different anti-virus/malware/adware programs with limited success. I have also attempted to remove as many non-essential applications, in case of a conflict that I was unaware of. At this point, I think the problem is software-based but beyond my comprehension.
I am having some difficulty formatting my hard drive that has XP loaded on it. I use to be able to do anything on my system that used Windows 98 but I'm lost trying to do anything on this system.

After installing my new e6600, eVGA 680i mobo and OCZ DDR2 1000 ram today I reformatted my 300gig Maxtor SATA drive, once i got done reformatting I tried to boot into windows but I got the blue screen of death instead saying: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185&sd=RMVP#appliesto. The error message said to disable bios cache and/or boot into safe mode, both of which had no effect and I am fucking stumped as shit, someone please help me out here, I am so eager to try out my new stuff and it is really pissing me off. EDIT: And I have also already tried reinstalling windows once again, and the I have a MSDN copy so it is before SP1 or SP2 and I think that might be my problem, but I have no clue how to update as of now in this condition.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at some of the different processes currently running on my computer, and I recognize most of them. For those that I don't recognize, I usually Google them. Everything is fine, but I was just wondering if its normal to have multiple of the same process? For example, there are currently 5 SVCHOST.EXE's running, two in SYSTEM, two in NETWORK SERVICE, and one in LOCAL SERVICE.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIn my list of processes under task manager, the process "System" runs every about every five seconds for a split-second, taking up about 20% of my CPU. This doesn't matter too much when running lower-end applications that require little activity, but when I run games that need much more of the CPU to run, I get skips every 5 seconds because "System" will run no matter what every 5 seconds.

Norton 2005 says it doesn't seem to be harming my sysetm, but my stsem has seemed to be slowing lately. Also, on my Ctrl + Alt + Delete it says rundll32.exe is running at startup. Should it be running at startup, and how do I know if I have the Trojan or not?
View 1 Replies View RelatedGot a system I'm looking at for someone I know. They have a file extension issue that I'm not familiar with. Here's what it is and what they think they did to get it that way.Currently all but a couple their shortcuts on the desktop have a .lnk extension attached to them. If you try to double click the shortcut to open the program windows tells you that it can't open the file and askes you what program to use. Here's what they were doing when they noticed this problem. They went into Windows Explorer and accessed the "tools" menu. From there they went to "folder options" and selected the "file types" tab. They clicked to create a new file extension, entered "lnk" for the extension and clicked "ok" Then they selected the new extension from the list and clicked the "advanced" option. In the resulting window they unchecked the "confirm open after download" option and clicked "ok". After going through this sequence they noticed that all of their shortcuts had been modified with this extension. Also now if you create a new shortcut it is automatically given this file extension. They tried going back to the folder options and removing the extension but that hasn't helped the problem any. Changing the name of the shortcut back to the original format doesn't help either. The system is currently running Windows XP with service pack 1.
