Oct 6, 2009My machine runs fine for a bit then starts to stall and the screen goes black for a few seconds. After an hour or so the computer then locks and needs restart.

Stalls At Splash Screen
Jul 23, 2005I am running windows XP Home edition with SP2. When starting up it stalls at the XP splash screen with the flashing bar below it. I can start in safe mode but haven't had any luck with the system restore.

Jan 12, 2009My son has a Dell dimension XP. It wont boot past the windows splash screen. We can get into safe mode, from there we have tried system restore. It did the restore but still wont boot up into windows. We have also tried chkdsk /f and /r but it tells us that the system is in use by another process. We have disabled the startup up progs, and tried again but it stills says the same. OK so we tried using the xp installation disk, changed the bios to boot from CD Attempted to do REPAIR, but it said ' set up did not find any HDD installed in your computer.

Aug 6, 2005I am using WinXP SP2 and just two days ago the computer stalls at the loading screen (black screen says Windows XP and the blue loading bar underneath). It doesnt completely freeze but it just keeping on loading and never gets to windows, even after I wait for 10 mins. I have tried F8 and used 'last know good configuration and that didn't help'. The only change that i've made was instaling a new DVD burner a few days and it worked no problem after installation. The stall problem started after I manaully shut down the computer (press down power for 10 secs) when my computer froze from using dvd shrink. I'm pretty sure its not the software problem.. it should be hardware problem? Should I update dvd firmware? Is there anything else I can do to fix the stall problem?

Oct 28, 2008its my previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:
Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2
Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help!
Drive Failed A Disk Check: Stalls At Startup?
Jun 10, 2005I have a larged data drive that failed a disk check. It stalls when starting stage two (I belive that is the verification of indexing). I have been able to back-up all of the folders except for a large folder of raw video. The PC locks up when I attempt to access/copy this folder (it appears to be part of the problem). I want to make an attempt to recover this data before reformatting the drive. The check disk fails both at start up or if I run from the desktop both in regular and safe mode.

Jul 17, 2005when I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : windowssystem32configsystem."
You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?

Nov 10, 2006i get this error when i tried to open up my computer, first the windows xp loading screen works fine, then after that the screen just goes black and stays like that forever. this happened when i tried to uninstall a USB Bluetooth driver and it was requested to restart my pc so i did, and after that restart i cant get in no more, the screen just goes black after the windows xp load screen. im wondering how can i fix this problem? please help me guys... thank you.. and o yeah one more thing.. when i tried it on safe mode it went to the welcome screen but after that when i try to move my cursor i didnt move at all then i restart my pc again and the whole thing happens once more

Jul 20, 2005friend whose computer has crashed the screen had frozen. He could do nothing except reboot it using the power button but on rebooting, there was a 'no signal' message on a black screen. We have checked the monitor connections (the monitor works when connected to his second computer) and even replaced the video card but of course this made no difference (no signal) We've taken out the HD and installed it on his second system. Jul 15, 2007my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart.
Next time, generally it would work perfect.So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.
Won't Boot. Black Screen With No Cursor After The Logo Screen
Aug 9, 2010it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me how to fix this?

Jul 3, 2006The machine does the usual, POST etc, does all its checks and then goes to boot from the HDD(HDD is indicated in BIOS etc). At this very stage (just before the WinXP splash Screen) the Screen (LCD) just goes black and does not ever recover. There is no error messages and the HDD LED blinks a couple more times then does nothing. LCD power light stays on green. I have to either turn it off via power button or do a restart with Ctrl,Alt + Del.
I have disconnected all peripherals except Video Card, HDD and still no luck. The only reason why i left the Video Card was that there is no onboard video and i had no other Video cards to replace it. I cant even boot into safe mode.I manage to resolve the problem by doing a WinXP repair over the top but what i really want to know is, was it a corrupt/damaged MBR that was causing this problem or was it a corrupt driver? I have read a few articles about nVidia cards giving black screens but none seem to be similiar to mine.

Mar 27, 2006I have repair-installed my windows the other day, and everything is going fine. Except for when i decided to restart my computer after oinstalling my sound drivers.
I restart, log on after typing in my pass and it shows my desktop for 2 seconds and the black screen appears. It doesnt have anyhting to do with the sound driver installation because i tried restarting without installing them, and it sitll messed up. The only time it comes on properly is if i press F8 on start up and choose "last best known configuration". and then it starts right up. What can i do to stop this malfunction.
