Just wondering if anyone knows of a program that will copy files and folders along thier permissions.I came across the Scopy stuff on M$ but just wondering if there is a easier way
View 9 RepliesI got a hard drive out of a computer running windows XP home (this computer was not booting in to windows), so I put the hard drive in a caddy and plugged it via USB in to another system so I can get photos, etc, off the hard drive before doing a reinstall of windows. I can look at the files on the HDD I have in the caddy but I do no have permission to open or copy/paste these photos or any other files under the user account I was using as I had a password on this account

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have old backup of favorites (bunch of *.lnk files) from Internet Explorer that i had on cd and forgot about it. Then i formated my pc and had to start over collecting them.
Now after year i find out my old favs was on backup cd and i want to merge my old favorites with my current ones, the problem is there is about 100 links in old folder and about 200 links in current folder and many of them lead to same sites, i dont wanna have duplicates and i dont wanna sort them manually.
Is there prog that can copy file from one folder to another, checking if each file from source folder is not present in destination folder (and subfolders) under different name (by checking size or crc or md5 whatever)?
Or prog that can check which of files from source folder (without subfolders) are same as files in destination folder (without subfolders) and mark them to delete or move or smooth
I am running Windows XP Home on 2 machines. I have them connected in a home network and, for both machines, they are sharing their drive Cs. But for security reasons, I cannot seem to share the Windows and Program Files folders. Is there anyway to override the security and share them anyway?

When I try to copy/paste files and folders in windows XP explorer (or in the desktop or a program's dialog box), windows wants to re-install one of the programs I have already installed on my computer or that I installed once upon a time.
Currently this is happening with Roxio Easy media Creator 7, but in the past it has happened with many other programs, such as MS Office, Roxio and some other shareware programs.
I had Windows Explorer open while running my compter today and noticed that C:Program Files and C:Windows folders was growing. They must have started out at about 1GB or so and by the time they had stopped growing the C:Program Files folder was a little over 3GB and the C:Windows folder was a little over 4GB. I don't know if this is normal or not but am including the text from a HiJackThis log. I am running Windows XP Pro. Can someone tell me if there is a problem or if this is normal?

There's an option in that pane which says "show files", I clicked that and it displayed the hidden folders. How do I restore it as it was before? I tried tools>folder>view and ticked "do not show hidden files and folders" but it still shows the folders.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI used "drag & drop" to move some of my documents to a cd rw disk on my D drive. It all transferred well, however, when I open the files and edit them it does not allow me to "save as" on that same cd on the D drive and says, "You do not have permission to save in this directory. See the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?" So it wants me to save what I have on the D Drive CD RW disk back to my C drive on my cpu.This is my computer, I am the administrator and have full permissions so I do not understand why I can't edit and save my own cd's.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe registry on one of my computers is corrupt and if I try to copy the files from the WindowsRepair folder using the windows system repair tool, I'm told the files cannot be found. One possible solution I thought of is using the registry files from my other computer running Windows XP. I don't even know if this is possible, but if it is, how can I transfer the files. I would put them on a CD but the CD drive won't open when the system repair tool is running, and they're too big to fit on a floppy disk, even one at a time (the system and software files are both over 2mb.)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble running a dos medical office management program after copying it via a Zip disk from a Windows 95 to a Windows XP computer.All files copy correctly and are installed on the Win XP hard drive ultimately.When I start the program It tells me that I need to increase the number of files in the Config.sys file from 40 to at least 99 files. After going to the Sysedit32 folder in XP, I found the Config.sys file (with nothing in it) and wrote the FILES=99. After re-booting XP I still get the same message. The dos program starts up the same way. When I copied and installed the program to another Win 95 or 98 computer the program runs fine after
changing the Config.sys FILES=40 as prompted. Am I changing the correct file? The program uses FOXPRO 2.5 for the databases. The is no Config.sys file in the dos program
I want to copy the screen to Clipboard, from an old DOS drafting program. This program works OK, but will only load by filling the total screen, i e no taskbar etc available. Various combinations using PrtScn key have no effect (I can view the clipboard OK when the DOS program is minimised). Also hot-key commands from a Screen capture program do not work

It's running fine now, but everytime I install a new program, when I restart the machine, all the newly installed programs' folders pop up (e.g. showing the uninstall and help links in the program's particular folder; it usually happens with new software just the once) - and it's getting ridiculous. I try to open a drive to search through it.. such as the c: drive.. and it will do a little processing.. and it will open the browser to the 'search' program instead of opening my drive. I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm using Win XP and, using the built in Zip feature,have zipped up 14 files that include one .exe file and one .bas file.When I try to Extract All files it extracts all except these two files.It says that the files have been blocked to protect the computer, then I can click on a link to find out how to unblock the files but the instructions to do so don't make sense.The instructions tell you to save the file, then right click/properties/unblock, but I can't see how you can save a file if it hasn't been unzipped.How can I stop the .exe and .bas files from being blocked

I am searching a large folder of mp3 files to copy to my mp3 player.Periodically and seemingly at random the folder I am searching through resets.That is it blinks and shifts back to the top of the folder.So I then have to remember where I was and find the place that I left off.
I'm using an SD card for a Palm Pilot T|X and I'm copying files back and forth frequently using an SD reader, but I'm starting to get a couple of error messages (in XP, not on the actual Palm) while copying files FROM the SD card (not TO the card, I'm copying TO the card just fine). For example, if I copy specific mp3 files, I get this error message- Cannot Copy *filename*: The parameter is incorrect. The weird thing is that only certain mp3 files do this while others copy just fine. The weirder thing is I can play the file in Winamp directly from the card just fine. Yet other messages pop up with different files. Sometimes I get that specific message with another file, but I also get this one--
Cannot copy *filename*: Cannot read from the source file or disk I've noticed that the first one is far more common than the second. I've also noticed that the second can be fixed by safe-removing the SD card and reinserting it (up until now, I haven't been safe-removing, which I now suspect may be the source of the problem). I've also noticed that I can't copy files from my card to my Palm's internal memory using FileZ, but that may be unrelated (also, I know that this isn't a Palm forum anyway; I'm mainly asking about my problem within XP).
