View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a computer with XP Pro loaded. Recently discovered that the XP Pro is not "legal" so I went and bought XP Home (all I needed anyway). Loaded XP
Home but now when the computer starts up I get the choice to either run XP Home in safe mode or XP Pro as before. Bascially I want to run with XP Home and discard XP Pro so that I am legal and can register for updates etc. Err, what should I do?
Computer in question is a Dell Inspiron 1100, Intel celeron 2.0ghz, 128mbram, xphome sp2
The system takes almost 3 minutes to boot to desktop! I have tried removing nearly everything in startup using msconfig. I've run virus check (Norton), Spyware Removal checks (Adaware and Spysweeper), checked hijack log for any problems (almost empty), removed temp files, tweaked performance options, themes, removed unwanted programs, emptied recycle bin...everything I can think of to speed it up. The system doesn't have alot of extras on it so I'm perplexed. I tried loading another virus program on to see if maybe norton isn't working and its missing something but I got an error message about a .dll (I should've written this down!)
I've been having this problem for about three weeks now and it's really starting to get annoying Every time I start my computer, that message that comes up when your computer is unexpectedly shows and I can choose to start with either safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start windows normally. Every single one of these that I choose, the exact same thing happens:The Windows loading screen will come up and the boxes will go from left to right in that rectangle under the windows logo and then all of a sudden a blue screen with some text on it will flash really fast and then the computer will restart. I can't read any of the text because it restarts too fast.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was thinking about adding some memory to my computer tomorrow. Where on Windows 2000 would I find what type of RAM to buy or would I be better off pulling a stick out of the computer and taking it to the store with me? I have 196 megs of RAM right now and I can't run my virus and spyware without slowing to a standstill. I read somewhere that now a days you need almost a gig of RAM. Is that true? How much Ram can they put on one stick now?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to design and get a Website up and running. I am finding this confusing enough. Then Dreamweaver told me I ought to check to see if IIS (Internet Information Server) was installed, so I did (it wasn't - no C:/Inetpub). Then, again following directions, I went to Control Panel/ Add or Remove Programs/ Add or Remove Window Components to install IIS.
Not an option. So I went to www.microsoft.com/downloads and could find all sorts of ancillary helpers to IIS (Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Resource Kit Tools, Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager for Windows XP, Internet Information Services (IIS) Lockdown Tool 2.1) but noplace from which I could just download IIS 6.0.

My computer did this really weird thing. I restarted my computer this morning, and to my horror, all my documents had disappeared. But from the Microsoft documentation, looks like I cannot create a system restore point, which will remain permanently. It gets automatically deleted after some time. View 11 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a certified used Lenovo laptop, 3000 C200, 8922-2FU. On booting up, the Client Security Setup Wizard comes up and it has no place to click where you can tell it not to come up again. I do not want to use this feature so each time I have to click cancel and then again click, yes I am sure. Very frustrating. I have tried everything. I called tech support but they did not know so they are researching it and said they would call back.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is a great forum and has been a great resource. Now, I need to ask for some help. (I hope this is the right forum. Didn't seem like a hardware issue and doesn't seem software-specific.)Ive searched on Techguy, several other forums, and Googled to find a fix to the problem, without any luck. Gateway Tech support did not have any ideas, other than doing a full system re-install, which I would like to avoid. Heres the lowdown: Program screens will begin to autoscroll a few minutes after being open. Its not really a smooth scroll. Kind of jerky and a constant up-down, up-down. Sometimes a full screen, sometimes only several lines at a time. If I put the mouse pointer on a frame or a toolbar of the window, the scrolling stops. If I move the cursor to the screen within the frame to click a link, edit text, or open an email, the autoscrolling starts. It does not happen if the open application only has one screen of data and it does not happen on the desktop. It happens in Outlook, Firefox, IE6, Word, and Excel. I have not noticed it in Kasperskey, Skype, or Spysweeper. I did not notice the problem when I booted into Safe Mode to re-install drivers (but I may not have been in the screens long enough for the problem to start).
The problem began on Sunday when I was in a Citrix Metaframe session (provided by my employer). The open applications in the Metraframe window began doing this autoscroll. I logged off, rebooted and tried logging back on. Citrix wouldnt allow me to log on, and I began having the scrolling problem with programs on my PC. Our IT dept. says there is nothing wrong with Citrix and no one else had this problem. What Ive done: Re-installed updated video drivers; re-installed MS Office; tried several system restore points; run: Kasperskey, Spysweeper, HJT, Ewido, Spybot, Adaware, and Symantec online all came back clean; tried different electrical outlets; unplugged everything else on the circuit; checked the USB plugs for the keyboard/mouse; checked for latest mouse/keyboard drivers; tried changing the monitor refresh rate.
