May 20, 2010
I was trying to do a OS recovery (Repair) using a Dell XP pro SP3 disk on a Dell Dimension 8400. When I try to boot XP it goes to the XP boot screen Then I get a blue screen. I was hopeing just to do a repair but I keep getting no HDD found! The HDD is a seagate 160 gig SATA it is present in setup as 0 drive. I have ran a seagate test it sees the HDD. So does Ubuntu in fact thas how I got to this point.

Encountered a Blue Screen of Death error. The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?

I am trying to become computer smart......still working on it. My problem....Blue screen will not load nt4 os......BS states memory dump. Tried to restart......not working. I can enter, and did, f2 startup. I read where I needed to delete an old partition, did, now nt4 startup disk with not load, as i am prompted that the drive is too big (3.99). I cant seem to partition the drive? I would like to just start from scratch, wipe drive, start over..I just want to get this going so I could update nt4 (currently has sp1). I think I have my work cutout for me.

My external hard drive has suddenly stopped working. My computer can see the drive (but not the drive label) and the shortcut I have for the drive will open it but when it does there is nothing there.I have downloaded a few so called free data recovery pieces of software and they can all see the data on my drive with no problems, even stuff I'd previously deleted seems to be available for recovery, however, as soon as you try to recover the data these "free to use" tools need to be registered and paid for.

I have an issue with my Inspiron laptop. One day about six months ago, it locked up. When restarting I got a blue screen saying "STOP: c00002221 Unknown Hard Error SystemRootSystem32tdll.dll." I looked all over the internet and found a bunch of people with the same issue. Most were told they were in for a format and reinstall of Windows XP to correct the problem and that all was lost. I did find one forum suggesting to do a repair/install which I did. worked just like an upgrade and all my files and settings were preserved.

I have just installed a Samsung CLX-2160 on my Dell Dimension 5150 PC,which runs Windows XP Media Centre. As soon as the PC started reading the installation CD, it crashed with the following (taken from event viewer):The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0x804f106f, 0xba4fbaac, 0xba4fb7a8). A dump was saved in: C:WINDOWSMEMORY.DMP.
I rebooted with F8 and chose last working config. After a little enlightened guesswork and advice I removed my old Dell 725 printer driver(which had started giving an error message on startup). Now I could load the Samsung driver etc and the new printer works. However, XP still crashes whenever I reboot normally I can still bring up a working system with F8 as above (but I have to reload my PCI card drivers again - 2 port serial and sound card - for some reason)

I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.

I couldn't seem to find the appropriate section for this, so move this to another section if it's unrelated. I was reading through this networking textbook about operating systems and I just found out that a computer can have more than one operating system. I have Windows XP installed through the Data Drivers Recovery CD and that's all I got related to my computer OS WINXP. If I wanted to install Windows XP to another computer that had Windows Vista, with that CD, is it possible, even though it says Data Drivers Recovery CD? Or do I need the actual Installation of WINDOWS XP (and other OS'S?).

My niece installed drivers for a Kodak camera on her HP laptop at the weekend. Everything seemed to go fine until she switched the machine on the next day, when it failed during the boot. She's reasonably tech competent so by the time she called me she'd tried all the safe mode options with no luck: it would get up to mup.sys in the boot and then reset. I did try to access the HP Recovery software, but it just comes up with a pale blue blank screen and a windows-style pointer and stops there.

I am trying to do a system recovery back to the original condition and I have taken what I need to save. I have talked to HP tech twice and 1 told me I need to buy a special automated recovery cd from them. The other said not to do that and I need to use the two cds I have (1. operating system cd, 2. Applications and Drivers dvd). Operating system is Windows XP professional on a HP laptop.I have completed the following steps. Can any one tell me if I am doing the right thing?
1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"
4) I press F8 to agree to license agreement
5) I press ESC "to continue installing afresh copy of windows xp without repairing". Below it has the following highlighted "C:windows "microsoft windows xp professional"

Hardware: Asrock 775 dual vista, E6300, 2gigs of memory, x1900gt video cardI installed new stuff on existing Hard Disk. Had stability issues.I had a hard time getting video card to work right.I was getting reboots. So I do a windows repair. Some help, but then I was getting blue screens. So i spend many hours between safemode and what not trying to save data to a cd so i can do a fresh install.I do a fresh install, and windows hangs on the install. Several times. When it does finish, i get blue screens for thinks like Generic host process for win32 LSA shell.I tried the internet using exploring, it would would always cause the computer to reboot, just a matter of how long I got before it did.I got firefox installed on 3 try, but it had same issues.SO, I did chkdsk /p, it finds more than 1 error. I do a chkdsk /r and retry my computer, same issues. I do a Hard Disk scan from MY Computer, properties of c drive, tools check both boxes there and restart. still had problems after that.I download my Hard Disk utility program, and have it do its thing, including a surface scan that took an hour.So then I figure it must have been the fresh install hang. I do a format using the Hard Disk utility, take 6hrs. So I start a fresh install this morning, and during the install, I get the blue screen it says Stop: 0x00000024 So after all that, is it a BIOS issue? The mobo had 1 step lower than the most recent bios version according to the Asrock website. SHould I install a new bios?If I do a flash and install, I can do the most recent and it will cover all the previous versions, correct?

xp professional comes up before windows I'll try to make this short:On 2/15, I got a win32/heur virus. It took me 8 hours to resolve.Today I ran Malwarebytes during this, my Free AVG popped up and said that there are 13 infected file in my restore. I put them in the vault.I corrected my problem yesterday by finally restoring to a way earlier time because AVG told me there was a virus, but could not fix it. It said that I needed the SP3 disk. I didn't have that, I downloaded this from MS, so I didn't have a disk.Anyway,Now when I boot up, on the black screen it shows "xp professional" for a few seconds, then it goes into my windows xp splash screen. How can I by-pass this black screen to go right into the windows splash screen. Also,What is the best malware/trojan program I can use to make sure everything is out. It's been working fine now for 2 days, I hope it's not there. (AVG doesn't appear to be working good for me.

When i installed winXP on my new rig, something happened in the middle and the install failed. When i rebooted with windows CD, i re-installed winXP.What happened is that i had the regular win install on drive C:, and another win XP install on drive D:formatted the D: drive, to delete the bad installation.
My problem is that, whenever i start up my computer, just after booting, it brings me to the Operating System Choosing screen, where you need to choose which OS you wanna boot. The first one is the normal windows which i use, the second option im guessing was made with the corrupted installation, and appears even after i formatted drive D

Recently reinstalled Windows XP SP2 Home, due to a messed up Registry and upon reinstalling my screen resolution became 640 x 480 px, and whenever I try to change it, my computer won't let me. According to Microsoft.com, I have to install the driver for my monitor. I can easilly re-download the driver from the Dell website, but for some reason my computer won't let me go to Monitor settings. In order to install the monitor's driver I need to access this. Below is an image of the Advanced Display settings window when I open it. Note how the Monitor Properties is unclickable.

The reason why I dont want to just upgrade is because some things I use dont play nice with XP pro and I want a clean install of it. How can I get my computer to install this second OS properly?

My friend gave me a Dell Latitude Laptop, Windows XP O/S to look at. It is a couple years old and was given to him by his old company which went out of business. He has not used it until recently and was unable to get into it due to a network password screen. I accessed it with ''admin'' as a username and no password. I cannot change the "users" information or disable the password because I have no "administrator" rights and don't kow the password for the administrator. I tried the default blank password trick. Once in, I noticed network software installed and I cannot access the internet with my ethernet cable. Basically, I am just trying to get it where he can use it around the house. Is there a way to disable the company installed networks, or make them go away completely? I have no XP O/S on disk, so I am trying to avoid a complete format. If I can just get the machine back to the basic XP O/S it would be good to go.

Before it restarts a blue screen appears with some text in it but I couldn’t read it because it just flashes a split second. After my pc has restarted a box pops out saying –The system has recovered form a serious error. But it doesn’t state what kind of error it just ask if you want to send the info to Microsoft. I hope someone could help me here. What are the causes and what do I need to do? (by the way im connecting to the net thru a modem, dial –up)
