New Install Using 50% More HDD Space
Apr 1, 2010
xp pro sp3 and all additional MS updates. New install with the same apps and its at 11.9gig. Previous installs it was 7gig. This is C partition. All my personal files, downloads, favorites, etc are on D partition. Partitions made using the xp pro install disk, just like I did on previous installs. New HDD too, using NTFS just like before. Only extra apps is skype (31.75meg) and I dont currently have Thunderbird installed, but did before.
If I click on an email link it opens outlook, even though it was not installed. I did double check add/remove programs and OE was not checked and it listed 0.0 MB. I then installed OE and after reboot, its checked but still lists 0.0 MB. Most apps listed whether checked or not list 0.0 MB. Some apps whether installed or not installed list sizes over 0.0 MB. Also, under Network Connections there is LAN or High Speed Network~Local Area Connection 3, as before(except for the 3), but now a new Internet Gateway~Internet Connection, which I've never seen before. Its properties listed uTorrent twice and Skyipe twice. Ive had Utorrent installed before, but this is my first time using Skype. Whats Internet Gateway~Internet Connection? If I un-check Skype and or UTorrent(twice), close properties, then open it back up, they are all checked again.

I'm looking to free up space on my hard drive. Is it OK to uninstall old .NET versions, old java versions, and old windows updates? The old versions occupy tremendous space on my computer and if they can be safely removed I'll love to remove them. Is it safe to remove old versions of .NET framework, java consoles, and windows updates?

How much HD space would be needed to install NT server 4.0 and all of it's service packs? Best guesses are also welcomed and more than 1 response as well.
Also, How long should it take for Pentium 4 PC running XP Pro take to boot up?

I just installed XP on a new 106GB HD. Somehow I created a primary partition of 7.81GB letter I. That left me 141.23 GB of unallocated disk space. I've already installed my OS and most of my software and other peripherals. That's obviously used most of the 8GB of the primary. The unallocated part of the drive isn't assigned a drive letter so I'm hoping that helps me. I don't need a partition or if I have to have one a small one is fine. I thought the 8GB would be good for the OS with some extra, but I'm real concerned about all that unused space. I did a google and did learn about right clicking on the unallocated side and selecting new partition and taking it from there. I was just a little concerned about making a 2nd mistake. A little frazzled as this is all within 3 hours.

I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.

I recently noticed that my free space on hard drive has been eroded and my used space has been increasing. I have not added any software. Much to my dismay I cannot figure out why this would occur. We did make recovery disks and removed our partition some weeks ago. It seems our C drive is using up space without any explanation. Ran many different anti virus and spyware software and they did not detect anything.

I don't get it. the more i go on, the more and more disk space seems to vanish into thin air. xp usually takes a couple of gigs up on the hard disk, right? maybe 5 gigs at the very most. i've got 8 gigs taken up by videos in one folder. the programs i've got installed are negligable. the program files folder is 500mb. and yet my disk only has 20 gigs spare on a 40 gig hard disk. i've looked in every folder on the hard disk and i simply can't find any folders with anything of any great size in it. i've defragged the hard drive.

I currently have 13.0 GB of used space and 5.58 GB of free space. I would like to get more free space.
My computer is about 2 years old. In those two years, I had to re-install Windows XP and everything else on my computer...for reasons unknown...I recently performed a New Installation of Windows XP on my computer. I don't have alot of things installed on my computer. The total space all the programs in my Add and Remove programs file takes up is only 1GB. Since I had to start over and re-install everything and my programs only add up to 1GB, Shouldn't I have more free space ?

how to expand the disk space that I have. The primary C drive has the OS on it and it is only about 14GB, and my entire disk is about 50GB, the unallocated space is about 34 GB. I have tried to expand the primary partition unsuccessfully. Do I have to reload the entire OS ? I do not have the origional disk to reload the OS. It is a sony PCG-CRT160 computer with 500 mb ram and approximately a 50 GB primary drive that was partitioned when I got it.

Recently ive been getting the yellow triangle icon with an ''!'' in it, saying that I have very low disk space. Ive noticed my computer has also been running slower than usual. Maybe half a year ago I came here with the same problem, and someone (forget the name, sorry) posted a link to a program somebody made that clears your disk space up for you. It deleted old unused files, and it worked great. You sort of just clicked on the link on the site, a box came up, and you checked off what you needed to be cleared, and then the program fixed it for you.

while trying to fix another problem, by repairing WP on an Averatec 3200, the Install went into the actual install mode, rather than the repair mode. As I don't have the security key (someone who will go un-named, but I have my suspicions, threw away the plastic CD holder with the key taped to the back) I can't continue the install and I can't get the install off the computer. The reason that I was trying to repair is that I have the Log-on Virus which makes it impossible to log on and do anything about the virus. Can't even get to SAFE mode to try to remove the virus with Spyware Doctor.

HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.

To check the space remaining on my C Drive, 14.9 GB partitioned out of a total of 120, that 11.3 Gig are used. When I check all the folders contained on the C drive and add them up, I come up with just under 10 Gig. I do video work and need that extra Gig for burning DVDs. Anybody have any idea where it's gone

I just added a new 250 gig Maxtor Sata hard drive to my system and when I installed Win XP I noticed that it has used up 108 gig of space. I have never seen this happen before. I tried reformatting and reinstalling the OS several times and got the same result. I did not have this problem when I added the 200 gig Maxtor Sata drive, this is now my additional storage drive. I have a 3.06 cpu, with 1 gig of memory on an AB60N motherboard. I have never seen XP take up more than maybe 2 gig of space. Along with all the other drivers and programs I used to have it only used about 10 maybe 12 gig altogher.

Now when I go to reformat it, my Windows disk indicates there are only 131 GB available. It was never partitioned except for the 8 GB that the Hard Disk took up when it was new Why doesn't it detect the entire 200 GB?

I have just installed a fresh copy of windows XP sp2 on 2 machines. Both Dell Optiplex desktops. Usually it prompts that it has found new hardware for each device it hasn't found drivers for. Device manager lists them with a yellow exclamation icon.Problem I have now though is that the fresh install of XP does not show these prompt at all, although device manager lists them and if i go in there and update driver the device works. The problem I have is that basically i usually copy a driver heirarchy to the systemdrive and point the registry at them, which results in automatic installation on boot. This no longer works and I assume they are related as it doesn't look like it's automatically trying to install these devices. Is there a setting somewhere, seems very strange, what with it being a fresh install?

I have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.

At 200-300MB, there is no ability to defragment. I use a CCleaner, and Eusing Registry Cleaner regularly. Wher
