Media Edition 2005 Media Centre

Aug 1, 2008

Since installing SP3 my media centre will not open although the rest of XP runs fine. I get a report 'Strong name validation failed for assembly 'C:Windowsehomeehshell.exe. The file may have been tampered with or it was partially signed but not fully signed with the correct private key.I have the original installation disk from Dell, but it won't recognise the key that came with the pc to re install it. Is there any way I can repair the file in question. I have tried uninstalling sp3, and using the recovery program, but nothing is working to make it work again.

Media Centre Will Not Boot

Aug 16, 2008

I've got a major problem and will be as concise as I can.XP Media Centre will not boot. When XP boots normally I get a message saying the Hive is corrupt or missing and the problem is C:systemrootsystem32configsystem with a c000000218 (sorry if wrong number of zeros). From recovery console chkdsk shows 'unrecoverable problem'; though fixmbr does seem to do something. When I try to install a fresh copy of XP MC there are no partitions shown to install to.The interesting thing is, I can boot either XP or Vista on my PC (OS' on separate HDs) and can see all the files on the C-drive and the files on other partitions on this drive from 'Computer' in Vista. So I guess the hard drive isn't faulty.

Media Centre On Xbox 360

Aug 11, 2007

Im currently having problems with establishing a connection between my XBox 360 and my WMC PC. Here is what I have done so far.

1. Installed the expander on my PC.

2. Verified the code on XBox and PC.

3. Checked WMC version, and all is upto date

4. On XBox gone to Windows Media Centre and it comes up with "Windows Media Centre contacting" with a progress bar.

That page stays on for about 15/20 secs and then I get a message on the XBox saying "Another user or application on the Windows Media Centre-based PC has disconnected this device."I have read several topics on forums and microsoft support pages but all the things I have tried have failed. I have also tried just using Media Player 11 using it's sharing media options but it does not detect the XBox at all. However my laptop does. All programs which could affect eg: Firewalls, Decoders etc have been Uninstalled.

Cannot Boot Media Centre Edition At All

Dec 13, 2008

the problem was described as a non booting pc. That was it.I booted the pc to find the message ntldr missing. Did a repair of the mbr and replaced boot files. Still no luck. So i thought i'd try a live linux cd in it to see if i could work out weather it needs replacement hardware or whether it is a software error.
Anyway the pc boots and i've got access to all the drives, I take this opportunity to backup the user files and also take a copy of the hidden partion (as its a packard bell pc and the recovery files are there)I've downloaded the recovery cd from packard bell but it keeps asking for master disk 1 to be placed in dvd drive (which i haven't got cos the user has not made the backup disks). What i want to know is, is it possible to make the backup discs from the files I have recovered from the hidden partition? Is it possible to write these files with nero for instance as a bootable dvd and then install like that (i haven't tried this yet because the file size is 5.5 gig and i've got no dvd 9 discs to hand)Or last resort boot these files over the network and install that way. (i've never tried this and i'm not sure i know whats involved)

Media Centre Volume Control

Mar 11, 2007

If I use XP Pro my Logitech Elite keyboard volume control knob turns the volume up and down smoothly regardless of if I am gaming etc but when I use the keyboard in XP Media Centre the volume control becomes very jerky and virtually uncontrollable. For instance it will be at 30% but if I turn it down one notch in XP Pro it would go down to 27% but in Media Centre it go go down to 20% or even 15% or even worse no volume.I have tried uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling them and nothing seems to work.

Media Centre Freezing / Rebooting PC

Aug 29, 2009

My PC is playing up everytime I open Media Centre. I think it may have to do with either the BIOS update, the graphic card or the TV card. The symptoms I am experiencing is every time I watch a programme I have recorded, either it freezes 1 minute into playing the recorded programme and I have to reboot by pressing the button on the processor (ALT-CTRL-DEL doesnt work). my PC reboots by itself while watching the recorded programme but when it starts up, the Windows XP logo/startup screen has lines and it wont start i.e. the screen freezes before I can see my desktop it freezes in between watching the recorded show and the screen flashes ALT-CTRL-DEL doesnt work in any of these situations. Neither does ALT+F4. The only thing I can do it shut it down by pressing the button on the processor, but if I dont switch it off from the back of the processor and plug it out from the main socket (and leave it for 10 seconds), the start up shows lines in the screen and then it freezes when the XP logo appears. I have also did System Restore 3 times! It works for a while but its a temporary solution to my ongoing problem (only started playing up 2 days ago).

Constant Reboot Loop On Startup?

Oct 14, 2006

I had to store my PC for a couple of months due to some home renovation. Hooked it all back up yesterday, and it booted fine. Only thing out of the ordinary was a message "new hardware requires windows to restart". I figured it was my TV tuner, it's always been touchy after a complete power-down. I chose not to restart right then, and used the pc for an hour or so, then selected shut-down. It powered down, then re-booted on its own. No problem, the TV tuner causes this, I waited to get into Windows to turn the DVR function that I know causes this, but it refuses to boot! I get to the windows screen with the progress bar, and after about 15 seconds, the screen goes black and it reboots.

Reboot Loop / Error Message

Apr 22, 2007

This is kind of a long one, so please bear with me. In the last week I've been getting a lot of pop ups (almost every time i clicked a link or visited a new site) which i never used to get before. Many of them were things saying my computer was at risk and i should download such and such software, but i didn't know if they were legit so i didn't do it.Then one morning a couple days ago i woke up with the computer running the windows loading page. It took me to the password screen, i entered my password and windows started. But then once all the programs had loaded, it flashed a blue screen error, too quick to read, and then went black. Then it started loading windows again and took me back the password screen. I logged on and the same thing kept happening over and over.I started it in Safe Mode and did a full scan with my virus protection software (Symantec). It found six threats and i deleted them all. Restarted the computer but the same thing happened. I tried the disk defragmenter in Safe Mode but that didn't work either.

Finally i changed the System Config Utility in Safe Mode to diagnostic which allowed me to open windows outside of Safe Mode, but not use any programs. So i went back to the system config and turned off all the programs that i could recognize as unnecessary (AIM, Kodak, winAmp, etc) and restarted. This time windows started fine and stayed up for awhile. Just to be on the safe side i disabled the automatic restart so that if it happened again i could write down the blue screen error. After about a half hour of working fine it went to the blue screen error again.

Computer Keeps Going Into Constant A Loop Reboot.

Oct 29, 2008

I have a gateway desktop with windows xp home and it is constantly going into a reboot loop. Within 15 to 20 seconds of the computers start up it reboots itself and if left on it will continuously go into a loop. I get no blue screen flash neither, which I've heard a lot of people get with this problem. I have taken out the RAM cards and placed them in one by one seeing if RAM was the problem. It worked the first time, but after having one card in the second time it went straight back to a loop. So I crossed out RAM, I then took out my hard drive to see if it was causing the problem. I took it over to a friends house and it worked perfectly on a different PC. So that was out! I then thought maybe it was the PSU not sitting right, but it seems to be sitting fine. I cleaned my fans out as well thinking maybe it was just a simple problem. There are a so many different things that can cause this If I am correct? I just haven't the slightest of idea how to test my MOBO nor do I want to even go close to even touching it. I've also heard that WINXP service pack 2 suppously could cause this but I've just heard this. After trying everything in my personal arsenal I just did a clean reinstall of WinXP Home and everything seem to be working perfectly fine. The PC stayed on for about 2 and half hours after I installed the Wireless card then I turned it off for the night, thinking everything was fine. So I woke up to turn it on and to my surprise, it went into a reboot loop.

The loop happens when I have my usb mouse plugged in, doesn't matter which spot and no other usb device causes. Have tried multiple types/brands of mice they all cause the loop. My flash drive also causes the loop but my keyboard does not.

When I reset the CMOS the loop did not occur until I sync'd my computers time, SP3 only

Updates Caused Reboot Loop

Jul 6, 2010

So I downloaded some Windows (XP SP2) updates as usual on my Dell Dimension C521 Desktop, and after being nagged every 10 minutes to restart the computer, I finally gave in. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I tried the Recovery Console as suggested, but it wouldn't let me past the Admin Password prompt. (And besides, Microsoft says not to do that on an OEM-installed operating system. )Soon, the error message disappeared and turned into a reboot loop, going endlessly back and forth between the Dell screen and the Windows screen. I tried a Repair Installation and it looked like it was working but it just added a new screen to the loop that says: "Setup is being restarted."

PS I also heard there is a patch to solve this.. but couldn't find it..

Cdrom Nightmare

Jan 16, 2005

She has auto updates turned on for her WindowsXP Home, so when SP 2 was released she got it installed.
Since then neither CD drive has worked. So I went over last night to help her. Dell has a pretty handy little maintenance utility partition that you can access from the bootup menu. It has some little self tests and such for verifying hardware. It is able to read the drives fine, so no hardware issues there. If I boot to the recovery console, the drives will talk. But if I boot to windows I get an error code 31 in the device manager and the don't load.Prior to this morning I didn't know about the UpperFilters and LowerFilters settings that can fix this very issue. At the time I figured something had just gotten screwed up with SP2. I have an XP Home with SP2 cd, so I tried to do a repair installation.
