I've got a major problem and will be as concise as I can.XP Media Centre will not boot. When XP boots normally I get a message saying the Hive is corrupt or missing and the problem is C:systemrootsystem32configsystem with a c000000218 (sorry if wrong number of zeros). From recovery console chkdsk shows 'unrecoverable problem'; though fixmbr does seem to do something. When I try to install a fresh copy of XP MC there are no partitions shown to install to.The interesting thing is, I can boot either XP or Vista on my PC (OS' on separate HDs) and can see all the files on the C-drive and the files on other partitions on this drive from 'Computer' in Vista. So I guess the hard drive isn't faulty.
the problem was described as a non booting pc. That was it.I booted the pc to find the message ntldr missing. Did a repair of the mbr and replaced boot files. Still no luck. So i thought i'd try a live linux cd in it to see if i could work out weather it needs replacement hardware or whether it is a software error. Anyway the pc boots and i've got access to all the drives, I take this opportunity to backup the user files and also take a copy of the hidden partion (as its a packard bell pc and the recovery files are there)I've downloaded the recovery cd from packard bell but it keeps asking for master disk 1 to be placed in dvd drive (which i haven't got cos the user has not made the backup disks). What i want to know is, is it possible to make the backup discs from the files I have recovered from the hidden partition? Is it possible to write these files with nero for instance as a bootable dvd and then install like that (i haven't tried this yet because the file size is 5.5 gig and i've got no dvd 9 discs to hand)Or last resort boot these files over the network and install that way. (i've never tried this and i'm not sure i know whats involved)
Since installing SP3 my media centre will not open although the rest of XP runs fine. I get a report 'Strong name validation failed for assembly 'C:Windowsehomeehshell.exe. The file may have been tampered with or it was partially signed but not fully signed with the correct private key.I have the original installation disk from Dell, but it won't recognise the key that came with the pc to re install it. Is there any way I can repair the file in question. I have tried uninstalling sp3, and using the recovery program, but nothing is working to make it work again.
I am about to purchase an Acer Aspire 9500 for use at work on a windows 2003 server network. It will also be used shen I am traveling and at home. Does anyone know if XP Media Centre has the same functionality as XP Pro where network connectivity is concerned? Also are there any other things that I should be concerned about choosing XP Media Centre over XP Pro?
I am looking for a way of editing my media centre downloads that i have made though my media centre tv, i have tryed a few programs but none seem to do the file type there are in,
I used to be able to watch a TV programme as well as doing other things on my computer but now all i can do is listen to the TV programme as the picture does not appear on my desk top when I want to work, say, on a spreadsheet.Any ideasas to what I have done to change my original situation?
Im currently having problems with establishing a connection between my XBox 360 and my WMC PC. Here is what I have done so far.
1. Installed the expander on my PC.
2. Verified the code on XBox and PC.
3. Checked WMC version, and all is upto date
4. On XBox gone to Windows Media Centre and it comes up with "Windows Media Centre contacting" with a progress bar.
That page stays on for about 15/20 secs and then I get a message on the XBox saying "Another user or application on the Windows Media Centre-based PC has disconnected this device."I have read several topics on forums and microsoft support pages but all the things I have tried have failed. I have also tried just using Media Player 11 using it's sharing media options but it does not detect the XBox at all. However my laptop does. All programs which could affect eg: Firewalls, Decoders etc have been Uninstalled.
Trying to do the above with the 2 original Microsoft Media Centre install disks. It asks for disk 2 but says it is the wrong disk.Is this the fact that SP 3 is on the computer, and do I need to slip stream SP3 onto the Media Centre disks, and if so, do I do it on both ?
Everytime I try and schedule a TV recording in Media Centre (freeview) on my PC, this message appears. If I click on OK to terminate it, it generates a crash error report. I always submit the reports but its not helping the situation. If I click cancel to debug it, this message appears. Can anyone shed some light into why I maybe experiencing this issues? I havent had any problems before like this but I recently changed my broadband provider to Talk Talk but I am very unhappy with the preformance and strength on my wireless network so Im going back to BT
After a virus (w32.licum) I was enable to restart my computer. Every time I'm trying to login with my password, the computer automatically goes as if I was pressing the log off and ask me again for the password. What is my problem?
If I use XP Pro my Logitech Elite keyboard volume control knob turns the volume up and down smoothly regardless of if I am gaming etc but when I use the keyboard in XP Media Centre the volume control becomes very jerky and virtually uncontrollable. For instance it will be at 30% but if I turn it down one notch in XP Pro it would go down to 27% but in Media Centre it go go down to 20% or even 15% or even worse no volume.I have tried uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling them and nothing seems to work.
My PC is playing up everytime I open Media Centre. I think it may have to do with either the BIOS update, the graphic card or the TV card. The symptoms I am experiencing is every time I watch a programme I have recorded, either it freezes 1 minute into playing the recorded programme and I have to reboot by pressing the button on the processor (ALT-CTRL-DEL doesnt work). my PC reboots by itself while watching the recorded programme but when it starts up, the Windows XP logo/startup screen has lines and it wont start i.e. the screen freezes before I can see my desktop it freezes in between watching the recorded show and the screen flashes ALT-CTRL-DEL doesnt work in any of these situations. Neither does ALT+F4. The only thing I can do it shut it down by pressing the button on the processor, but if I dont switch it off from the back of the processor and plug it out from the main socket (and leave it for 10 seconds), the start up shows lines in the screen and then it freezes when the XP logo appears. I have also did System Restore 3 times! It works for a while but its a temporary solution to my ongoing problem (only started playing up 2 days ago).
i've gotta phillips mt1600 running on windows xp media centre 2005 edition and one day i tried to turn my pc on but it got to the point of loading up just before it shows the users and it rebooted, i do not know why? And if left to its own devices would do this all day, i've tried booting from cdrom drive and no joy but i've lost my recovery disk and really in a muddle as i'm basically computer novice any ideas what i can do to fix this i don't care about losing everything i just wanna start from scratch, my friend has windows 7 disk for me to install but i don't know how to remove my windows to be able to install windows 7.
I am building a new system soon and need advice on which version of XP I should use. My system will use an AM2 processor athlon64 and an Asus M2N-E motherboard. However in the future I may get a dual core CPU. Does Media Centre Edition support dual core?Is it worth running 64bit XP?Are there any differences in performance between the different versions?
I am unable to boot my PC most of the times.Whenever I switch on my PC,I see the following message nine ot of ten times. DiskError/Boot Faliure Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot media in selected boot device If I press enter after this messages & keep pressing following messages appear from time to time (Not simultaneously). If just after making the switch on, I press F2 key to check the boot device preference
If just after making the switch on , I press f11 key to reach the boot menu I always find the 1.44 MB Floppy option highlighted as the booting choice.(though there had not been any floppy in the floppy drive, I dont have any really)I make the hard disk option highlighted & it solves the problem only a few times. But next time when I try F11 key to check the boot menu again I find 1.44 MB floppy highlighted.
I haven't installed anything new on my computer but today after having my computer shipped to me via UPS I cut on my computer and where the XP load bar screen was I got: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".Seeing this I knew I went into the BIOS setup and tried to turn the system priority to look at the HDD. Instead I only had the option of the DVD drive and the CD drive.I have no idea how to solve this problem and don't have any of the recovery CD's. I DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT because like a bad little boy I did not backup my 4 years worth of work.
After I log into my computer at my windows login screen, it instantly kicks me back to the login screen. After reading several posts online I have come to believe that my userinit.exe file has been deleted or that virus has somehow altered it. I want to reinstall a copy of the file from a windows xp media boot CD, however I only have a friends recovery disk and it is for his brand of computer so it doesnt recognize it when i boot my system. I dont have a floppy drive, is there any other way to get a dos prompt at start-up so I can manually extract userinit.exe to system32? Should I slave the drive on a different computer and copy and paste it? Windows XP Media Center Edition (SP2)
I recently WIPED 160GB HDD in the laptop, then Fresh Reinstalled Windows XP Media Center Edition. I even deleted Dell's "partion" on the drive. When I bootup, I get TWO (2) options to boot into, but BOTH say: "Windows XP Media Center Edition" and "Windows XP Media Center Edition" However only the TOP one will allow me to bootup.
When I click on the Bottom option, I get the following: Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. I do however want to create a DUAL, or even TRIPLE Boot so I can install a Linux distro, Windows Vista RC1 Beta, and Media Center XP....
I had a old computer given to me, (and I mean old, fixed it up just to do email and do letters etc, doubt it would cope with anything else) anyway I got it going and managed to load the OS on to it, (XP Pro) checked and all drivers where present so XP Pro had all the drivers (shows how old the mother board is) anyway before installing service packs etc I went to turn some bells and whistles off and configure settings as I like them. (This computer has not yet been connected to the Internet, I have not even put an Ethernet cord into it yet, so not a virus) I go into the Control Panel and there is no security centre icon there, this is the first time I have come across this. I have searched the net but only articles or forum entries I have come across have been for if malware or other nasties had been removed and then noticed the icon missing, so this does not apply to me as its a fresh install, and this computer has not been connected yet.
Ideas running through my head is maybe updating drivers, or something to do with the bios, going to check the hard drive itself tomorrow, a bit hesitant to try things unless I know its going to help other than this everything seems to be opening and closing as per usual. It just amazes me with all the installs I have done (in the hundreds +) and this is the first time I have had this happenAny ideas will be much appreciated, oh and have not loaded anything else on yet, its just the basic OS, decided not to go any further with installing of anything else till I have sorted this
I've read similar posts on this subject on the net and on techguy, but I've never found anything that seems to work.I have a Gateway computer running MS XP media center edition Operating system purchased sometime around the summer of 05.It had been running perfectly fine, well, almost perfectly fine, until just recently it decided that it did not want to start up. At first it was internittant and could be solved by turning the computer on and off along with playing with the powerstrip, now these methods have failed tend the computer refuses to boot up at all
After the most recent updates to McAfee Security Centre, I have been unable to locate the part of this security package where cookies where listed ie. there was a list of sites from which cookies were allowed or blocked. It was available through the Advanced menu of the Internet Section but it is not there anymore.Prior to this update, I was prompted whenever I went into a new website if I wanted to allow or block cookies. If I wanted to change this at a later date, I could go into the cookie blocking section of McAfee and change it to either block or allow and there were two separate lists of the allow cookies sites, or the block cookies sites.I understand I can adjust cookie blocking via Internet Explorer but this McAfee function let me choose as I entered individual sites.I have been in contact with 3 McAfee technicians who dont seem to know what I am asking and my Security Centre has been scanned via the McAfee tool and there are no faults in it.
Can anyone help I keep getting annoying popup windows when connected online these have the heading Message Centre and are usually advertising anti spyware and other things they popup every few seconds (ooopppsss there goes another one) I have had this in the past and some how managed to switch off these message centre popups but cant remember how I did it can anyone help its driving me mad.
I cannot access the help/support centre, or look at services or user accounts. I get a window that says, there is a an Internet explorer Script error on this page, do you want to continue to run scripts yes or no.
Having recently had someone else using my computer for a while, installing various software (like winamp and SubEdit player) it seems windows media player (that's what I use) no longer recognises the usual files as media files like .mp3 .wmv .m3u .avi etc etc so when I click open file and select "media files (all types)" in the file type box it shows nothing, so I have to change it to all files which is irritating. Media player still plays everything fine but this is pretty annoying.
each time i try and error message appears: "gdiplus.dll is missing".what can i do to fix the problem? iv already tried downloading the software from the microsoft website but the same message came up.iv also searched my pc for the gdipus.dll file and loads come up!
I get this every time I try to open a media file even when I click "always use selected program" This just started happening a few days ago after I ran a bunch of registry cleaners.
I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:? Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation? Thank you, Al
My Windows Secuirty Centre is still detecting an old AV program as up-to-date and active even though its no longer installed... same with the firewall is there any way of resetting the security centre or where in the registry can i find the entrys to modify?
