I have lost the product code for my Windows XP installation CD.Is there anything I can do?
I have a machine which was returned by a customer. He said "it just stopped working." To make a long story short, I tried doing a system repair from another Windows disc. Everything seemed to be going fine until asked for the product code. I used the code on the label on the machine. It sees it as invalid. Is this because I did a repair with a different copy of Windows? Would I have to do a complete reinstall with the different Windows disc? Can I recover this without wiping out the harddrive?
View 8 Replies View RelatedDuring the past month, I've installed additional RAM and installed several updates in 2 Dell Dimension desktops that are 3 - 4 years old. The owners of thse desktops live several miles apart and do not know each other. Both of them ordered their desktop by phone from Dell. I discovered by accident that both computers have the same 25-digit product code for the Windows XP SP2 operating system. Is this normal for a computer company to do this, or is it just a fluke?

I went on for a 1 month vacation at our province, when I came home everything in my place was clean, the dust, the trash and even the sticker for my windows Xp Home edition. I know It's also my fault, I should have placed the sticker at my CPU, though I still have my cd for the xp home edition, the question is can I retrieve it from the Microsoft?

View 8 Replies View RelatedSomething went wrong with my version of XP on one of my hard drives. It boots up asks if I want to start windows normally, then just crashes. Thus, I tried XP on my other hard drive. It boots up then asks me to activate it. I lost my product key, and cannot re-activate it. I cannot load any key-finder programs because I cannot access windows. I am completely clueless as to how to re-activate. I don't believe it's a pirated copy, but it won't let me activate.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt looks I lost my booklet with the instalation code for my computer system. I bought my HP Pavilion a1012x 2 years ago. I created emergency, recovery dvd as instructed at that time. It looks I missplaced the code for the installation of it(can't find it anywhere). I wanted to clean my hard disc due to the fact that my comp has become very slow. I think reinstallation of the system would be the best solution as I tried for virus search, registry reparation, creating new recovery points, removing some programs but all without result. Is there any chance and way to recover my installation code from my computer now in order to reinstall my operating system from my emergency dvd? I have been using this hack www.tomshardware.com for some time quite happily then installed winxp sp3 and it lost my mirrored array. I attempted to re apply the hack and no joy. Luckily i could break the mirror and i have access to my data on a single drive.
I downloaded a program tilled MS PowerToys from MS's website. I installed the program and ran it. I was attempting to set the program to allow me to bypass the startup screen (the screen that asks for your password and asks you which user accout you want to use). I did this because I only had one user, and had no password. But when I would boot it still made me click on the users name.
So in Powertoys I selected Logon, Autologon. I then checked the box "automatically logon at system startup". It asked me to create a password, so I created a password..
I went to install nero 7 ultra. then i realized I didnt have enough space for the whole install. I hit cancel at some point in the install and lost about a gig. My laptop has like no free room

For quite a while now, whenever my system tries to install the latest version of Win Media Player, most of the installation happens and then I get an error message saying the installation wasn't completed and that I must log on as administrator. Since I am the adminstrator, I guess I've somewhere along the line lost my administrator rights.

My wallpaper has disappeared even though it appears under display properities-themes. Under the desktop tab my wallpaper is set correctly. When I try to change the theme from modified theme to windows classic the change is not accepted. My screensaver was the picture slideshow and is now windows xp moves across the screen as the screensaver. When I try to change it back the change is not accepted.
This all started because I am trying to back up my computer to an external hard drive and keep getting error message "windows delay write failed". I tried updating the hard disk driver but there wasn't any update. While searching for fixes for that problem, I came across Panda Software online virus checker. I used it and it deleted a few viruses. They were all old, some may have only been unopened email attachments and they were all from 2001 and 2002. Two days later, I was using logmein - remote access and while rebooting (not the first reboot) I got the blue screen. Here's the error message.
Driver_IRQL_not _less_or_equal

VSDATANT.SYS - address F398B203 base at F3966000, Datestamp 4313a6c6
So I looked up vsdatant.sys which is located in system32 directory, and I changed the name of the driver to vsdatant.old but then my zonealarm stopped working so I changed it back.
How do I get my display working properly? Any ideas on the "write failed" error message?
I have burned some photos onto a CD -R and have gone back into the cd drive but they are missing!! where have they gone. The photos were definitely burned on. I thought that once on a cd nothing could be lost.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedHave some strange problem that nags me every so often. when i boot up the computer i will periodically get a bsod with "bugcode_usb_driver" listed as the cause. I suspect it may be from some webcam i had tried to install, though i thought i had deleted everything. The error only shows up every so often randomly, and then sometimes when i do certain things. For instance, I disabled startup item Navcpl which i believe is norton antivirus (which just came with the computer, im using another program). the computer would not boot up until i went in in safe mode and reenabled it. Yesterday I partitioned my hd using a linux program (though linux is not yet installed, just a cd boot), and since then windows keeps asking me to do run a disk check when i boot up. if i skip it i will boot up fine, but if i let it run, i will count down to about 2 seconds (from 10 that it gives you to skip) and then give me the bsod. very strange.unfortunately the problem had started a long time ago, so i cant do a system restore (i thought i had solved the problem a while ago, but like i said every so often i would get the error on boot, i had been keeping my computer on for long times and so i didnt notice it).googling and checking the forums have turned up nothing. i saw some solutions online and on microsofts site about the same driver error, but under different circumstances, nothing like the problem im having.

View 6 Replies View RelatedA friend installed his copy of XP on my machine many months ago. I already had my own license for XP at that point, but as a matter of convenience at the time, we installed his copy. Now as you know, MS won't supply automatic updates anymore, because they think I have a stolen copy of XP. Technically correct, but realistically, not quite that bad. How do I tell the operating system my correct license code? Will I need to reinstall the OS, or can it be done with less fuss?
