My OS is XP Pro. For quite a while now, whenever my system tries to install the latest version of Win Media Player, most of the installation happens and then I get an error message saying the installation wasn't completed and that I must log on as administrator. Since I am the adminstrator, I guess I've somewhere along the line lost my administrator rights.

Please see system admin to install realplayer." I tried checking the install and uninstall file to make sure the read is unchecked, I looked for previous versions of software to remove and In safe mode as Administrator and also created a new administrator and still cannot download software due to same issue. I rebooted and restarted the computer several times.

This time I decided to try and restore policies and get rid of the virus by hand... but I couldn't find a guide telling how to get these policies back! Has anyone created a guide or done this before? Using this account, I used to be able to install, uninstall etc. A week or so ago, I noticed that I was no longer able to uninstall anything using this account. The problem is that whenever I login as an administrator or even make a new user with administrator rights or assign an existing user as an administrator and login, the computer reaches the desktop and then restarts. Then it runs scandisk. After successfully running scandisk, it comes to the login screen and the moment I login, same thing repeats. However, if I change the administrator rights of another user to Guest or something, it works fine.

When I boot up, my desktop is blank except for the desktop background. In other words, no icons, no start menu, start up programs don’t load, etc. At one point, I got this error:
"Windows cannot find '/idlist, :400:2196,c:'. Make sure you typed the name correcttly, and then try again ..."
(I haven't been able to replicate this error, though. It showed up once.)
I recently downloaded "teakui" to remove email details on loggin page. I use Incredimail as my email programme, this is now not my default programme and it will not let me change it. It says "you need administrator or power user privileges in order to set it"

The thing is, he got it from this old school, and he needs administrative control as right now, he can do almost nothing. He cant contact the school, and I tried looking for some password resetting or something but nothing.I just searched through almost all 50 topics of the "I lost my administrative password" topics, hoping to find an answer, and I did, but now I need help with that. I downloaded the CD version from my computer, extracted it, and burned the .iso file onto the cd. I put in the cd in the laptop, and nothing happened. So I rebooted, and nothing happened. I tried to open it, but it doesnt work with anything, so now it opens with Notepad, which doesn't do anything.

View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen me and my wife moved in with her parents to help take care of her father.When he passed I was givin his computer wich was left on and password protected.What I did was create another user account as an administrater and demoted him to just a user figuring that would allow me to remove his password.I forgot to bump him back up to administrator before I deleted the other user and now I am stuck with only 1 account and it has no administrator rights.I do not have the windows XP disk either =/ I would like to change the account back to administrator and retain the files as well.

I have been using this hack www.tomshardware.com for some time quite happily then installed winxp sp3 and it lost my mirrored array. I attempted to re apply the hack and no joy. Luckily i could break the mirror and i have access to my data on a single drive.
I downloaded a program tilled MS PowerToys from MS's website. I installed the program and ran it. I was attempting to set the program to allow me to bypass the startup screen (the screen that asks for your password and asks you which user accout you want to use). I did this because I only had one user, and had no password. But when I would boot it still made me click on the users name.
So in Powertoys I selected Logon, Autologon. I then checked the box "automatically logon at system startup". It asked me to create a password, so I created a password..
I went to install nero 7 ultra. then i realized I didnt have enough space for the whole install. I hit cancel at some point in the install and lost about a gig. My laptop has like no free room
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a friend that has a computer with an illegal version, i told to resolve it with microsoft, or he can backup the data neeed and do a new installation, well guess waht he did a new installation w/o backup, so actually he lost applications and data, question:it is possible with any recovery utility for hd to recover at least the documents from ms word and the email messages and address book from outlook express, even when this hd already have a new win xp prom ? is there a software that will be able to recover evrything that was on the hd, i really doubt it but maybe there is a posiblity
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently was reinstalling windows xp pro . after the fresh install i tried to connect to the internet nothing happened. went to the device manager and apparently the the PC wasn't reading the ethernet controller. so i went home to the dell support to download the necessary drivers needed. i even called dell to make sure i was doing the right thing. needless to say it still does not work... i opened up the CPU to try and find the actual name of the ethernet card and could not. there was a small metal box where you put the ethernet cable into. i did not see a card, yet i know there is one. sorry if I'm confusing. its a dell 8300 with no service code or service tag on it. i check inside and out
