I'm upgrading my kids home computer with new MB, memory, and video card. After installing the new parts do you think I could install the old HD and boot in safe-mode to install the new drivers. I know this is lazy but I just hate the idea of reinstalling all the other crapola they have on this computer.
View 2 RepliesI bought all required computer parts and I'm assembling these together to build my brand new desktop system. I assembled all the parts and I'm trying to install the XP Home OS. Every time I try to do this, my system is behaving strangely. After the partitioning and formatting is completed, it threw an error saying C drive is corrupted. I restarted my system and started installing OS again. This time also I went thru' paritioning and formatting and it didn't complain the previous error. Now it failed while doing the setup saying it couldn't copy so and so file. I repeated the process again and now it complained it couldn't copy some other file. I tried this 5 to 6 times and each time, it complained a new different file that it couldn't copy and one of those I remember is appender.exe. Sometimes, it's not even recognizing the hard drive. It's saying that couldn't find hard drive on my system. I went thru' BIOS settings and everything looks cool.
View 5 Replies View RelatedEverything has been fine with my 3 and a half year old ADVENT PC, and I've been successful in upgrading parts such as DVD Drives, adding extra RAM and installing my new graphics card.However, in the past few days, when I boot up my PC, it stops at what I believe the DOS screen (part with BOOT FROM CD etc.) and will say A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. This happens 2/3 of the times I turn on the PC.Also, if I do press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and the PC restart, it is normally successful, and will boot up Windows perfectly. Just this morning, it gave me the error, and with 2 Ctrl+Alt+Delete restarts, it's working perfectly, hence I can type this.

His start menu shows all the icons for programs but under some things like My Computer, and some others, there is no text or title text. On Facebook, you can see a person's picture on the feed, but no name. In Firefox, with new tabs, it doesn't show what the tab titles are. Control panel too also shows all icons and no title.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my system. I've narrowed down the problem, to one of my storage drives. It has 2 partitions, E & F. I have 3 AT100 IDE HD's(One XP Boot drive, & Two Storage Drives). And a CDRW/DVD Combo Drive. Everything was working fine when they were all mounted on the Primary & Secondary IDE Controller. I tried to defrag one of the partitions of E&F Drive,...and Disk Defrag locked up shortly after it started. I had to End Task,...and eventually it stopped. Thought nothing of it,...and proceded to try and mount that drive on the Via Raid Controller on my mobo. It Can be used as Non-Raid IDE Controller. Then I found that windows xp would only boot if I disabled the Via Controller. When the Via Controller was Enabled,...I would get Stop 0x00000024 Error BSOD. This is the controller that the problematic HD was mounted to.
When I try to boot in Safe Mode,..I get Stop 0x00000050 Error BSOD. So I then booted from XP Home CD, and went into Recovery Console. I did CHKDSK /r/p on all drives. The E&F Drive would get this error; "One or more Unrecoverable Parts found". Or something like that. Is there anything else I can try to get my HD to work without formatting? Just to clarify,...This is NOT the HD with XP installed. It is an extra Storage Drive. And everything was working perfectly fine untill Disk Defrag locked up. And I tried mounting that drive on a different IDE Controller embedded in my mobo.
I have had windows XP Pro installed, updated and running fine until about a week ago. I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.

I'm okay with that, because I have files on other machines and reinstall any programs that I need My question is reference to drivers being deleted and needing to be reinstalled. OK, so I've put up with all the "non-genuine" reminders from Redmond figuring it was my penance, but now I'm thinking I should move on up to Vista (mainly for Media Center). And yes, the hardware is up to it.

I had a major crash and had to reinstall my Windows XP SP2, so I have had to reinstall most of my programs. Now whenever I load Excel, it takes a minute to "install excel features". I would think one install of whatever features it is installing would be sufficient. View 3 Replies View RelatedI install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!

while trying to fix another problem, by repairing WP on an Averatec 3200, the Install went into the actual install mode, rather than the repair mode. As I don't have the security key (someone who will go un-named, but I have my suspicions, threw away the plastic CD holder with the key taped to the back) I can't continue the install and I can't get the install off the computer. The reason that I was trying to repair is that I have the Log-on Virus which makes it impossible to log on and do anything about the virus. Can't even get to SAFE mode to try to remove the virus with Spyware Doctor.

HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a fresh copy of windows XP sp2 on 2 machines. Both Dell Optiplex desktops. Usually it prompts that it has found new hardware for each device it hasn't found drivers for. Device manager lists them with a yellow exclamation icon.Problem I have now though is that the fresh install of XP does not show these prompt at all, although device manager lists them and if i go in there and update driver the device works.The problem I have is that basically i usually copy a driver heirarchy to the systemdrive and point the registry at them, which results in automatic installation on boot. This no longer works and I assume they are related as it doesn't look like it's automatically trying to install these devices.Is there a setting somewhere, seems very strange, what with it being a fresh install?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.
