Using explorer to search through the temp internet folders, I find there are a few files that are not being deleted. About 30 of them are named "size=1x1&name=ATAtracker..etc.etc..gif" at 1KB in size. In another folder also under the Temporary Internet Files | Content.IE5, is a file "makeplaylist.dll%3F....etc.etc..asx". In another folder 2 files from a Playstation 2 website both filenames starting with "Network=ugo&size=....etc.etc..html". There are more folders yet, but this serves as enough. The right click on the filename does not render the delete option. Depressing the keyboard delete button does not cause the file to delete nor even bring up the confirmation window for deleting. Trying to delete the folder(s) themselves, even in Safe Mode brings up a message saying "Cannot delete Size_1~1.gif. Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename." In folder attributes, there is the read only option to check or uncheck.
I am trying to reinstall Address Book from a backup CD. I get the following message when I click on Address Book in the backup CD. "The Address Book file has been locked by another application. Please close other application and try again." I don't know what application the note os refering to.
i can't open my desktop folders including shortcuts..when I go to start, i can only open recenlty used programs but not my documents, my computer, control panel & all the tabs on the right field...also when I close a program, the window display still remains on the desktop.by left clicking the current program window i'm using and dragging it around, i can sort of erase the previously used windows.i can only correct this by restarting xp.do i have a virus? pls give me step by step guide to fix this.
I have a laptop that runs Windows XP. Recently I opened it and an error message that says that the computer is locked and only the administrator can log on appeared. But, I'm the administrator of the computer! It is not apart of any network so no one else was using it.The keyboard is also locked so I can't type anything.
I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and changed the icon, clicked ok, blah blah. However, now whenever I open a folder, it instead opens the default "Search" thing.
So I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and added a new thing called "open", to open with "explorer.exe".
Now the folder opens, however when I double click a folder within that, rather than it opening in the same window, it opens in a new window!!
And no, this is not the setting in Folder Options that selects between the two. It is alerady set to open in same window. I've gone through all the other settings in Folder Options.
2 days ago, I used add/remove programs then Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton AV, and replaced it with AVG Free. My PC seemed to work fine until yesterday: upon booting, AVG automatically tried to update and ended up reporting "something bad happened..."; Not sure if AVG issue is relevant but now I CANNOT OPEN FOLDERS or APPS!
Now about 9 times out of 10, when I try to open a file or app, the screen icons and background pic disappear momentarily, and nothing opens. If I manage to open a folder, it seems my PC hangs up similarly at the following task (sometimes I get my RCA Lyra icon suddenly showing up in the toolbar). BTW I experienced the exact same problem a couple of times before the AVG install but rebooting would always fix the issue. Not anymore! It took many reboots but I was able to get AdAware to run - found nothing - and Maintenance Mechanic 6 - showed PC Repair is needed but hangs once it gets to reading the disk index. I tried deleting Lyra, but it won't let me (hangs once I manage to open the add/remove program page).
While trying to add a DOS prompt to the Folder context menu. I seem to have inadvertently broken/deleted something in the registry.Whenever I now open a folder, it always opens in a new window, irrespective of the folder settings (in tools).
I cant open any of my file folders. I cant even open the explorer to explore the folders. I cant think of any changes I have made to the computer lately. Also, windows update popped up earlier this morning with service pack 3 so I told it to update...at the end of installation it told me that access was denied and uninstalled what it had done..not sure what that was all about either.
I can't open multiple files and folders, but my little registry hack Copy To, and Move To (info about it here: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-6115665.html) opens up instead. I tried deleting those, but then nothing happens if I try to open multiple files or folders. I don't know when this happened, because I rarely open more than one file/folder simultaneosly.
when I would open up folders and Windows Explorer would have an error message and then it would refresh my computer and close all Windows Explorer Window(s). Ive researched quite a bit in my spare time in the past two days and found that it could be related to ntdll.dll. But in my research I haven't really found any solutions, yet it almost seems like a common/uncommon problem.
I have done a few system restores all of which were unable to return to a previous state. I am up to date on the latest virus/spyware/adware definitions and ran scans using: Norton Internet Security 2007, Spy Sweeper, AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Stinger......
shortly after rebooting I find the desktop folders do not open. At first they work fine, then after a few minutes the hour glass appears for about 10 seconds when folder is clicked. Then the hour glass goes out and nothing happens.
I am using XP and would like to know how to make My Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin and Control Panel open in full screen as all other items do. It really annoys me that they open in a small screen meaning I have to maximise them every time I open them.
I tried the tip launch folders as separate process. I uninstall IE7 but the problem's still there. Windows seems to reset, but I can carry on working. The toolbar at the bottom disappears for a few moments and the icons reload, minus any open folders. It may have happened a couple of times without open folders, I'm not sure. Sometimes it hangs completely and I have to reboot.
Go in to my documents and open a folder the button or icon is missing so that I cannot go one back to the previous folder. Instead what i have to do is close the document down completely and then reopen it to the point I need to be at. I don't know what i have done but before say i was in a MY DOCUMENTS then i went in MUSIC then say ELVIS the icon is missing so i would not be able to go back to MUSIC instaed I would have to closed it down and go back to MY DOCUMENTS then MUSIC then say PAUL MCCARTNEY.
Heres what happened I wanted to change system wide folders Icons so I went into Folder Options>File Types>File Folders >>Advanced and attempted to changes the icons in doing so somthing went wrong and now when I double click on any folder (except hard-drives and My Documents) it will open up in the command prompt. I must right click and select OPEN for it to work.
I love the Windows Explorer Document Tree View and I am so lazy that it bothers me to switch to the view each time I open a new window. Is there a way to set the default view to open folders with the document tree showing?I have tried switching it to the classic view, but that doesn't have the versatility of the full document tree. And, as another article has suggested, I added /e to my My Documents shortcut target, but that didn't help either.
I changed a setting on the folders options to allow me to see program file extensions on power point files. After I did this, I tried to open a folder in my documents. Instead of opening the folder, it opened a search que. Now I can not get windows to open the folder instead of a search que. how to fix it?
I'm set up to run folder windows in a separate instance of Explorer for better stability. But When I close all the windows for the second instance of Explorer, the process frequently does not terminate. So then when I try to open another folder window, nothing happens. I have to quit Explorer manually to get it working again. This has happened several times now, and I'm getting tired of it. I'm running XP MCE 2002 Edition, all the latest updates.
When I double click using the left mouse button on a file or folder, the file or folder does not open. Instead the search window comes up. This has just happened recently. Right clicking on the mouse gives me the option of opening the file or folder.
i was wondering if anyone can give me a hand with what i think is a virus.everytime i go to open a folder (my computer, my documents, c drive etc.) my curser goes to the waiting stage for about a second, then nothing comes up. i push trl+alt+delete, to bring up task manager, and when i try to open the folders, it tells me, in processes, that a program called "drwtsn32.exe" is running, and i think that is what is not letting me open my folders. could anyone tell me how to get rid of it, so i can get rid of ANOTHER virus.
Is there a way to open desktop folders at a specific time? Is there a way to make specific icons bigger, brighter, or in some other way make them stand out.
I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.
I have Windows XP Pro and Office 2003. Whenever I use Windows Explorer or do "File-Open" on Office, for some folders I see the "Details" view, for others when I click on them the "Tiles" view, etc. Is there any way to force it to say "Details" view for all programs and folders?
As an fyi ... I'm on Windows XP and email through MS Office Outlook. My computer was working fine until we suffered 2 power surges within minutes of each other today. The tv, stereo, phone & fax are fine. My computer powers on and the first error message appears: winlogon.exe - unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because sfc_os.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Next, I try to go into 1 of 3 email accounts. First error message here: Unable to open your default email folders.
After a format and opening My Computer which i have set to open as Explorer and selecting the view to List, i click tools>folder options>view > apply to all folders, then i change the my computer folder to view details but the thing is My computer shows detail but all other folders remain in icons. Why won't they be in List? I uploaded a 2 screens First one of how one of how everyother folder looks like the Second My Computer looks like when clicking on My Computer. Now after setting the option in My computer for view clicking tools>folder options>view tab>apply to all folders. XP Media Centre. When I click My Documents the folder list appears but will not open any when clicked. Also cannot open My Computer. Control Panel opens and list appears but cannot open some folders such as Add/Remove Programs. Also, I.E. will not start. However programs such as Word will start OK, and will open some files.
I try to open any folder from the desktop, or explorer(right click start button), or my documents, they don't open, but program shortcuts seem to work. Once inside a program I can navigate to and open folders I couldn't do previousy on desktop. It seems just an error when on the desktop itself.
My wallpaper vanishes and the active desktop recovery screen appears telling me to restore the desktop after somekind of windows error.
