Recently, my windows address book (Documents & Settings/User/Apps/Microsoft/Address Book) has stopped working on my Windows XP SP2 desktop. The *.wab file is in the proper place and is of the right size but when I open it using Outlook Express or simply by clicking on the file itself, it opens empty and, at the same time, creates a new file name in the Address Book folder which uses the first 6 letters of the actual file name. On this same computer, with another address book, this shortened file name does not appear and the address file opens properly. It only occurs with one particular address book file.
Assuming the *.wab file was corrupted, I copied in a backup file to replace the corrupted address book file. The backup was made at a time when the address book was working properly. Unfortunately, the backup file demonstrated the same behavior, opening empty and showing the shortened file name.I then copied the original address book and the backup copy to another computer and found they both opened empty and both created the 2nd file name. On that same computer, other address book files open properly. At this point, an address book file, from my backup, which was working fine at the time the backup was made now fails and does so on two different computers.Other address book files open normally on both computers.I am at a loss and do not know how to recover the contents of the original address file.

created an identity on Windows XP for each of my parents. Tried to set it up where Outlook Express could be used identically from both identities, but could not. Used the Import/Export from OE to attempt to send the address book and messages to other identity, and now they aren't found in either identity's OE program. When I tried to import the address book back into main identity's OE, an error message stated that it won't retrieve that folder

I keep my OS and data on separate drives, so all of my emails are still there, my account settings and address book should be as well. Importing everything into the new install of Firefox was a piece of cake. Everything, even the last sites I had open, imported without any issues. Outlook Express is proving more ... annoying. Microsoft's support site explains how to create new profiles, switch between those new profiles... none of which I need to do. I need to import my old Identity, from my data drive, into Outlook Express 6. I don't mean import the messages (there's not even room for them on the new partition), I just need to link the existing identity on the data drive to the new XP / Outlook Express installation.

When trying to install SP3 I get the error "The file c:windowssystem32driversusbstor.sys is open or in use by another application." I know that usbstor.sys is something like the service that prevents USB drives from auto-installing or auto-running, but isn't that completely irrevelent if I'm just trying to install SP3?Anyway, I've pretty much tried closing all other apps, and even tried to install in safe mode;

I am unable to open any hyperlink or any website that is contained in my microsoft outlook email.I get the following error messages.
"Windows cannot open this file. Windows needs to know what program created it"
It gives me two choices: 1. use the web to find the program that created it or 2. select from a list. None of these options work. I hope that someone can help solve this problem as I am now unable to open any link or web contained in the email.

I finally completely crashed my computer because of my inability to accept my computer knowledge level. The Geek Squad sent a nice young man and I'm $350 lighter (plus the $75.00 I used to buy a back up external hard drive a few days after the Geek repair). He saved my pictures and my large I-Tunes library and he fixed the computer. He says it's a solid machine (Sony VAIO, over 1 Gb, 5 years old, don't know any more info) and it probably has a few more years in it. I lost all my programs, but most were free. AVG and Adobe were very cool in giving me new licenses to download programs that I had purchased very recently.
Anyway, I don't know how much of that is relevant accept that the Geek guy messed me up with my default browser. We specifically talked in detail about what I use and what programs I had. AOL has been my e-mail address since AOL started. Everyone, business and otherwise has the address so it is what I use for e-mail only. For a browser I almost totally use Mozilla, although I've been playing a little bit with Opera lately. The problem is that the kid made AOL my default browser. Every time I type a web address in Mozilla or Opera AOL pops open. It even pops open when I'm not in a browser. It states that it is opening because it is set as the default browser. Mozilla told me how to change that, but when I went to the Internet Properties area I saw that the kid didn't even list Mozilla. He put AOL as default. He listed Opera, Outlook Express (which I've never used) and MSN (they must pay these guys a commission because I had all kinds of Microsoft programs I've had to remove). I'm sure that I had something listed as my default browser before but it never did this. I can't find a place to type in or somehow add Mozilla. Can anyone help? Sorry this is so long for what is hopefully not a big problem.

I am having problems whenever I leave my computer for more than a couple of hours. When I come back to it, it is sluggish or completely frozen and has to be rebooted. Then I am having trouble with only certain web sites running extremely slowly while most others run normally in IE7.As for my computer, it is 2 1/2 years old.It is a Gateway 3 GHz with 1 GB RAM, running XP Media Center.I also have an HP 3GHz with 2GB RAM with XP Media Center that I try to keep running for my husband, and a whole room full of ancient obsolete machines dating all the way back to windows 95.The HP is only 6 months old refurb. The two are networked together with a Netgear wireless router using the wired ports and Cox broadband access. They are firewalled behind the router and additionally, using Zone Alarm Pro.I am running the full suite of Zone Alarm security products including firewall virus protection and spyware removal tool on both.In addition I am running Webroot spyware removal tool on both and AOL spyware removal tool (which is due to expire soon.)All utilities run daily on both machines separately.Automatic updates for Windows is enabled on the HP because my husband can't be bothered with updates. On the Gateway I have the alerts enabled with the option to download and install windows updates at my discretion.
About two months ago, despite all the security software I have in place, two Trojans were discovered in the Gateway machine.Stupid me, instead of leaving them in quarantine, I deleted them, taking out a piece of my boot sector where they must have embedded themselves. It was telling me that the NTLDR file was missing among other things.I had been guilty of not doing regular backups and had an enormous amount of data on my hard drive.I had already purchased a large external storage unit including auto backup software with good intentions and then put it in the closet unopened for several months to be dealt with at a later date.At the first hint of trouble before deleting the Trojans I quickly dumped my documents and photos into my husbands computer, and just in time because I could not even boot into safe mode after I lost boot capability, and the machine was stuck in a continuous restart cycle.
I disabled the restart on boot failure option in setup and tried the System Restore option to try and repair the windows files, but it would not allow me to choose the non destructive restore option. It kept warning me that all my files would be deleted and gave me no other option than to say OK. Then at that point I would have to shut down the machine to get out of that screen and avoid starting the restore. I have an XP pro upgrade version disk that I purchased a few years back, but I can never get the files to all copy correctly for a clean windows install and I didn't know if it would repair a windows installation that had a restore partition loaded on the same hard drive.

I recently reloaded windows xp from scratch in a 2004 dell inspiron laptop using Dell cd's. It was working fine with sp2, but later I added sp3 and now computer takes about 5 minutes to open an application (anything from MSOffice apps to web browsers to anything else. After it finally comes up, it works slow but doable.
I would like to know what are the things I should be looking at that could be slowing the process so much. Is sp3 related? I'd rater not remove sp3 since all the applications were loaded after sp3 was installed

I have a massive amount of added planes, scenery, textures gauges etc and would hate to loose it all and have to reload the original. The files are to big to backup so I hope that there is a way to repair the fault address item.

I'm using Windows XP on a home computer. My computer keeps crashing. It locks up and I have to pull the plug. If I'm in a forum, lines of type start disappearing. If I'm trying to open a program I get an error message like "application failed to initialize." Yesterday I got a Runtime error message: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
I ran Trend antivirus program and Webroot spysweeper, but no problems identified. I keep getting messages from Bigfix that a problem was encountered but by then I can't get Bigfix to open because it's locked up. I ran a dxdiag but it showed no problems either. The problem started when I ran the Uniblue registry sweeper which I thought was free. It identified some old stuff but charged a fee to fix it, so I deleted Uniblue. I went into regedit and removed Uniblue and while I was there I removed several old games from Gamehouse that had been uninstalled over the past year. I swear I didn't touch anything else in the registry! Please keep responses simple and specific as I don't know much about computers.
I just tried to open Incredimail and got the following message: IncMail.exe Application Error: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000044). Click on OK to terminate the application. Surprisingly, my computer didn't lock up yet and I was able to return here to edit my post, but a crash is coming....

I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

Why can't I get XP to open every folder using the "Details" option? I do have it set so that it remembers (most of the time) to re-open that folder with the file view it was in when it was closed, but I want XP to open every new and old folder with the "file details" view. Seems like a simple thing, but I can't get XP to understand that's what I want.

I am running xp pro. I can not get an internet connection through my ethernet card. When I hook up my modem through usb it works fine but unable to utilize my full download speed capabilities. Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange.

I have three (3) questions:1. When I'm closing down Windows XP (Home Edition), I continually receive an error showing "XtkU.exe" cannot. I have checked everywhere and cannot find out what this file is associated with. In addition I have gone through my system and purged all files associated with this executable from the registry. They pop right back in there with a system restart. I'm lost and confused now because I don't know what application uses this file.2. When closing down I receive the same Norton error message another user gets."ccaps.exe" at signoff. I will try and remove Norton to see if that works. 3. The user "quick switch" does not work any longer. I am not sure what is causing that either. Do you think it may be associated with the WtkU file?

We have run across a problem here with APIPA addressing. After we install Windows updates, Windows assigns an APIPA address in the 169.254.x.x range, instead of getting an address from the DHCP server. The effect is that the computer loses connectivity with the network and the Internet. You can confirm this problem by running an IPCONFIG and checking for an address in the 169.254 range.
Releasing and renewing the address does not correct the problem. Assigning a static IP address resolved the issue. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, we found a registry hack that will disable APIPA addressing on the computer, and this does correct the problem so the computer can connect to the network again. We assume that the problem is a result of an update from last Tuesday, but we have not determined which update is the problem. We are still looking. Our concern is that as DHCP leases expire with computers in the field, that this effect may appear. If you get calls for loss of network or Internet connectivity, have the user run IPCONFIG, and if they have an APIPA address, the registry hack is outlined in KB article
