I formatted and reinstalled Win XP on Dimension 2400, but this time around 13 minutes to finish, I got prompted:"INF install failed. reason: handler and parameter error"The after 1 hour, I prompted:"13 minutes to finish install" and it froze.I did reinstall few times before but never had this problem, only thing that changed since the last reinstall.is that I chaged ISP to Shaw cable fast internet connection.
View 14 Replieswhen I set the supervisor and user password on a compuer I am working on, during the boot process, I don' get prompted at all for the password. The computer just continues to boot into Win XP. Anyone know what the problem might be.?Also, in XP even though the Password is set for the Administrator account and the "show Welcome screen" check box is checked, the computer just boots right to the desktop. I reseted the passoword several time and that doesn't work.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop on wich I recently updated to SP3. I have had no problem what so ever, nore do I see any difference. I even have a D-Link wireless card and contrary to some saying it caused major problems after SP3, everything is working fine for me. I updated from SP2 to SP3 with Windows Update when prompted. Perhaps this is the key to possible problems. I read about people installing from a CD or iso image or downloading from whatever questionable website. Please do it the standard way and it should work ok. There seems to be a possible issue with AMD processors so try to get more info if you have this type of processor.
I still didn't install SP3 on my main computer at home and I don't quite understand why I don't even get prompted for it. But I can see it in Windows Update. I'll first test it on my laptop but unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to really fully test it because I have very few programs on it to check compatibility issues, compared to my main computer.
Have signed up for Webshots, and downloaded the most recent version of the software for Windows (XP). Last night, I tried to upload photos, but I was prompted to confirm my email address. Entered my address, but no confirmation received. Tried again tonight, still no luck. Opened a new account, used different email address, no confirmation.Unfortunately their help section has no info on this, and I don't want to pay them money to contact their support team if the free service doesn't seem to work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAlright I have a problem. I removed a bunch of spyware from this computer which included Aurora, WinFixer, Surf Side Kick, and many others. What happened was after rebooting into WindowsI was prompted to re-activate Windows even though I hadn't changed out any hardware. I thought this was rather strange. I went ahead and did an overlay of the operating system. Upon doing the overlay I was prompted to activate Windows, so I did. Upon getting into Windows I found out another culprit which was giving me problems, it was a directory within Program Files. I went into safe mode and deleted the directory. After that I restarted Windows and it kept rebooting after the Windows splash screen.

I clicked on 'Find Solutions' and followed the instructions, which were, click 'Start', click 'Run', type 'services.msc.' then make sure Background Intelligent Transfer Service is on Automatic (not manual) and is 'started'. I did this and tried to re-install the failed updates. This worked, but only for the 5 most recent updates (otherwise there would have been 399 failed updates). How do I go about installing ALL of the failed updates?

View 7 Replies View Relatedworking on a Comcrap Presario (my favorite as some of you know ), older model, not sure what, doesn't really matter anyway.It has a 2 gig hard drive which is about 99.9% full, shows 80 megs of available ram (yeah, yeah, I know) --- user was trying to figure out how to change the registered owner and somehow came up with the brilliant idea of installing XP Got an error message about not being able to find enough space, imagine that Booted up to the dual boot menu for the XP install and 98, I edited the boot.ini file to get rid of that since the install failed, will there be any other files that can be deleted?

Some gave a page to go to for description, some did not. I have tried and tried to get these updates installed, but no success. These were the "critical updates" categories. Is there ANY way I can get the Microsoft to either send me to another address that would install them?

although Service Pack #3 has installed itself....???...not sure how that happen. Its (SP3)listed in Add/Remove...I have searched the web and followed several suggestions...ie, stop windows update service, then delete several folders from Software and Distributions directory...restart windows update service...reboot machine...and still to no avail.........
All MS updates will download, but will not install both for applications (MS Office) & for Windows XP PRO. After trying to install I get a MS window that lists the updates I tried to install failed. I am now about 83 updates behind ...My guess is some form of windows corruption, but how to fix??? already tried to do a windows repair to no avail...
View 7 Replies View RelatedNew problem with winupdate. After clicking "Custom" on the update site, I get the screen that basicly says I must install software for use with the site. I click to start the download and install and the software downloads. After download the screen go's into "Install" mode, then quickly changes to "Some software failed to install". The solution is supposed to be on the update history link, but that does not show the Windows Genuine Advantage software to have been downloaded/installed. Repeating the cycle results in indicating the software for Windows Genuine Advantage has been downloaded and is ready to be installed. Clicking "Download and install" yields the same result of "Some software failed to install".

I recently got windows xp and upgraded from windows 2000. Right now there are 93 updates or so that I can download and have downloaded but can not install. I have no idea why. The newest WGA says my windows is genuine I have 3 different virus protection programs all of which say aside from cookies my computer is clean. Some minor updates work but the critical ones do not. I have tried multiple ideas to fix this and have failed. What happens is I go to the microsoft update site. I do not know what happen. Every time when windows start,there is a pop-up message from the task bar stating that a new hardware 'bus controller' was found and a large dialog box appears that prompts me to install the hardware.So I follow the instruction and check for 'install the software automatically' but failed.I tried several times but not successful.I then go to Device Manager and found a yellow exclamation mark under 'Bus Controllers'.Here I tried to right-click on it and hit 'update driver' but also failed.

Lesson learned, Dont mess with wifes computer when she is not here. replaced ME on her computer and reinstalled all of the backups I had made before I had this brilliant Idea. I decided to leave the stone age sort of and bought a copy of windows xp home to extend the life of my POS just a couple more months. I didn't want to buy a new computer and got a deal on a copy of xp home. I am planning on buying components and building a system from scratch soon, but for now just needed to keep going. Several of the sites I like to frequent recently upgraded and no longer support ME. The copy of xp I received turned out to be an OEM Windows XP Home w/ service pack 2.Like a moronic bozo I set my IOLO Drivescrubber into motion and whiped my HD clean. I didn't change anything in the bios as one: don't know how to and two: afraid to. Once the drive was clean however it failed to recognize the cd rom of xp. I then remembered I had to format and partition the drive in order for it to do so.
I had to do a Windows Repair on my uncle's computer and now I am trying to install SP2 again on a CD I got awhile ago. Well about halfway through it stopped. Says it failed. Anyone know why that is and how do I fix this so SP2 installs fully? I also tried to do it off of Windows Update. Failed that way also. I also tried doing it in Safe Mode. No luck. Same thing happens. What may be causing this? I got rid of 205 spy and adaware that he never scanned for. I also ran an antivirus scan. No viruses.

My cyberphobic aunt wanted xp installed so it would be like her old computer.I've done the following on the laptop: Fdisk, partitioned and formatted hd in FAT32. Started the win xp pro OEM (legal license) install. It recognized the cd and everything was going well until there was a power failure when I was putting in the product code. I tried to simply restart the install and the cd was invalid media. Disk booted up to install menu in my legal win xp desktop. So it isn't totally corrupt.Laptop hd, fdisk, repartitioned, format and no startup with OEM Used set of win xp pro floppy disks to start install. OEM still invalid media. Did install with old xp pro, illegal copy. That worked. Unable to read oem. Downloaded and installed all of the win xp toshiba drivers. Had to search for the drivers as toshiba doesn't post them.

When I click OK on the error message it starts backing out the changes and after that Windows runs o.k. I have tried it twice with the same results. I disabled the Firewall temporarily on the second try but that didn't help. I don't know what it is trying to do when it fails because all I get is the error message.I am currently out of town so it will be next week before I can try anything but I would like to know where to start when I get home.

Desperately searching for some way of getting into WinXP Pro but had no success until I tried the following, which I have written for our users: winxp pro on one of my XP machines would not boot into windows. Tried the "usual" steps to boot, including use of the winxp cd and the win boot up floppy. No luck but I was able to get into Safe Mode using the floppy and then hit Start>Run and typed in the run box "msconfig" (without the quote marks). When it opened, I noticed in the the bottom of the window had this Launch System Restore words so I clicked it and was able to restore the computer system to a day before the last restore, let it do it's thing and when it was over, winxp booted up and I was back in business.
