I installed Windows XP on my computer, but since it wasn't a legit version, I did not activate it using the phone or the internet options. Now that I have a new, legit Windows XP CD, I need you guys to help me get rid of the previous installs on my hard drive and install this new CD. When I start the computer with the New CD in the CD tray, it doesn't load it, it just goes to asking if you would like to activate windows. So how am i supposed to install the new CD?Or can I activate an un-legit copy of windows using a legit License key?

I am having odd problems with XP on my laptop. I installed XP on a new Hard Drive a few weeks ago. I then added SP 1 and SP 2. I downloaded all the hot fixes. I installed from the Dell site as much as I could. ( The original OS was windows ME) Now the System Restore does not work. It goes through the gyrations then comes back and says "system not restored". When I click on the Help or restore settings nothing happens. I cleared the restore points last week and set a new restore point. When I tried it it worked fine. I went back to check this week and it didn't work again. Other problems with mouse installation, USB settings, and odd start up and shut down problems makes me think that there is corruption in windows. I put the Windows XP CD in to see if I could fix some of these problems. I thought maybe reinstalling basic Windows without reformatting would fix the problem. A warning came up and said the copy of windows in my machine is newer than the one on the disk and if I continued I would lose all settings. I assume it means SP1 and SP2. Can I fix this without starting all over again? Also would it be possible to partition my HD and put a new copy of XP on the partition; then transfer from the old copy?
i want to save my windows i use now to a ISO file so i can reinstall it at that state so i don't have to format and start fresh. Understand? So. What im trying to say is. I install a fresh copy of windows xp then i install the things i use the most like themes programs etc. then i want to save it to a ISO so later on when i think its time to go back to my windows xp in a new state i can just install the windows i had before without installing a new copy and installing everything one by one.
I can't cut, copy, or paste anything. when I right click it the menu will pop up and the cut, copy and paste options are listed, but when I go to where I need to paste what ever I have cut or copied the menu that pops up only has two options.......[1] select all ......and [2] properties. What can I do to remedy this problem... I did here recently reformat the HHD and re-install windows XP (with in the last two weeks) thanks for any help given on this topic.
Can anyone help? I wish to copy My Pictures to CD using XPs own copying system. When I put CD in drive and click on My Pictures, under the Picture Tasks on the left side menu, there is no item COPY TO CD. There is only copy this file under the file and folder tasks. I feel sure it is something to do with the two folder icons at the top menu, but I cannot get COPY TO CD to show.

Last year I had work done on my laptop and the shop replaced my old Windows 98 with Windows XP. Now I am told by MS my XP is not genuine and no updates can be sent to me. I get a message every 10 minutes asking if i want to "get genuine" or "resolve later". If I click get genuine, will I be charged a fee for a new XP? What should I do?
I need to copy all files on a local drive to a network drive once a week. I want to be able to do this using a batch file that I can have Windows scheduler execute. This means the use of the Windows Backup utility is not possible. However, program suggestions that have a cloning ability with no compression and does not create its own file can be used.
Went through and individually highlighted folders (containing pictures) to be copied onto cd-r...then clicked on "copy these folders"...everytime the message comes up that there is no disc. I take the disc out( brand new disc), put it back in...same message. I have even tried dvd drive. Nothing. Any suggestions? Want to back things up but don't seem to be able. I read on microsoft.com there is a Backup with Win XP--my understanding it's on the win xp cd...and you have to install it...could've misunderstood...because I tried that and come up with nothing. Input please....
I reecently installed Vista on my computer to try it out and after a few weeks wanted to change back to XP Pro as has some things i did not like.
Here's what i did:
1. I booted into BIOS and changed the bootup to cd/dvd. 2. Booted with my Original CP PRO cd (Not bought with my computer bought after). 3. followed the instructions and deleted the partition on C and formatted (Full not Quick) the C: drive with NTFS.
It gets to the stage that the SETUP is copying files and after 43% and says it cannot copy file WOWEB.exe and to press Esc to skip, F3 to QUIT and ENTER to try again.
It does this with a whole lot of files (Over 30) then after skipping thise files it reboots and gets the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!.

HD would copy files from the old HD to the new HD so I copied all the old HD files to a different partition of the new drive (G Drive).
I now attempting to copy or move files from the copied old HD to the new HD and I am receiving the error message Cannot copy Access is Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and the file is not currently in use.
Using Word or Excel, I can open some of the copied files if they are NOT in the Documents and Settings directory. But if I attempt to open the files that are in the Documents and Settings directory, the error message is Cannot Access Read-Only Document.

I have just started experiencing this problem after installing a new backup hard drive. I am searching a large folder of mp3 files to copy to my mp3 player.Periodically and seemingly at random the folder I am searching through resets. That is it blinks and shifts back to the top of the folder. So I then have to remember where I was and find the place that I left off.
