I recently had to restore practically the whole system (windows xp home) becuase of a glitch. I had my folders intact, but every app and setting had to be re-done. Is there a way to have a backup where if everything blows up again, I could quickly restore everything? I should rephrase that: i know there are ways, but is there a way to do this for a consumer-level user with a budget?

I have a six year old Dell PC that is on its last leg. It cuts off all the time and I am out of memory on my C drive. I want a brand new PC but I want to keep my hard drive intact. I don't really want or need any new programs. I want to continue using XP. What's the best way to go about this. Is there a good online store or should I just go to some Mom and Pop PC shop and have them build me a PC. One problem, I have some very sensitive info on my hard drive and I don't just want to hand it over to people I don't know. What can I do?

Long story short, the "certified, licensed, Member of BBB and Chamber of Commerce." I have XP Pro un authenticated that Windows will not authenticate, update unless I pay them for a authenticated copy. First of All, I am not made of money. Secondly, I have a copy of XP Home Edition that came with the pc.

I want to print a list of all the top-level folders; I don't need to list second-level folders or even what files are in the top-level folders. The only way I know to do this is to open a DOS window in that drive and Go to File/Edit/Select all/Copy then paste it into a Word doc. But then I have to edit out all the date and size info.

View 5 Replies View RelatedPC MightyMax after I was having problems with my cmd not starting up. My cmd would say some 16 bit message The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal operation or for that matter try and run anything dos related and I really don't know how that started. I downloaded PC MightyMax to try and fix some of those problems. After installing I ran the test it said and it said I had a good bit of problems wrong and it said I had to pay to fix them so I just said forget it. I restarted my computer and when it got back to the windows part a message comes up in a bunch of symbols I deffinately cannot read. To be blunt just about everything is in those symbol things. It has a button to click even though I can't read it. I click it and it does nothing. I can't get to my desktop or anything. I tried starting in safemode and got to my desktop after hitting the button on the message and all my desktop items and everything else is in those weird symbol things

Notice considerable lag when doing the following simple tasks: use the dialog boxes to browse folders (save as, etc) is slow ,double clicking my computer or any folders is slow, right click and create new folders is slow, clicking START button and going to programs is slow

(About 1200 mp3 files all inside these 100 folders...all inside 1 folder if that makes any sense)I'm thinking about moving all those mp3's outside there folders so that i have just one continuous stream of mp3's. Some message opened and said I'd have to allow something to happen so without thinking I stupidly allowed it. Now almost all my folders have this annoying blue task bar running down the left side of the folders. I have noticed in various other places on my PC that certain random folders also display an album cover.why is this, i have tried to select the restore to default but it seems to not wipe the folders clean. i hope this makes sense, its kinda annoying me that this is happening.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and changed the icon, clicked ok, blah blah. However, now whenever I open a folder, it instead opens the default "Search" thing.
So I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and added a new thing called "open", to open with "explorer.exe".
Now the folder opens, however when I double click a folder within that,rather than it opening in the same window, it opens in a new window!!
And no, this is not the setting in Folder Options that selects between the two. It is alerady set to open in same window. I've gone through all the other settings in Folder Options.
I've literally just started having problems with my computer. Sporadically I have lost the ability to right-click, sometimes whenever I do so on either a folder or on an application, no little menu comes up
Also, when browsing through folders, the loading starts to become very slow and sometimes the blue menu at the side of the window isn't there at all. When I click on images to preview, or folders to open, sometimes nothing happens at all and the window just remains the same.
ALSO whilst trying to open some applications I get the error pop-up sound, but no error message box comes up to tell me what the error is. It just makes the noise, and I close the half-loaded application without it crashing (This happened with Photoshop, Adaware, Outlook Express, and once with Sonic RecordNow - all started loading, the error noise was heard, and the program left half loaded or missing parts) I've tried again and it seems it's all hit and miss like the other symptoms...sometimes i'll be able to right-click normally, sometimes i'll be able to browse files normally, sometimes programs will load, but the problem still (at random moments, it seems) arises again.
When Alt Ctrl Delete -ing, either nothing comes up and an error noise is heard, or the little window with the information does come up, but the desktop behind it flickers as if constantly reloading very fast.
The only error sound in which a box popped up, was one telling me "xvidcore.dll was not found". I clicked OK and everything reloaded as if windows explorer had crashed (the start bar, desktop etc).
I haven't done anything as of now, too scared to restart, or try and open any applications it might not like. I can't be exactly sure when I started to have problems, as I leave the computer on for days at a time sometimes (it's been running for about four days this time, about three days is normally the maximum) because I use BitTorrent a lot seeding and downloading.
it asked me to make a new folder thats wasnts c:windows. so i did and its xp. i started up computer and none of my old files are on desktop, toolbar etc. but they are there on ym computer. how can i restore these to how they were? and install all my programs again?
View 1 Replies View Related2 days ago, I used add/remove programs then Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton AV, and replaced it with AVG Free. My PC seemed to work fine until yesterday: upon booting, AVG automatically tried to update and ended up reporting "something bad happened..."; Not sure if AVG issue is relevant but now I CANNOT OPEN FOLDERS or APPS!
Now about 9 times out of 10, when I try to open a file or app, the screen icons and background pic disappear momentarily, and nothing opens. If I manage to open a folder, it seems my PC hangs up similarly at the following task (sometimes I get my RCA Lyra icon suddenly showing up in the toolbar). BTW I experienced the exact same problem a couple of times before the AVG install but rebooting would always fix the issue. Not anymore! It took many reboots but I was able to get AdAware to run - found nothing - and Maintenance Mechanic 6 - showed PC Repair is needed but hangs once it gets to reading the disk index. I tried deleting Lyra, but it won't let me (hangs once I manage to open the add/remove program page).
I want to see my hidden files in my computer but i cant make it happen i tried go to folder options/view/show hidden folders i apply and the ok but it doesnt work i go abck there and the do not show is thicked I am runing xps2 , is just reformated computer
