Does Not Recognize Full Capacity Of Hard Drive

Dec 22, 2006

I have a laptop which after I purchased it and installed my own backup utility and created an image. I then started my windows xp home eddition with the cd and went to the section to redo the partitions. I deleted the partion for the recovery however after doing so it is not shown as unpartiton space. The system should have 80 gb hard drive however the statement above the partion says only 75gb is available to use. This is the same total as on the control panel / disc management. How can I get XP to recognize the entire hard drive space?

Laptop Hard Drive Crashed, No Floppy, No CD-Rom And Bios Doesnt Support USB

How do I reinstall Windows XP on my laptop (Compaq V5000 - which is several years old)? The laptop's cd-rom is dead. There is no floppy disk drive. The hard drive has crashed. I have read on some websites that I can make a bootable usb drive. However, I have not been succesful in making a bootable USB thumb drive when the laptop's BIOS doesnt support a USB device to be bootable. The only thing I do have is my desktop computer (which is working fine) and a USB external case for the laptop internal hard drive.

Hard Drive Is 100% Full

I'm at my wits end. I was queried by my computer to clean up my hard drive because it was full. ( I wasn't downloading anything). This seemed very odd to me as I always clean up my hardrive regularly.I usually defrag my hardrive every few weeks and the last time I did it I had 29% free space. Now when I check it I have 0% free space and the hard drive has over 20000 fragmented files, I've never seen it look like this.I ran spyware and came back no threats.Something has filled up my hardrive unexplainable.I've tried a lot of things from system restore to chkdsk.

Pro SP3 Doesnt Recognize USB Ports As USB2

Aug 23, 2008

I was having a lot of troubles with XP PRO after a CPU failure, when I tried to do an XP installation Repair. It failed miserably and after a month of posting and searching for answers, I threw in the towel. I reformatted the HD and did a clean install. On the advice of a MS Tech, I downloaded SP3 and installed it first thing. After I got everything up and running with all the updates, I discovered that XP no longer recognizes my USB ports as USB2. I found some original drivers on the Motherboard installation disk, but it will not allow me to install them because my XP SP2 install disk is already supposed to have them. I tried removing all the USB drivers and forcing XP to figure it out, but no luck. It is an ASUS P5GD2 Deluxe with a P4 processer and an XP PRO SP3 Operating System.

After selecting all items (including hidden) in the C drive, and clicking properties, the collective size is 51GB. However, when I click properties on the C drive from 'My Computer' it says Used Space: 101GB. Free Space: 4.36GB. I don't know what happened to the other 54GB.I saw a similar problem on this site, and it was resolved by turning off system restore. I tried this and it only freed and extra 3 or so GB. This is a really frustrating problem and I haven't a clue what to do next.

Won't Recognize SATA Hard Drive

Jan 25, 2007

I have an HP Media PC M400Y. It is a P4 3.0 Ghz with 1GB ram. It originally came with MCE2002. Last week I upgraded to MCE2005 to use the media extender feature with my new X-box 360.
Here is the problem and some background.

About a year ago, I had installed a second SATA hard drive, Seagate Baracuda 300GB, model ST3300831AS. This drive was plug and play into the motherboard and never had any issues. Before reformating the main C: drive, I moved all my valuable data on the SATA drive.

I then turned the PC off, removed the power and signal cables from the SATA drive. (I'm a novice, and didn't want to take any chances of erasing the SATA drive, while reformating the main C drive)

Hard Drive With Win98 - Recognize

Aug 6, 2005

I was told I could take a hard drive from a windows 98 computer and the person is buying a new Windows xp so I can hook up the win 98 hard drive as a slave to the new computer with win xp so I can drop and drag or cut and past files that they want off the 98 hard drive put on their new computer. Now If their new computer with the win xp on it, if there is an ide cable going to the hard drive and nothing else then I can hook up the win 98 hard drive to the same ide cable as a slave and no problem.

However if the windows xp computer has the hard drive on the ide cable and also the cd-rom then is it ok just to hook up another ide cable to their mother board and hook the hard drive from the windows 98 computer on the end of that ide cable as the master? and by turning the computer off, and then hooking up the hard drive and then turning the computer back on it should reconize the windows 98 hard drive in my computer right away right?

If I would have to put the windows 98 hard drive in the new computer on a seperate ide cable is it ok to have it as master? cause the hard drive that is already in it would be master to but it would be on a different ide cable. I am hoping the new computer just has the hard drive on an ide cable by itself so I can just hook the other one up as a slave and get the files and be done with it. How ever if someone could give me a couple or three scenario's with ide cables and hooking this up I would be very much appreciatetive.

I am trying to install XP Pro. After I boot from the CD everything looks good until it's time to select which HD to install in. It won't recognize it, I've found out there are multiple problems with these new large HDs. People talk about the 137 gigs limit, upgrading the drivers via Floppy, even customizing an installation CD image with an 'OEM' folder below i386. I've tried many things but still can't have it recognized. This box doesn't come with a floppy and I don't have one. Why the freaking dependability on a floppy drive.

Windows And Sonic Keep Saying My Hard Drive Is Full

Feb 7, 2010

Hi. My problem is similar to this one here
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?threadID=295044
Except I am not running Vista and don't have AOL on there.
Also, I don't think my drive is actually full, or if it is, it's because of something that Sonic or Windows did.

I have a bunch of computers. This Dell laptop, Inspiron E1505, is one I primarily use to watch DVD's or online shows. There were a lot of programs installed, because I used to use it regularly, and then I loaned it to someone for about a year. It had very few files in terms of documents, pictures, music, or videos, because I had cleaned all that out before I loaned it to her, and I got a new laptop, and so only use this one to watch DVD's. Also, I should mention it has a fairly new DVD recorder because the old one died a few months back.

Sometimes I use this laptop to burn or copy disks, which is what I have been doing the past two days, using the program Sonic Digital Media LE v7, which came preinstalled. It was working fine copying dvd's (legal copies of ones I recorded myself) until yesterday, when it suddenly said that my hard drive was full and to free up "0 kb" in order to proceed.

When I close the program after this error, it gives me three crash messages (every time).

First one says MediaHub.exe application error.
The instruction at "0x0035afd0" reference memory at "0x35171ae8". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program."

The next error is almost exactly the same but gives all the numbers as 0x00000000.

The third error is Microsoft Visual C++ RUntime Library Runtime Error! program: mediahub.exe
R6025 - pure virtual function call.

At first, rebooting helped this problem, but then I got the error again. So I ran disk cleanup. It took a really long time and then the pc turned itself off. I turned it back on and it said that the pc had overheated because the fan vents were blocked. The vent is on the bottom, and was very dirty (possibly because my friend was a heavy smoker), so I wiped it off with a damp napkin. I rebooted and ran disk cleanup again. I was able to copy disks again until it gave me the error again. Every time I go to the C drive and check the disk free space, it gives me very little there, but I know that it's not because of any files I have on there.

Anyway, I also uninstalled all of the unimportant programs and deleted any extra files I could find. I want to run check disk, but I got an error message and it said it would run it next time I rebooted (that didn't help and check disk still didn't run, and still wouldn't run next time I tried it). I tried to run disk defragmenter, but it said I only had 5% hard drive space left and it needs 15%. I ran it anyway, and it seemed to work, and I was able to copy more disks.

Now I am getting that error message again.

I am running disk cleanup again, compressing old files, so we'll see if that works. I haven't tried System Restore yet, will try that one next. I really would rather not reinstall Windows.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Unable To Recognize USB Hard-drive Enclosure?

Oct 28, 2008

I've got a very annoying problem with XP that I just can't figure out. I have spent hours and hours trying to fix this and posted on several forums to no avail, so any help would be much appreciated. My laptop died last week when I spilt water all over it. The harddrive was not effected and stayed completely dry.I am basically trying to save the data on the harddrive and completely wipe/format it.

I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device".

Computer Doesn't Recognize Hard Drive

Aug 19, 2009

I am running XP Pro on my computer. On another drive I have windows 7. My computer stopped booting to my XP drive all of a sudden, but it would let me boot to my Windows 7 drive. That lasted for about 3 days. Now I can't boot to either drive. When I start the computer it says there is no HDD. I tried to use the XP disk to repair, that didn't work., so I thought I'd do an XP install. But my hard drive doesn't show up all the time. Or it will show the HDD but upon trying to pick a partition to set up XP in, it then tell me there is no HDD. I get the blue screen of death, and have to manually force a shut down. Other times it tell me that the HDD is RAW, and it needs to be formatted. How can I get the HDD to format? Is there a way to do it through DOS. Sometimes I can't even get to the DOS prompt. The bootup section is corrupt. I need to repair it, but can't if the system doesn't see my HDD.

Installer Doesn't Read Full Hard Drive

Apr 7, 2010

I have spent a long time struggling with Windows over different errors, which all lead back to page file problems, which ultimately all led back to my RAM. I found this out after XP's system file went irreparably corrupt, when my hackintosh (installed on a different hard drive) started experiencing the same problems.Bad RAM has been removed, and I'm trying to reinstall XP. I formatted the drive using OSX's Disk Utility program, wrote zeros to the entire surface, and partitioned it in FAT32 (Disk Utility can not format to NTSC).When I use my CD to reinstall Windows, it does not read the full drive. It instead offers to install XP on a 130gb drive where my 640gb drive is. If I follow it through, it installs just fine, but it formats my 640gb drive to only have one usable NTSC partition of 130gb.The last time I attempted this, I removed every drive and storage device from my computer except for the 640gb drive and the same thing still happened.
