I have an 14 year old HP hard drive, I already recycled the computer at Best Buy. I pounded for over 10 minutes with a hammer trying to get the HD out and couldn't so I knocked out the entire drive bay. The HD has very sensitive data all of my banking passwords. What would be the most secure way of destroying the HD? I think I heard pour bleach on it? The drive bay is industrial grade steel, LOL, so if I had to drill through the HD it would have to be from back to front
I downloaded sp2 into my hp xp sp1 laptop. I clicked to install. Because of inactivity, the screen came up "To begin, click your user name." (Just one user, me.) The pointer wouldn't move. Nothing worked. Nothing. No response. I pressed the power button, and it started going into hybernation. As soon as it finished, I pushed again. It came back on, with same results. A little later, I could move the pointer, but I still can't click on my user name (no response).
I think i have a virus or spyware . i use Spy Sweeper.Ad-Aware SE Personal .Spybot Search & Destroy CCleaner.but something is stell runing in the back ground.i have no virus programs do any one no any free virus programs.
I hate all the unwanted software that comes with this computer, and I don't even use any of the media stuff. Tell me, is it possible to just use dban and then install XP Home from a boot disc that I have? Could anything go wrong?
I have recently fallen victim to a nasty virus which tried to destroy my entire operating system. It kept sending me pop ups via IE and I guess I downloaded it off a facebook video to which it attached itself.kaboob or something. Anyway, I survived but haven't been able to restore my desktop function ability. First it said'restore my active desktop' but I couldn't. Finally I managed to restore about one eighth of my picture but can't get any further. The rest of my screen is white and that's where it stands now.
Everytime that i have such kind of problems above when i try to boot my PC it doesn't boot (Means there's nothing comes up on the Monitor with flashing green light, HDD just run for a while then stop, and there's some wierd noise comes out of my Speakers as well it's like chinese or sth, wierd huh? With that happens if i just leave my PC for a couple of days and try to boot it again, it boots up but somehow it cannot go into the OS and when i try the Safe Mode, it just show me alot of lines and continous beeping.
I have seen XP x64 bit, and i was wondering if anyone knew if that edition is time sensitive? does it have a time limit associated with it like the downloadable copy has?
suddenly this week, all the drop down menus on my computer (tools, windows, etc.), the menu from my "start" button, and even all the drop downs on my photoshop program are SOOOOOO incredibly sensitive! practically just going near them activates the menus, and even if my mouse goes over something at lightning speed, it STILL activates that menu and i have to click somewhere else to get it to disappear
I would like to make my mouse more sensitive in xp pro. I have the pointer speed turned up to the max. I have also looked into changing the smooth mouse curve x and y in the regedit; however, it looks like this only has to do with how fast the pointer accelerates not with how much territory it covers. I would like to change mine so that a smaller movement of the mouse covers more of the display. would changing these values do that?
I am sole installer and user of my XP Home SP2 machine. I have Administrator rights; (I checked to make sure in Safe Mode as the actual default Admin). In trying to backup my System State, it "fails" 75% into it saying I don't have permission on certain sensitive files and that restore will fail.
What are the rules for a case sensitive search when searching for all files and folders in XP. I have set the option, and have tried searching in both upper and lower case options, and still get the same results.
I had a bad HDD failure which corrupted part of my WinXP OS with the result that I am unable to boot into Windows. I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.

I keep getting the following message errorloading C:winntsystem32msa64chk.dll. I tried to clear it by reloading windows xp but not only did it not change but now i have a corrupt file on some software. which says cannot find data base file or data base file is corrupt.
CD-RW and DVD-Rom stopped reading data on my CD's. They see the CD's but don't read the data, the CD's appear not to contain anything. I've posted the particular problem twice on this forum, but got no answer. For users experiencing the same or similar problems, I've now determined the cause... I've got a SAHARA USB 2.0 flash drive that came with a UFD-utility that enables one to configure the drive into a private and public area, enabling you to safeguard critical files. This utility causes this problem. Unfortunately I could thus far not find a solution, apart from uninstalling the utility and making do without this function. The flash drive works fine otherwise, not causing any problems. Only the UFD-utility does. I will see if I can find an update that resolves this problem and I will let SAHARA know about it.
Need the name and data for the following: HKEY Current User>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Policies>Explorer> I have the "default" but not the second one for nodisk or something.

Probably a rookie question, not sure if in right category, but appreciate any help or resources! SITUATION: Screen on old Dell Inspiron laptop pooped out, not going to fix.Laptop still turns on, & I can hear things working when I power it on, but nothing on the screen. Have replaced it with a Lenovo laptop, soon to be arriving. Was told to get Windows XP on it to facilitate the transfer, can upgrade later if necessary.QUESTION: How do I get the data fom my old laptop to the new, if the screen on the old is not working, but the computer seems to be? I went to the Apple store & they copied the old HD to a backup HD, but some have told me I might be able to get it right off my old laptop. What can I bring from my old HD...Files? programs? Will I need to re-install programs like Microsoft Office or Itunes?
"Application Data" is taking up about 600MB total across all the users on my computer.
Its located: C:Documents and Settings*user name*Application Data
So basically, what is it? What's it do? Is it OK to delete? Etc.

I have Windows XP X64, and I absolutely hate it. I want to downgrade to x86 (32-bit) so that I can run my stuff properly. Is there any way I can uninstall Windows XP X64 without losing my data, so that I can install XP x86 without any issues?
I was having a problem with a lot of my Data becoming damaged or corrupted. At first i expected a virus (I run Nod32), but now i'm not sure. I reformatted, and repaired the MBR. When I run Nod32, it usually tells me one or more files have been damaged.
XP Pro had the OS go bad. It would only start to load and then say the needed files were damage or missing. I removed the hard drive and read it on another XP machine but could find no data (pictures) anywhere under Documents and Settings or anyplace else. So I reinstalled XP Pro to the c:windows directory and it works fine, but can still find no data. Is the data being hidden? How can I get it back?
My XP partition is NTFS. I also have a 10 GB partition formatted FAT32 that I use mainly for disk images & some backups. I noticed a new file on this partition called "gdiplus.dll" What is this and why is it on my data partition? I deleted it once but it is back again. I do not use indexing and system restore is not active on the data partition.
