i have a dvd + - rw and it just stopped working the other day i was like whatever now i need it for a project for school and i cant get it to work can ne one help and i upgraded the ram a few weeks ago
View 14 RepliesDell dimension e520, and for some reason my dvd drive has magicly stopped working it will recognize that the dvd is in there but it wont play it! i found this out trying to play cod4 and ive also tried several movies and other games, none of them worked, ive uninstalled and reinstalled the software, i have gone into the device manager and haven't been able to find anything wrong there but idk im very good at this stuff.

For some reason the two USB ports have stopped working and no USB devices are recognised. I have looked at the device manager under USB controllers and there are four USB controllers listed which are as follows: Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 enhanced host controller 24CDIntel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C2Intel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C4Intel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C7 Underneath those are four USB root hubs.
I have previously used a USB card reader and external hard drive on both ports without any problems but now when I connect any device nothing at all happens.
I have windows XP HOME installed on the C drive of my laptop and Windows XP Pro installed on the E drive. Both E and C drives had password protections. Few weeks ago I removed the password protection for E drive. But now, when I try to access E drive through my C drive (by going to My Computer>E>Documents and Settings>Jake) it is showing a "access is denied" window. Why is this? She's actually made a shortcut on the desktop for it.Try mapping the drive however, and it say Access is Denied every time. Try to disconnect the drive and it tells you the files are in use (because they are, but not through the map). So to reiterate those two methods of network access I listed above have both been tried.
I have a hard disk (non-booting) that was formatted by windows 98. I put a new drive in the system and put xp pro on it. The drives show up in device manager, and on my computer, but when I attempt to access the
drive, it says "unformatted drive, do you want to format". I hit no,because I don't want to lose the info on it.
When i plug in my pen drive into my computer, i open My computer where i can see it, but when i try to open it, a message pops up saying "insert a disk in unit H:" or something like this. This message usually appears when there is no disk in that drive and you try to open it. but the pen drive is plugged in! not even mac os read the pen drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI receive the following message in Device Manager under the floppy drive: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39). I have attempted to remove the drive and let XP recognize it and I have also tried uninstall and install of the driver both without success. I found similar hits to my problem through a google search and one had a solution for a CD rom drive problem from this forum.

When power finally came back on I turned on my computer, but even though I didn't lose power again the phase went up and down. I have a 250GB Western Digital hard drive with a ~195GB partition formatted as FAT32. The partition is called "Documents" and has the letter C: assigned to it. The rest of the hard drive isn't formatted. The operating system (WinXP) is installed on a different hard drive.Since yesterday in My Computer or Explorer it's called "Local Disk C:" and whenever I click on it I get a box that says "The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". For two hours it came back and I backed up all the most important information but then the same problem came back again. I was able to see the contents of the partition through a few applications but not access it. My whole computer is working sluggish since this happened.
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy friend's computer seized up in the middle of the boot. Tried recovery, but it isn't able to go forward. The hard drive seemed to be spinning tho, so chances were good we could recover the data. I removed the hard drive and copied everything to a back-up external drive using my own computer. Replaced the hard drive in the disabled computer. Question is how do I install Windows XP? The recovery files on the hard drive are not accessible, I assume, so we can't use those - right? We misplaced the disks that came with the computer, so I'm buying a new copy of Windows XP.

The problem occured about 2 weeks ago when i found that that my Mum's company mailroom website suddenly stopped being accesable. When I try to access it a ''this page cannot be displayed'' page comes up briefly and then is replaced by ''Dell search'' page. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have two laptops, a ThinkPad T30 and a Latitude C840 (they are both working with XP SP2, except the T30 doesn't have a screen). I'd like to move the T30's drive into the C840, but when I do this, the C840 will hang right after the BIOS screen (incl. the XP CD's Press a key to boot off the CD if I tell it to boot from the disc drive first). My first thought was to try Recovery Console from the XP CD. I can log into the install, and I've already tried fixmbring and fixbooting it. This doesn't help.
This leaves the option of the drivers not being right. I installed the C840 chipset drivers, nothing. I'd really rather not go on a wild goose chase trying to figure out what'll get things up and running
I downloaded something stupid and probably got a virus as a result of it. A day or so later, when I next turned on the computer, it only got as far as loading the background to the Windows XP login screen, not the dialogue box itself, then rebooted. When it rebooted, it sounded like the hard drive stopped for a second, then started again. I formatted my hard drive, and after discovering that having a second hard drive connected causes Windows setup to crash reinstalled Windows XP Pro. It didn't help; in fact the reboot happened even earlier, while the Windows XP Loading screen was up. I went back to XP Home, and now the computer will get as far as it originally did, but doesn't reboot, it just freezes.

I have a usb key drive that works fine with several desktop and laptop computers except one desktop. When it's plugged in nothing happens. Other usb devices work fine with this computer. Device manager shows all usb controllers working with no yellow exclamations. I tried plugging the drive into a hub and directly into the usb slot with no luck. I've noticed when the drive is plugged into other computers the red light comes on. With this computer the red light doesn't come on when plugged directly in, but if it's pulled halfway out and then slowly pushed in the light comes on. It's still not recognized, however. What should I be checking?

I recently made a movie in Windows Movie Maker and have put 2 different kind of DVD -R discs into the D drive (I have used these discs for movie burning in the past). I am now getting messages that read "Drive NEC DVDRW 9 does not contain the appropriate type of DVD disc" and a message that said an error occurred (in general). I am guessing that something has somehow changed in recent days though other than slower than usual performance I have not had any major problems with the computer.

I've tried a couple of things that were recommended through another site.
1) I turned "SAFE MODE" on and the cd-rom worked fine but when I got out of safe it wound not fire up.
2) I uninstalled the cd-rom and let the computer reinstall it but that did'nt work either. Please any help you could give me would be great.
I decided to clear the dust out of the inside of my
computer tower today. After cleaning out all the dust, I turned on the
computer for the first time and I noticed the fan on the side had stopped
operating.
But I have a Nokia Tower/case if that is of any help to anyone. It's the
colourful fan on the side which has stopped working.
My USB devices were working fine untill I went to Windows Updates and downloaded all the latest updates. This is when all my problems started. Now when I plug in a USB device I get a balloon on my task bar stating that my "USB device is not recognizied". I have done all the troubleshooting. I have XP PRo with all the latest updates.

I have tried updating the drivers and have had no luck.
What happened was this: I loaned my computer to a freind and told him, "Don't install anything without checking with me first!" He did, for about half the stuff I took off after I got it back.And my alt-tab has stopped working. The thing is, it works fine for the other profile on the computer. I'm assuming the problem is a registry setting somewhere. I looked and compared but I couldn't find anything out of line. So now I'm at a loss. I know I missed something somewhere. Oh, and I'm using WinXP SP1 on a Compaq Presario 2100, which I update on a regular basis.(This is a loptop I use as a "loaner," not my good one with all my personal stuff on it, by the way. Maybe I should get a copy of Norton Ghost before loaning it out again.?

I don't know how it happened, but it's wreaking havoc with Adobe Premiere because on all old projects I have to relocate all files on what were F that are now on G. It's also messing up my shortcuts.
