Redirect Ctrl-Alt-Del To Task Manager Without Welcome Screen?

Oct 21, 2009

I have a question about the Ctrl-Alt-Del combo on Windows XP Pro. I am attempting to get the task manager to open when the user hits ctrl-alt-del instead of the normal "Security Options" window (with the 'lock computer' options etc). The problem I see is that the only way to do this appears to be by enabling the Welcome Screen. how to get the Ctrl-Alt-Del to open task manager no matter what? I would even be happy completely disabling the ability to hit ctrl-alt-del.

The reason I am doing this is because I have some XP machines running some custom vendor software. This software will crash if the screen locks or the "Security Options" window is launched (Absurd, but apparently this is a bug in the software they can't fix...). There is no hope for the vendor to fix the bug, so I need to find a way to prevent the crash. Sometimes the tool will run for 300-400 hours, so if someone accidentally hits ctrl-alt-del it could possibly ruin hundreds of hours of tests.

"Switch To" Options Wont Work In Task Manager?

Apr 12, 2007

I am using Windows XP professional, service pack 2, on all machines. If I check "minimize on use", select an application in the "Applications" tab, and click "Switch to", it does not switch to that application but opens another window instead. I have this problem on 3 of the 4 machines I normally use. Can anyone tell me of a configuration setting that changes this behavior? The only difference between the machine that works and the ones that don't is how they connect to the network. The machines with the problem are on my home network connected through a workgroup.

Task Manager / Device Manager Don't Run

A friend of mine has a 4 yr. old PC running XP Home with 128Mb of memory. He's had problems with programs aborting recently. I tried to run Device Manager to make sure there were no issues there. It briefly brought the screen up, then it went away. The same thing happened to Task Manager when I tried to see what was running and how much memory was being used. Anybody ever see this behavior before? I might try installing a memory cleaner pgm (ie. Memturbo), but I'm not sure I would even be able to get it to run. The hard drive amd memory seem to have no errors.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete To Log In

Jun 25, 2003

I have not tested this with any version of Windows XP besides XP Pro. It might work in Home Edition or other versions. If you do this, then you will get the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to begin" box when you turn on your computer, before it asks for your username and password.  It also asks for you to press Ctrl-Alt-Del before you can unlock your computer if you lock it.  This is done by default in Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003.
