I have a large hard disk and a card reader and 2 DVD Writers, It is terrible to use disk mangement tools to create logical drives, format them, rename them and re-assign the drive letters for all the drives. Is there any simple way to create partitions and format them prior to the installation of XP? Just like the old Win98, I can create and format as many as I like.

I purchased a Dell Laptop two years before for working with PLCs at our machines. The laptop has Windows XP and only one partition 80GB. I installed many softwares in it. All my data is in this partition and I fear if anytime windows would corrupt, all my data including softwares for machines would also be lost. I want to create two or three other partitions but wondering how to do. Can anyone help me out?

My question: What is the best way create another partition and format the remainder of my HD? I have the retail WINXP CD (non SP2). When doing a fresh installation, I created a 50 GB partition on my new 300 GB Seagate HD. As you know, the "non SP2" CD does not allow the installer to recognize the full 300 GB at installation. So basically, I have (1) active 50 GB partition with XP installed on it. The remaining 250 GB is open and empty. I finally have the computer running; installed SP2, drivers, etc. How can I properly access the rest of the drive to create several more partitions and format?

My friend recently gave me his computer after buying a new one. It's actually pretty decent by totally crippled by viruses and stuff. When he gave it to me, he had Ubuntu and XP installed on it. The XP would no longer start (blue screen) and I couldn't use Ubuntu for what I wanted to do. I reinstalled windows, however I didn't know which partition was Ubuntu and which was the broken Windows. It didn't really matter to me at the time, so I just picked one and overwrote it.Now, I've realized that I made the wrong choice. It claims I have two hard drives in my now working version of Windows: C: and D:. D: is the one I'm acutally using, but it's only 20 GB large while the C: with the bad version of Windows is 150 GB. I don't need any information off of C:, so is there some way I can just delete it and add the extra hard drive space to the partition I actually use?

Sometime early next year I will be building a new system. The system will likely have one large hard drive. As of now I will be installing XP Pro. I was curious how everyone else splits up their drive. How big of a partition is generally created for the OS. And do most people partition the remaining space. Now a file architecture question. When non OS applications games, utilities, MS Office, etc.) are installed do most people put then in D:Program Files Or create separate sub-folders for the broad categories and install them in the appropriate sub folder.

I was given a brand new Compaq Presario SR1910NX recently (I have 2 other heavy duty computer I use for video-editing, etc.). It is one of those "pre-loaded" machines with 2 partitions (one for OS; other for backup). The operating system is XP Home and plenty of bloatware. I don't plan on doing anything fancy with the machine - just some basic stuff like maybe a music server, check email, I would like to do a clean install with Windows XP SP2 (primarily to get rid of the partitions, bloatware, and upgrade OS).

So I think I was affected by the SP3 update. I went out and got another harddrive to reinstall on since the other harddrive wouldn't even boot up. I can format the disc and the setup files load and then the system does the reboot. But after it reboots it ask me if I want to install XP and it takes me through the prompts of which drive I want to partition.

HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.

I have two computers, one I use for gaming, the other for school. Both computers had 60gb Maxtor (school with lots of room, gaming with about 10 gb free). My school HD took a powder (the evil clicky noise of doom), but I was able to back up my files prior to that. Me being a quick thinker, I decide to upgrade my gamer puter to a 120gb (don't wanna go too nutso, as I am considering building a much superior computer), and put the good 60 gb in my old Athlon 700. Problem? I cannot get Windows XP Home to complete install on my gamer computer. (Athlon 700 installed just fine with 'good' 60gb).Gamer Computer: Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR Ram 2100, KR7A Raid MOBO, GeForce3 Ti 200 (128MB DDR RAM), SB Audigy 2(AGP).
It is a RAID mobo, but i do not use the raid functionality, I did not have a problem before(I have my HD and my 2 roms on ide now). I go through the install steps, and I get to the very very end, where it states you are about to start Windows XP, and then it hangs, and thats it.I have tried to ensure there are no conflicts, I pulled out my sound card as well as my network card, and 're-seated' my video card and RAM. I have tried looking at using a winxp bootup floppy, booted into safe mode (the only error it detects is the missing RAID, no conflicts detected there). Heck, I even swapped out mouse and keyboard. I tried putting back the good 60gb back in the pc, and reformatting, but still get the same thing(sometimes the screen is black, sometimes the icky blue of xp, but that's it).I have no idea now. I did make sure that my bios was up to date before taking down the system originally, and it was, so no change was made there. Even swapped out the ribbon cables to ensure nothing was damaged on original removal.

My themes were all working fine but one unfortunate day i was installing one of the themes and it asked me to reboot from then on am not able to use any of the downloaded themes but i can use the themes i had installed prior to that i can use the themes i installed after that fatal installation. now the problems am facing are if i double click on a windows visual style file the themes (normally a window open with a preview of the theme) i dont get the preview of the new theme but the preview of the previously applied theme. If at all i save all the windows visual file to default themes folder and the go to properties->themes-> i just get a black box in center and if i apply that i get windows classic theme *the other problem is i get shrill noise which is unberable sometimes from the pc. i dunno how to rectify it.

I can't access the "Run" command from the start menu. When I click on it windows brings up a message box saying "Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" Even if I click yes, the shortcut doesn't do anything. I can still access the run command by using the windows button + r on the keyboard. This affects the "Search" and "Help & Support" commands too.

I have an Intel(R)Celeron(R),cpu 2ghz,Windows XP home 2002 with SP2. This was bought from Tiny computers 2 years ago. I never had the windows cd - it was already installed. As you may well know, Tiny have gone out of business thus my total care cover is now void. There is no problem with my computer at the moment but I have been looking into how to re-install if it should become necessary. Simple advice would be appreciated as I am not very computer literate!

just booted and installed windows xp SP1. I have 4 other computers connected to a working wireless router, with this computer connected by an ethernet cable. The cable is working properly, because my laptop can connect to the network through it. I need to connect to the internet on my new computer to run updates, download latest drivers, etc...basically getting this beast ready to start installing my favorite programs and games. But, when I plug the ethernet cable into the port on the mobo, windows doesnt detect it. There is no LAN option in the 'Network Connections' folder, but a '1394 Connection'. How do I get windows to reconize the port This is either a problem with the MOBO (asus crosshair) or a problem with SP1, and i dont know which

I have two problems, the file siteadv.exe is missing. I don't know why I can't get this fixed on McAffee's site, but when I put in my windows XP disc, the disc runs and the menu pops up. I click on install and a progress bar runs for a couple of seconds, then it says it needs to restart. The system restarts, goes to desktop and that is all. I get no menu that allows me to repair or anything. Do I extract this file from the windows cd, and why can't I get the cd to do any more than what I described. I have a dell XPS400.
