I have a large hard disk and a card reader and 2 DVD Writers, It is terrible to use disk mangement tools to create logical drives, format them, rename them and re-assign the drive letters for all the drives. Is there any simple way to create partitions and format them prior to the installation of XP? Just like the old Win98, I can create and format as many as I like.
I was just wondering if i could have more then one OS installed on my computer my freind had told me that if i were to create a partition then i can install a different OS on it. But i wouldnt know what to do with this bit of info he gave me i know about partition magic but i feel that doing random stupid things is not a very smart idea so i thought i'd get to know all i can about this
I purchased a Dell Laptop two years before for working with PLCs at our machines. The laptop has Windows XP and only one partition 80GB. I installed many softwares in it. All my data is in this partition and I fear if anytime windows would corrupt, all my data including softwares for machines would also be lost. I want to create two or three other partitions but wondering how to do. Can anyone help me out?
My question: What is the best way create another partition and format the remainder of my HD? I have the retail WINXP CD (non SP2). When doing a fresh installation, I created a 50 GB partition on my new 300 GB Seagate HD. As you know, the "non SP2" CD does not allow the installer to recognize the full 300 GB at installation. So basically, I have (1) active 50 GB partition with XP installed on it. The remaining 250 GB is open and empty. I finally have the computer running; installed SP2, drivers, etc. How can I properly access the rest of the drive to create several more partitions and format?
My company was messed up so I decided to clean reinstall xp pro, my hard drive was split into 3 partition, C, E backup and L photos and bits, at the point of the install were you decide, delete our make partitions, I decided to delete L as it was not needed and clean install onto C, leaving E with my docs and data
The install went fine, when I looked at my drives in admin tools the C is marked boot and E system, I was going to delete E and make new partitions, but because it marked as system, can not delete it.How did I do this and is there away to put it all back onto C, without reformatting
Sometime early next year I will be building a new system. The system will likely have one large hard drive. As of now I will be installing XP Pro. I was curious how everyone else splits up their drive. How big of a partition is generally created for the OS. And do most people partition the remaining space. Now a file architecture question. When non OS applications games, utilities, MS Office, etc.) are installed do most people put then in D:Program Files Or create separate sub-folders for the broad categories and install them in the appropriate sub folder.
I was given a brand new Compaq Presario SR1910NX recently (I have 2 other heavy duty computer I use for video-editing, etc.). It is one of those "pre-loaded" machines with 2 partitions (one for OS; other for backup). The operating system is XP Home and plenty of bloatware. I don't plan on doing anything fancy with the machine - just some basic stuff like maybe a music server, check email, I would like to do a clean install with Windows XP SP2 (primarily to get rid of the partitions, bloatware, and upgrade OS).
So I think I was affected by the SP3 update. I went out and got another harddrive to reinstall on since the other harddrive wouldn't even boot up. I can format the disc and the setup files load and then the system does the reboot. But after it reboots it ask me if I want to install XP and it takes me through the prompts of which drive I want to partition.
how do you create a self install cd of windows BUT installing it without any windows screens showing up only the ones I made myself. then it reloads to boot the system.
I just loaded windows XP disk and was trying to follow directions from a website and I am so afraid to hit the wrong button! I am at the very beginning, screen says: The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartioned space on this computer, use arrows to select item in list: There is only one C: (HP Pavillion (FAT 32)I thought I should just delete that, and start over, but when I said delete it said it would maybe remove things I would need.....
I recently recieved my new seagate 160 gig HDD to replace my old one. According to the instruction manual, any versions of XP prior to sp1 and 2 will detect the drive as 137gig instead of 160. The install disk I have, however, is for XP without sp1. What would be the best approach? The software included with the drive gives you the option to transfer the boot info to the new drive (but i doubt that installs windows), and to format it to 137gig and later "expand the partition".
If someone downloads and runs a trojan and then uses system restore to back to a system restore point prior to running the virus, is that computer still infected?Nocturnal http://www.spywaretalk.org
I've tried unsuccessfully to restore my windows xp to a prior date, following the tutorial, with the response: "your system was unable to be restored to the prior date."
I work at a computer repair shop and am trying to find an easy way to do something that normally takes me a long time.I want to take in a customers somputer who has multiple user accounts, backup those accounts without backing up the entire registry (entire registry backup would in effect "backup" most problems i am fiing), then do a "destructive recovery (totally reinstalling their OS, and then somehow restore all of their old user accounts and the associated settings, my documents folders, etc.NTbackup will allow me to backup all accounts to an eternal HDD but it wont restore them if they are not on the newly installed OS.
I want to my WinXP laptop (a Thinkpad T41, WinXP SP2) to execute a task/script/job when it receives a suspend/hibernate request from me before it completes said suspend hibernate. It's basically a "do this before you suspend" procedure Specifically, I want to shut off my jabber connection to a server without having to do this manually.
if i do a clean install of windows xp to replace windows vista, will it create a windows.old folder that has all the stuff i had from before the clean install?
The machine does the usual, POST etc, does all its checks and then goes to boot from the HDD(HDD is indicated in BIOS etc). At this very stage (just before the WinXP splash Screen) the Screen (LCD) just goes black and does not ever recover. There is no error messages and the HDD LED blinks a couple more times then does nothing. LCD power light stays on green. I have to either turn it off via power button or do a restart with Ctrl,Alt + Del.
I have disconnected all peripherals except Video Card, HDD and still no luck. The only reason why i left the Video Card was that there is no onboard video and i had no other Video cards to replace it. I cant even boot into safe mode.I manage to resolve the problem by doing a WinXP repair over the top but what i really want to know is, was it a corrupt/damaged MBR that was causing this problem or was it a corrupt driver? I have read a few articles about nVidia cards giving black screens but none seem to be similiar to mine.

I installed Windows XP Home on a barebones computer, and mistakenly made the partition for the C drive much smaller (1.96 G with only 33MB free) than the D drive (1.6 G used, 24.9 G Free). Now I keep getting low disk messages. I want to resize the partitions so that the C Drive is larger without having to reformat both drives if that's possible. The file system on the C drive is NTFS and FAT32 on the D drive.CPU is 1.3 Ghz Athlon with 120 RAM.
I have a question for you all and I hope you can answer it.I have two partitions on my harddrive at the moment. The first partition is my C: partition, where Windows XP and all the applications are run from. These partitions were set up by the people that made my computer. I have about 4 % diskspace left on the C: partition and I want to create more storage space on the hard drive by removing the second partition. The second partition is a back up of my older hard drive.I have both backed up already on external harddrive and I use Acronis True Image 10 Home to make a weekly image of my hard drive.
Hey there, i'm currently running on Windows XP with a 120 gig Maxtor Harddrive. During my last reformat I'm guessing I did it wrong and mistakenly made a second partition while leaving the old one intact. I've checked through all my biggest storage heaps for what could be causing my HD to be so full. But my multimedia section is only 28 gigs, whereas the harddrive is showing 85 gigs worth of used space. Multiple partitions is the only thing I can think of. So is there a way I could find out if I have an extra partition, which one is the right one to delete, and the process of deleting it, possibly without having to transfer all my files. Any help would be appreciated.
I am going to re-format my 40 gig HDD for reasons you do NOT want to wade through I currently have four partitions on a 40 gig HDD, two bootable c: w98; d: XP Pro. The W98 partition is wrecked and I also have wanted to setup a linux partition so I can learn that system and play around in the "open source" universe, so now's the time. The question is, given my 40 gig capacity, what is the optimal setup for the new partitions
Under my computer, I have two drives, C and D (empty). I have never intentionally partitioned my hard drive into the two drives, and have thought nothing of it until recently when I realised I have only 1GB of space left of the 45GB on the C drive.I was just wondering if there is an easy way of recombining these two drives so that I can have just one big drive back. I have heard that commercial products such as partition magic do the job, but I can't see much point in paying 70 for some software that will only get used once.
So right now I want to format my computer and I am. Right now I am at the part where you can create/delete partitions. What I see right now is this.Unpartitioned Space 7MB D: Partition 2 [NTFS]182001 MB (181831 MB free) C: Partition 1(PRESARIO_RP) [FAT32] 8771MB (598 MB free), so I have two exact computers In my house and one of the disks I used to format wasn't working and was scratched so it got messed up at the end and I quit the installation. So now that up there happened Where do I install? Can I delete the other ones after picking the one I need to install in? And do I need to download something else after I delete those, like Partition 1.
XP home edition re-installed, it gave the hard drive three partitions, C, D, and E. C drive has 9.75GB the other two have over 60 GB. I need to put more back to C drive.
1st post here and I hope someone has answers. THis is new to me. Ihave a 200gb HD. I have it partitioned into 5 partitions. Onepartition for my C: OS, D: Software, E: Games, F: Storage, G:Graveyard. Well I do this so if anything happens to my OS, I canreinstall and all my other info is safe. After the reinstall of myOS, everything was perfect, I had some issues with my G drive andaccess denied but I managed to take ownership. Well I installed someupdates etc last night and did some restarts without any issues. Idecided to do a disk check on G upon next boot up. Well I just bootedup this morning and only my C drive exists now, All my software whichis installed on my D drive is now inaccessable as well as all theothers. I went to Computer Management and it shows the rest of mypartition as 175gb of FREE SPACE?
