Computer Will Not Boot When The New Formatted Drive Is Used
Apr 27, 2005
I have a laptop I purchased in 1999 that came with a three gb hard drive. I have recently purchased a 40 gb hard drive to replace the smaller drive and I amd trying to install the new drive with my licensed copy of windows xp pro. The computer will not boot when the new, formatted drive is put in its place and I am having a difficult time getting to the bios to tell it to boot from the cdrom drive.

I use Cobian Backup to produce a zip-file containing all files and folders, except for temporary-folders (I added an exclude-filter), of my system. Before I can rely on this method, I need to find a way of restoring the 27 gb zip-file, which I store on a networked drive, easily. how booting up a laptop with a formatted harddrive, be able to access a network-drive and extract all the contents of the networked zip-file to the hard drive?

I have a hard disk (non-booting) that was formatted by windows 98. I put a new drive in the system and put xp pro on it. The drives show up in device manager, and on my computer, but when I attempt to access the
drive, it says "unformatted drive, do you want to format". I hit no,because I don't want to lose the info on it.

I had to do a reinstall of XP on a brand new HD I just bought and I can't remember how to get XP to utilize my seperate HD I use for storage. It keeps asking me to format it. I have all my data on it so I definatley can't do that. I did something a year ago to get this to work, but I can't remember what I did. I installed XP service pack 2. Anyone know what to do? I remember I did something in disk managment. The drive I can't get to work is used for my backups. It is formatted and partitioned using XP and the same NTFS system as the new HD with XP on it. Even my bios detects the 320gb HD at 136gb max capacity. So its not showing that the drive is a 320gb HD. I am pretty sure my bios specified that it was 320 gigs before.
When I go into disk managment the drive I am having problems says it has 128gb as a primary partition(in blue), but then in the black highlighted box to the right says 170 gb unallocated. Shouldn't all the drive be in blue as being partitioned like it was before I did an install?

I have a 250GB Western Digital hard drive with a ~195GB partition formatted as FAT32. The partition is called "Documents" and has the letter C: assigned to it. The rest of the hard drive isn't formatted. The operating system (WinXP) is installed on a different hard drive.Since yesterday in My Computer or Explorer it's called "Local Disk C:" and whenever I click on it I get a box that says "The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". For two hours it came back and I backed up all the most important information but then the same problem came back again. I was able to see the contents of the partition through a few applications but not access it. My whole computer is working sluggish since this happened.

When I was reformatting my computer i deleted a part of my drive that i think was really important. It was drive E:. After the reformatting I tried to go on the internet. I tried to go on wireless but, I didn't have a wireless internet icon for my wireless card so I plugged it in. Still i could not go on the Internet. Then I tried to open some programs and half of them would load the others I would get error reports from. I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop?

I'm having a problem with installing service pack 2 and can't seem to fix it.I formatted my hard drive last night and installed Windows XP Professional. I then downloaded SP2 and started to install it, the install gets as far as "Updating the Registry Keys" and then it just sits there... It doesn't crash, doesn't start not responding or anything like that, it just sits there and does nothing. Last night i left it sitting for 3 hours and it still hadn't done anything, this morning it's been sitting for about 55 minutes and still nothing.Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

before I formatted my HP computer (Windows XP Prof Media Center Edition) I made a new folder called August 9th stuff saved. Then I put my documents, Email addresses, list of some forums and a few programs into this folder.Opened this folder and everything was in it! Burnt it onto DVD+ with Nero, made sure that the option said DVD. Then, Make Data DVD. Found the folder, then added the folder and burnt it. ( I have done this a hundred times and never had any problem!)However, now putting the DVD into computer, it opens with this "August 9th stuff.o02" but this is all you get, you cannot open this file, However when you click on properties it shows size 572 mb which is correct!I have had a technician working on this for 3 hours, he cannot open it,

I am running Windows XP SP2 Home edition, 3.0 GHz, 2GB RAM and everything was operating perfectly. I recenlty installed (upgraded) to Norton Antivirus 2007 and I'm now receiving a "Windows - No Disk...There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive" error. This only happens when I boot the computer up. I suspect that I accidentally had a flash drive in a USB port during the Norton upgrade, which may have messed things up. I have tried using a registry cleaner and Scan Disk to remedy the problem but to no avail. I also used Device Manager to disable the drive, and I do not get the error. However, when I enable the drive, the error returns. A Google search led me to your site and I have noticed several people with a similar error.

I was attempting to back up my hard drive to an external hard drive. The program (Norton Ghost 14) wasn't recognizing the drive. The Norton tech. helped me determine this was because under Disk Management there were no drive letters next to the drives. It showed a small partition on my primary drive, my primary drive, and my usb connected external hard drive, but none had drive letters next to them. I attempted to change their drive letters. It did something, but the letters still didn't show next to the drives. After this, everything disappeared on my desktop. I then rebooted and couldn't get to the login screen.Right now, when I start my computer I get the Dell bios revision screen, then the black MS Windows XP screen, and then the blue XP screen. Everything looks normal except that it stops short of the login area. My guess is that by changing the primary drive letter that my computer now cannot find anything because it appears the C drive is missing.

I turned it back on and it gets to the HP Blue Screen. About 3 seconds after startup.Does nothing else.
When I turn the comptuer on i see the 3 lights on the Keyboard but then goes away. And any option at this screen like the F2 F10 or the ESC do not work.Sounds like the Harddrive is running fine. But just sits on that screen.Reboot and same thing.I did reseat the SATA and power cables on the Drive just to make sure.

I recently installed a new hard drive into a friends computer and installed XP Home.
I ran all the updates and service packs.
I left later that day and let him install all his applications.
I got a call tonight from him saying he really screwed up and doesn't know what to do.
I had to follow his thinking over the phone so I hope I get this all correct.
He had trouble loading the drivers for his HP printer. He would get an error saying that a C: empHP_WebRelease folder was missing. He did manage to figure out that for some reason when I installed XP it called the Boot drive "I" instead of "C"

I have an old HD From a system that I got rid of. I want to put it into a friends system to see if I can retrieve the files off of it and put it onto my external HD. The hard drive was the boot disk and the computer I am installing it on has it's own boot disk. If I boot up with two boot disks will there be a problem? Is there anything I need to take into account before doing this? I am planning on installing the old HD onto an ATA cable that I unplugged from the DVD drive. The HD that is in this system is not on an ATA cable, I'm not sure what it is connected to, just a small plug with a blue cable going to the mother board.

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

I have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly. Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there. When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.
I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning. There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
The information in my sig is not for the computer with the problem. It's actually for an old computer which my son now has at college.
